^^ sure didn't. Also didn't bother to take the time to go over each chart that was posted. It's a pain in the ass to look at them on my iPhone while I'm also doing something else

BUT. I do find ways to stay in shape and exercise without putting my life in danger and being an asshole to other people.

Well I think the argument would be that we need better bike and pedestrian infrastructure. The reason why people in other countries use those modes more is because they don't feel like they are putting their life in danger or being assholes when they ride.

I don't ride a bike (though I do walk most places) for that reason; I feel fairly confident I would be hurt or killed.

I'm a bit mixed on the critical mass thing as well. It can be a positive thing, but often times is overwhelmed by people who just want to be assholes.

That's not really what this "organization" does. They frequently break traffic laws and purposefully block traffic. While some of the people may just be looking for a fun social experience, as a whole they intentionally provoke anger in not only motorists, but law-abiding bicyclists. What they do is mind-blowingly counterproductive.

I think it's probably largely the other way around in many places. They have pedestrian/bike-friendly infrastructure because it makes more sense to ride bikes there. For one thing, their cities are much more dense and compact, as opposed to sprawling suburbia like we have in the U.S., due to our giant expanses of land to work with. Due to this and the fact that (at least in Europe, where I feel like you are mostly talking about) many of the street layouts are old, it isn't really conducive to lots of fast traffic in many places. Furthermore, almost everyone in America can afford a car. That isn't the case everywhere.

I'd also like to add that I've been to plenty of places that are no better (and in some cases, worse) for riding bikes than America is.

Oh, and:

Quote :
"A lot believe that if more people rode bikes a lot of positive changes would occur in our society"

They can believe whatever they want, but it's not OK to try to impose it by acting like a bunch of cocksuckers.

Quote :
"-most drivers have absolutely ZERO awareness of cyclist or where they are allowed to ride. Lets face it most drivers are oblivious. Most cyclists that log lots of miles every week, whether as destination bikers or for training (and so do their friends) know someone that has been killed. That shit is senseless."

True. I ride a motorcycle the great majority of the time, year-round. Like, I drive my truck maybe once per week, and my car maybe 2-3 times (usually not to work...sometimes to the gym at night, or to pick up stuff at the store if it's too much to put in the motorcycle). I don't think I've driven anything other than a motorcycle to work in a couple of weeks.

...so yeah, I'm as aware as anyone of how much cagers suck, and I have at least a couple of friends who've been hurt badly by getting hit by cars. I've come close myself, many many times.

...but antagonizing people and acting like a dipshit will not help anything. quit trying to frame the Critical Mass types as anything other than a counterproductive cancer.

That's sort of true, but not as much as you would think. Most all of the examples used in those statistics were no better off than the US 30 and 40 years ago, but they made conscious policy decisions to better support cycling and pedestrians. You don't even have to look further than the United States. There's nothing really different about Portland and Minneapolis than many of the other cities in the country except that they made a decision to invest in infrastructure, and as a result people use it. Portland could be an example for many cities. Also, as the chart on short trips shows, even for short distance trips where we could easily walk or bike we choose to drive our cars. As for the affordability things, when it comes to European countries, most are just as wealthy as us I think, but they make it harder to afford driving with really high gas taxes, congestion pricing, etc. Whether that is right or wrong is up for debate obviously, but rising gas prices here (beyond our control) could have a similar effect.

Do cyclists pay road taxes in any way? If they want better bike lanes, pay for them through registrations and shit like that. A paid registration for biking should be required on any road where the speed limit is greater than 15 mph

Bikes are really big around here...almost everyone who lives here has a bike or two....

granted they are mostly beach cruisers cause most people just use their bikes to get to bars or just for a bike ride.

^I'm guessing the answer to that is yes. If they pay their state taxes they are paying for the roads.

^^^We can't make it that painful to drive here, not on a national level at least. America is not Europe. What if you live...well, pretty much anywhere west of the Mississippi River that isn't one of the half-dozen or so big cities in the West? There ARE no short trips. It could easily be a 50-mile drive to the grocery store in plenty of places.

[Edited on February 28, 2011 at 11:15 PM. Reason : ^ a lot of road funding comes from vehicle registration and gas tax]

^^ There are auto taxes on top of state taxes to pay for roads. Cyclists should pay the same thing if they want special facilities.

^^(haha, he thinks he just said something insightful and not-retarded)

^ Ummm...ok. So they pay for the roads they use in their cars just like any other motorist. What he's saying is that if bike boys want bike lanes, they need to ante up and help out.

I am not opposed to paying a bit for better facilities, but keep in mind the wear and tear on a road surface by bikes is going to be a hell of a lot less than that of a motor vehicle of any kind.

So they should pay car tax and bike tax. Simple enough. Pay for the services you get.

^ that's fine. Just means the bike lane won't require as much paving, hence less tax dollars. Just as long as cyclists are paying their fair share.

Drivers aren't paying their fair share either. The gas tax brings a huge shortfall every year because it hasn't been raised in 17 years.

I agree with the bike riders not following road rules. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but one time I was coming up to a stop at the 4 ways stop sign on Sullivan Dr and there was a biker coming in the opposite direction. I had come to a complete stop and started taking my left turn when this fucker just goes right through the stop sign without even thinking to stop. I had my window down and called him a fucking idiot and he just gave me the biggest shit eating grin I've ever seen. To this day I regret not plowing his ass out of the way for being so fucking stupid. If I could go back in time this would be like the 3rd or 4th thing I would correct in my life.
