usually in a class action you are already involved unless you specifically take action to remove yourself from said class.

lovely, "OH WE'LL BE BACK ONLINE SHORTLY" followed by "OH WE'LL BE BACK ONLINE IN A WEEK"

what's next, back online this quarter? this fiscal year? seriously?

It will have been a week tomorrow.

but this isn't the first time the network has been down, just the longest. Every time there is an update I have trouble signing on or playing COD.

Good luck with that. You'd have to go out of your way to avoid their entertainment empire.

IF its true that anonymous is behind the hack then its actually the network that had nothing to do with the problem in the first place, it WAS the ps3 (and sony's iron fist rule over it)

also at what point does it just take any large company who gets hacked and can't figure it out to put anonymous as the scapegoat. i'm not saying that's what happened here but it at least crosses every company's mind now that they are capable of taking on giant corporations.

The argument blaming Sony for a Anon response/attack is fundamentally flawed.

It's akin to blaming you for a gang that robs your house after you turn one in for mugging you earlier.

Not agreeing with how Sony handled the situation, but hey, that's just tough shit for that dude. I don't have to like it.

"PSN Restoration in the 'Final Stages'
Stringer: "In the coming days, we will restore service."

PlayStation Network will be returning soon. Sony said today internal testing of its new system is in the final stages. The company did not provide an window for when PSN will be operational, however. Sony said last month that certain PSN services would go live during the first week of May.

"Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services," corporate communications director Patrick Seybold said on the PlayStation Blog.

Quote :
"Dear Friends,

I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.

Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.

To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.

As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.

As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.

As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.

In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.

In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.

With best regards,
Howard Stringer "

jesus i didn't realize some of you people relied on something this much to make you personally boycott the brand. Sure i want PSN back as bad as the next guy but once i new it was down and would be awhile I found better things to do with my time. Had this happend to xbox and microsoft (lets not go into the technicalities here) you wouldn't be so quick to pass judgement.

^^So you'll never buy a Sony product ever again, except God of War?

Sounds like you're already cracking.

^Eh, there are plenty of people ready to hate MS at a moment's notice.

I actually had an Xbox 360 first and haven't really played PS3 for anything other than Sony exclusive titles like GOW3.

To me, the Xbox system is vastly superior but you do have to pay for it.

I don't hate Sony but there seems to be too much hacker hate against the company (for whatever reasons) and I'm not willing to risk my credit card and identity because they didn't take it seriously in the first place. If this happened to Microsoft, people would be going 100 million times more apeshit than they have at Sony because you pay for Microsoft's service. I don't really play a ton of online multiplayer games so I could do without both services if they both were giant security risks.

probably a pretty dumb question, and i read through the thread and saw someone made a comment on it on the first page, but i had an old debit card number stored on PSN like 6 months ago, but i lost the card and replaced it back in november. the only thing i use PSN for is netflix, and i'm pretty sure that credit card # wouldn't be compromised. i don't have anything to worry about here, right?

chances are no. Sony made a statement earlier this week that there were a few thousand credit card numbers that were exposed by the hack, but they came from an outdated list and were from users in europe and asia, none from the US.

at the earliest I'd say this shit will be back up on Thurs/Fri. But I'm thinking this goes through one more weekend as they won't wanna bring it up late in the week and have everyone and their dog jump on for Fri/Sat/Sun.

So I'd say about a week from today is when you'll see it come back online.

"The PlayStation network has been down since April 20, and despite claims from Sony that the service would be partially operational by now, it's still down. And could be for some time, if a report in Bloomberg is correct.

"Sony is uncertain when it can resume the services," Tokyo-based Sony spokesperson Shigenori Yoshida is quoted as saying in the report, before letting slip a new return date, "The company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 is unchanged."

Sony's most recent update on the Playstation blog said that the PSN was currently in the "final stages of internal testing." But if the new date of May 31 is to be believed, PSN-users will have been wandering the online gaming wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights upon its return.
