"This thread is about fucking spelling, and you people are blaming everyone but the kids for failing at that? What the hell."

The last thing kids want to do is learn. Children don't have the ability to know what's good for them.
Children, by law, are not allowed to have sex until they're 16, can't vote until they're 18 and can't drink until they're 21. The age discrimination exists. If you lift the age ban, I will put the blame on the kids. But until then, it is the schools and parents fault for not educating their children.

I can't blame parents because it takes 2 parents working full time to support a household these days. So the only person left to blame is TEACHers because TEACHers are paid to TEACH. Notice how TEACH is capitalized. When it comes to education, they are responsible.

Of course, they are failing because they're tied by their nuts to only teach what No Child Left Behind says is important.

well we need to fix this part then, b/c if the kids don't get taught that learning is important at home then they will just ignore teachers at school

Well, exactly.

It s a chain reaction.

If the teachers are failing? Why?
because the government. Why?
because of no child left behind act. Why doesn't congress fix it?
because they are corrupt and inept and broken.

Why do parents have to work 2 full time jobs with no benefits... when back in the day only the dad could support an entire family, save for retirement, have full benefits?

because rent is too damn high. Why?
because banks have no regulation. Why?
because they can buy congress members.
Why don't we the people fix it?
because voting is rigged, the people in power are corrupt and do anything to control the outcome.
This is a republic, not a democracy. Voting is just to appease the stupid people. Unless we have open elections to prove your vote counts, we'll never know for sure if the voting is rigged or not.
We have to trust in officials that we have no trust in. Recipe for disaster.

What would happen to society if rent was cut by 50%? Most renters would have $500- $1500 more a month in their pockets. That's equivalent to what someone would make working at minimum wage full time for a month.

That's enough to afford one parent to stay home and spend more quality time with their children.

There are many many branches of the tree, above is just an example of one way order can get restored.

Reality is if a kid is going to succeed then 99% of the time the parents (or someone) has to be heavily involved from the start. If you're relying solely on the government to educate your kids then you done fucked up.

Just a reminder, we are talking about spelling and grammar.

If you're relying solely on the school system to teach your child spelling and grammar, you should be able to rely 100% on the school system to teach your child spelling and grammar.

If the system is broken, you are going to have a broken country. You can't get a finished product from a broken machine or else it would be called a machine sans the adjective broken.

Holy fuck. I have a degree in ENGLISH EDUCATION.
I worked for NCSU tutoring writing and public speaking.
I specialized in non-native English speakers.

Spelling and grammar are not fucking important. (This becomes clearer and clearer if you look at it from a historical perspective.) The "rules" are shit. Trust me. That's why it's so hard to learn English as a non-native. Phonics is bullshit. Grammar is fluid. The things that you think are "foundational" aren't as foundational or as important as you think that they are. All correct spelling and grammar functions as is a social signal. Other than that, they serve no practical purpose. Ideas can be effectively communicated without proper grammar and correct spelling. How in the hell do you think that non-native English speakers end up with advanced degrees?

The curriculum reflects these ideals. Do we waste our time teaching grammar and spelling or do we teach students how to construct a clear argument and proof read carefully? And frankly, even if you teach a kid how to diagram every damned sentence that comes out of his mouth, he's still going to revert back to the spoken language that he hears on a daily basis.

if they stop changing the grammar rules, it would be fine. But they have to piss everyone off so we have to buy a new updated MLA/APA format guide book. I remember when two spaces before each sentence was a rule and then I got pounced on like a buffalo at the waterhole by my lit teacher because its suppose to be only one... as guided by the latest MLA book. Fuckin shit. Gonna grill me over the use of spaces?

bottombaby, you are merely an English teacher. I wouldn't expect you to understand how poor grammar and spelling leads to problems of miscommunication.

Why do you think I struggle to get my point across all the time? Because people interpret what I'm saying incorrectly.

Hypothetically, if everyone were on the same wavelength, there would be no miscommunication. Your ignorance how important spelling and grammar are is fucking up society's ability to communicate.

You have to appreciate how hard it is to come up with one rule to cover all works cited. It is damn near impossible when information is missing more often than not. Dates are missing, Articles are missing, articles with 1,2,3,4... authors, internet articles, magazine articles, books, pamphlets.
New technologies come out every single day, so it is common sense that the standard constantly change and evolve.

The goal is to make it easier for a researcher to verify your work. YOU have to do the hardwork of making simple for people to find your sources. It should not be the reader's virtually impossible feat to find where you come up with information... whether you pulled it out of your ass or if someone else said it.

You get your point across correctly all the time. Nobody is misinterpreting what you are saying. It's just that we've all reached the same conclusion that you are a fucking idiot and that we will all laugh when your business fails miserably.

I give up.

If you would like to learn more about the topic that you are trying to discuss, take some time to read about the history of prescriptive linguistics and its modern day criticism.

I would drop my AP students' papers an entire letter grade if spell check raped their ass because its just carelessness to auto-correct without careful proof reading.

-What?

An 8ball.

Grammar is indeed fluid; the rules are used to aid understanding rather than to assert superiority, and those who set to encase a subset of current practice in amber and enforce it on the populace (prescriptivists) are doomed to mockery.

also I lol@ people who think you're not supposed to split infinitives or end sentences with prepositions

[Edited on June 13, 2011 at 7:44 PM. Reason : Spelling is fluid too, although not so much as before Noah Webster made his Dictionary.

Is there a "better" way to say what you want to say by not splitting infinitives or ending sentences with prepositions?

In other words, is it possible to say the exact same thing without violating the rule?

"Viola!"

that's a stringed instrument that is tuned to the same notes as a cello but one octave higher and is played under the chin. i believe the word you were looking for is "voila" or "voilĂ " if you want to be fancy about it.

also, it's called writing style. sometimes the rules make sense and make for better writing. other times they hamper what the writer is trying to say.
