General reviews are that it is way too "linear" and "arcade". Basically that you move from one section to another and then fire indiscriminately to kill hoards of enemies that charge you, rinse and repeat. No real atmosphere, strategy, or tension, just spray and pray along scripted sections of each level. Squad based strategy is non existent, and the AI squad mates are useless. The graphics are also low res and outdated.

I am disappointed but not at all surprised, will def pass on this garbage.

Just sat down and started playing this tonight. As a ridiculously die-hard Aliens fan, I had hoped that this game wasn't as bad as most of the reviews which I have read would indicate. Pretty sure that my hopes are crushed. I've never played a game where the weapons are so ludicrously underpowered. I had really wanted to play this through just to see what kind of story the writers came up with, but now I'm not sure that I can go through with it.

yes but everyone expects a cod game to be a boring turd like that. cod is scored on a scale with other badgames like gears of war and halo where its not if the game is good, but of how high quality the mountain dew and doritos tie ins are. it goes from 90 (not enough dew, brah) to 100 (special edition doritos).

aliens: colonial marines is on the separate, traditional game review scale where 0-50 is horrible crap, 50-75 is bad, 75-85 is maybe ok, and above that its probably good. people expected acm to be a good game cause the subject matter lends itself to interesting gameplay, but gearbox/sega/whoever thought they were making a cod mans-shooter and not a good game.

WTF is that gif above supposed to be, the short bus special needs alien?

any game that is overly linear, scripted, or where you are stuck on a track (like missions where you have to man the machine gun in a jeep while it automatically drives), are garbage to me. And dont get me started on quick time events.

A game should have as much "sandbox" as possible that the given material allows. Obviously a game like ACM would not be a traditional GTA sandbox game (although if they could make it work that would be fucking awesome), but at least try to have some freedom in how a level is played, with some randomness and few event triggers.

acm could have been fine in a relatively linear path if the environments and gameplay made up for it. ex: terror instead of a poorly made shootmansaliens.

like if you've ever played the original avp games those were more along the lines of what it should be. more horror survival, less shoot 'em up.

the AVP games were pretty damn good, although they were linear, they were much more survival horror, as opposed to non stop shoot them up

AVP2 was godly in its time.

Especially the multiplayer.

Can't they just update that game for modern consoles? I mean, damn!

I'm tempted to install AVP2 now.

But I know multiplayer will be a bust

maybe this is nit picky, but why the hell did they make the PULSE rifle with a charging handle and a cycling bolt animation. The entire point of a pulse rifle is that the rounds are ignited by an electric pulse, not a bolt and firing pin.

That's not nit picky.

That's just noticing how everything is ruined.

I wouldn't have been surprised if they made it bolt-action, so you could quick scope those xen00bmorphs and make sick montages for YouTube

I went to the store to buy this the day that it came out.

I ended up getting Sniper Elite v2. It's surprisingly good.

Fixed some of the glitches + AI / pathfinding.

And some other stuff - it was 4gb, after all.

I mean, the graphics, story, and gameplay are essentially unchanged..

A drop in the bucket, I'd say. And also too little too late. And probably some other idioms, too.

The game isn't great, but I still have a lot of fun playing around with friends. It's one of those games.

Got this for $5 from Gamefly. Oh what the hell, gonna try it anyway.

A friend and I are gonna get wrecked playing this on coop so maybe it'll be a fun game to play drunk. One can hope.
