if you can keep Hillis, Charles and Jackson I would do it. If you can only keep two, I would do Hillis and Charles.

Not saying Vick wont be good. He certainly will.

But.

Everyone should take a strong look at his performance tonight. Absolutely terrible. Pitt is obviously a legit D, but his reads were rookie-like tonight. I think there will be more like this for Vick this season. Blitz the hell out of him and play tight man.

And that Phi D is getting stomped.

How early is too early to pick a defense? I joined a keeper league (everyone kept 2, and new guys have a supplemental draft to get their 2), and defensive scoring is a little wonky:

Sack 2
Interception 3
Fumble Recovery 3
Touchdown 6
Safety 2
Block Kick 3
Points Allowed 0 points 35
Points Allowed 1-6 points 25
Points Allowed 7-13 points 15
Points Allowed 14-20 points 5
Points Allowed 21-27 points 0
Points Allowed 28-34 points -5
Points Allowed 35+ points -20

Tackles for Loss .5

all the normal stuff is worth about a point extra per stat, but the points allowed is pretty big... I'm used to a defense scoring b/w 5-15 pts, but this scoring could be huge with the right defense. I'm just wondering how early is too early, and what is the shelf on defenses, ie: which ones should I go after and after they are gone (if I can't get them) how long should I wait and who should I go after.

If the points are that big, I would take it 5-6th rd. Because as soon as the 1st one is taken they usually go quick.

^^^Wow that's stupid. I say 8th round as earliest, wait after top 5. It's nearly impossible to predict defense performance over 16 games but with those points you have to try for a good team.

^No, I'm not going to spend $50 for a guy to tell me things I already know for a chance to win $80 off my friends.

^It is hard to predict defenses, but Pitt is always good & they have a better than normal schedule (NFC West). Wouldn't be shocked to see a pair of shutouts out of those 6 games

Biofreak do you have to play a defense? I'd go week-to-week based on matchups. Fuck wasting a high pick on a defense just to have them lose you 20 points on a bad week

The point of that defensive scoring system is to make a defense equivalent to 2-3 offensive players. Most leagues are set up where defenses are an after thought and completely useless. This way, you really have to payattention to weekly matchups. I've been involved in leagues with this coring system for twelve years and really like it.

Need to choose 1 more keeper out of this trio: Forte, Blount, & Steven Jackson

Brees & Rice are the other 2 I kept. No PPR

PPR = Forte
Non-PPR = Blount

Jackson still produces but he on the downside of his career. Workhorse macks fade fast once they start to get worn down and he has had 300+ carry seasons his entire career. You just can't keep that up forever. Eventually your body starts to break down.

Id go with Jackson as my 3rd keeper. He's supposedly fuly healthy and has a good QB for the first time in his career. I think its close between him and Forte, but in the end I'd go with sjax

no matter how many points you get for the D it's not worth a high (before ~10th round) pick...they're so unpredictable and matchups are so important.

Had my draft yesterday. Not particularly enamored with my team this year but I thought I'd get some input from you guys.

12 man draft, PPR league. Its a high scoring league with 6 pts per touchdown at every offensive position and bonuses for yardage milestones. I had the 9th pick, gambled with Vick. Rodgers and Johnson were still on the board. I'll try to give my best recollection of what round I picked everyone up in.

QB: Vick (1)
QB: McNabb (15)

RB: Gore (2)
RB: F. Jackson (5)
RB: Wells (8)
RB: M. Bush (11)

WR: Wallace (3)
WR: Rice (6)
WR: Manningham (7)
WR: Moore (10)
WR: Britt (9)

TE: Gates (4)
TE: Lewis (13)

K: Bironas (14)
K: Longwell (17)

D: Chargers (12)
D: 49ers (16)

Feel free to pick my team apart. As a Bills fan, I feel like I may have jumped at Fred Jackson too quickly but I needed a second running back and they were disappearing quickly. I also think my receivers are solid as a whole but lack the big name consistent performer that I've had in the past. Mike Wallace isn't the best player for a PPR league either.

Drop that second kicker and pick up Anthony Dixon as a handcuff to Gore since Gore will inevitably get hurt at some point during the season.

Its a fixed roster so I can't do that. I drafted Gore and Foster last year so my RBs were stout and I was leading going into the playoffs. Then Gore got hurt along with Dallas Clark and I took a beating in the playoffs. So I was hesitant taking Gore again this year but he was by far the best available at the 16th pick.

[Edited on August 21, 2011 at 1:48 PM. Reason : ^Haha, I struggle with defenses. I know the good defensive teams but that doesnt always mean FF pts]

^^^^^^sure it is, players can be unpredictable and matchups are important

if defenses were weighed that heavily in my league I would make it a point to land Pitt, GB, NYJ, Philly or Baltimore's defense fairly early on in the draft (maybe 4th or 5th round depending on when other managers start plucking them off the board). If you can get a defense that has the capability of shutting out an opponent you could earn 35 points just from the points allowed alone. Thats more points than you'll likely get from any other single player on your roster.

I dont like that scoring format, but you gotta draft within your leagues rules, and theres no way I would settle for a mediocre defense in a league like that.

If Colston doesn't recover fully from that knee surgery, I could be in real good shape with Lance Moore. Britt could be a good pick that late in the draft for later on in the season after his suspension. Lots of "ifs" though. That's what I don't like about this team. I've been in this league for about 10 years and this was probably the hardest time I've had drafting.

Do you realize how rare shutouts are? you make it sound like the 35 would be a given, its not. And defense should be worth 2-3 offensive players. Its one fantasy position that is representing HALF (or a third if you count special teams) of the real football positions. If a defense is just worth one offensive player or even less than one then you are basically not paying attention to half of football. The only reason it seems odd is that its different from normal, but it makes total sense.

The system is based on being as close to real football as possible. So yes, 35 points is a lot for a shutout, but, in real football, if your defense pitches a shutout you should win 95% of the time so it should be worth a lot.

We only have one position. It's called "team". Its one fantasy position that is representing ALL of the real football positions. If your team scores more points you win. The only reason it seems odd is that its different from normal, but it makes total sense.

12 teams. 2 keepers, had 7th pick. low scoring league (non ppr, 1pt per 50 yds passing, 1pt per 25 yards rush/rec).

QB - Vick
RB - Charles
RB - S. Jax
WR - Boldin
WR - B. Edwards
WR - S. Smith (CAR)
TE - Gates
K - Gostkowski
DEF - Steelers
BN - Roethlisberger (QB)
BN - S. Rice (WR)
BN - Cotchery (WR)
BN - LaFell (WR)
BN - T. Jones (RB)
BN - B. Scott (RB)

I like it. WR's were very thin by time I had my 2nd pick (took S. Jax first). Tons of upside in my opinion but also tons of suck potential. T. Jones was the handcuff pick and B. Scott was a late pick with hopes Benson goes to jail or something. Cotchery and LaFell were my last two picks. Steve Smith was my Panthers homer pick. Got Roethlisberger pretty late and he seems like a solid backup for when/if Vick goes down. Sidney Rice well, was a drunk pick.. but maybe, just maybe, SEA will have a QB to get him the ball.

QB - Matt Ryan
RB - AP
RB - Green-Ellis
WR - Brandon Marshall
WR - Ochocinco
WR - Braylon Edwards
TE - Antonio Gates
K - Vinatieri
D - Eagles

Bench - LT, Julio Jones, Nate Burleson, Ricky Williams, Jacoby Jones

I'm alright with it but not as happy as I was last year. I had first pick (AP)

Weird that you guys are still doing drafts instead of auctions. It feels like 2002 in this thread what are you guys drafting on Netscape Navigator?

In one league that is really QB heavy. They give pts for completions, negative pts for incompletions, 6pts for a TD pass, and 3 pts for 300+ yards.
2 years ago I had Brees and an otherwise awful team and made the playoffs. Last year I luckily grabbed Vick but I still missed the playoffs b/c i played QB roulette when he was hurt with shit guys. Not making that mistake again so I had to get either Rodgers, Brees, or Brady. (or at least Rivers/Romo)

How'd I do?
Starters:
QB: D.Brees ($33)
RB: M. Jones-Drew ($35), F.Jones ($13), R.Grant ($16)
WR: M.Austin ($24), D. Bryant ($22), D.Bowe ($21)
TE: A.Gates ($23)
K: M.Crosby ($1)
D: C.Bearskis ($2)

Backups:
QB: K.Kolb ($1)
RB: R.Jennings ($2), D. Woodhead ($2), J.Starks ($1), D.Murray ($1)
WR: J. Nelson ($2)

read the first sentence in that quote again, I said if you get a defense with the capability of shutting out an opponent you could earn 35 points from points allowed alone. None of that implies that shutouts would be a given, but if you have a defense thats capable of shutting out an opponent its a huge advantage. Which is why I would want to have a defense with that capability (Pittsburgh, NYJ, GB, etc.).

I see your point about making defenses worth more points since it represents more collective players, but since it takes up one position on your fantasy roster is shouldnt be able to give you more points than 2-3 other positions combined. That takes away from the strategy in fantasy football, which is to assemble a group of players in a manner that they collectively earn more points than your opponent.
With a defense being worth so much you could win your weekly matchups with below average players and a really good defense carrying the load. Say the Packers shut out the vikings, forcing 3 INTS (one returned for a TD) and sack McNabb 3 times, thats 56 points for one position on your roster. The rest of your team could shit the bed and you could still win your matchup.

^5, I would take Lloyd w/o a second thought. He should end up in the top 10 this yea imo.

One of my leagues last night, 12 man, standard rules w/ 4pts for QB TD, we didnt take RB till 5th round

QB Bradford
RB Felix Jones, Beanie Wells
RB Reggie Bush, LT
WR Roddy White, Steve Smith(car)
WR Calvin Johnson, Jacoby Ford
WR Desean Jackson, Eddie Royal
TE Antonio Gates, Jermaine Gresham
K Mason Crosby
D

well, you're set at WR and TE. Not really a fan of your RBs or Bradford being your only QB. Felix, Beanie and Reggie could all have good years, but there is a lot of risk there

also, here is a bullshit league I did on ESPN for fun, I think I did well. 10 team league

QB - Tom Brady
RB - Jamaal Charles
RB - Jahvid Best
WR - Hakeem Nicks
WR - Dez Bryant
WR/RB - Shonn Greene
TE - Kellen Winslow
DST - Steelers
K - Crosby
BN - Steve Smith (Car), Tim Hightower, Kevin Kolb, Julio Jones, Malcom Floyd, Ryan Torain, Rashad Jennings

Julio Jones- is he a good guy to have? I would figure so only for a keeper league, as I don't expect a lot from him immediately, but others seem to have him pretty high on their lists... I guess he is now number 2 guy down in Atlanta... but all this means to me is Tony G. is looking better this year at TE

what's yalls opinion on him and what he will do this season?

Rookie WR's rarely put up big numbers, and he has to compete with White and Gonzalez for targets, not to mention Turner on the ground and Quizz in the flats.

I think 700 and 6 is reasonable.

Ugh, got my 16-teamer PPR draft coming up, and I pick #16. I've done some 14 team mock drafts and I think the following players may be potentially be available around that time:

Gore, S-Jax, Turner, Nicks, Fitz, McFadden, Forte, Jennings, V-Jax

Kind of want to go RB/WR and get either McFadden or Forte since I'm not very high on the other 3 RBs, then whatever the best WR is available (really liking V-Jax at the moment). Was trying to target a QB by the next 2 picks (48, 49), but I'm not very high on taking someone like Manning there---probably going for Felix, DeAngelo, and/or Colston around then. I'd rather just wait until 80, 81 to take the QB (at the very least Big Ben). Any opinions?

Just did a 16 team draft. Had the 4th pick and Forte went just in front of me in the 2nd round. He gets a lot of receptions though (I think over 50 last year) so I'd think about him. Our league is pretty QB heavy so it might be different, but I know Ben Roethlisberger wasn't there at the 80th pick or anywhere close to it.
