^i wish norv would just turn the keys over to rivers and forget about tolbert and matthews. seems like every game the chargers are trying to "establish the run" until about 3 minutes left in the first quarter when the realize they can't and let him throw.

same thing happens in the third quarter as well. i think it has held the chargers and phil's statistics back.

^^It will help them when they get into the playoffs. River's can't carry the team for the rest of his career. Without the run, they might not be 3-1 right now either. Before yesterday, Rivers had thrown 2 picks a game and hasn't been that sharp. Not smart to be a one-dimensional football team.

maybe a few years ago. but the nfl has gone away from the establish the run, pass off that.

green bay, new england, pittsburgh in 2008, pre injury manning, etc are all running devoid squads. rivers may not quite be up there with rodgers and brady, but he's good enough to carry the squad.

With the exception of New England (even they had respectable running games when they won Super Bowls)...those teams COULD run. They might have let their QBs air it out, but the opposing defense respected the run. Even the 2006 Colts had a really good rushing game. Addai broke 1,000 yds as a rookie and averaged nearly 5 yds a carry.

So the Chargers do NEED to establish a running game. Plz to go back to weightlifting threads with your "expertise."

hey now, I'm a big Rivers fan...he's the only reason I like the Chargers. But you've got to call a spade a spade. He's been disappointing so far this year (even with a good game yesterday).

He needs to, and I believe he will, pick it up this year for the Chargers to have a shot at the Super Bowl. It would help to get Gates back...although Gates was missing a lot last year when Rivers had a great season with 2nd tier WRs.

Ugh, what I have started. He certainly was not at his best the first 3 weeks, and I'm probably the biggest PR fanboy on this site.

I've moved on without Gates. He may never be a factor for the Chargers ever again. The emergence of Ryan Matthews will more than compensate for Gates gimpyness. Phil hasn't had a running game since LT was LT.

*Mario Williams looked ridiculously imposing as stand up 3-4 linebacker yesterday.
