After about a month of owning my Kindle, the screen cracked and I had to turn it in for a replacement (no charge).
Then, last month, I switched from an AT&T iPhone 4 to a Verizon 4S. Ever since then, my Kindle has been unable to sync with the most recent page on the 4S. It's driving me up a wall because I often switch devices during the day.
Solutions?

I used to try and sync the 2 but it was too much a pain to keep the wireless on. I only read on the Kindle now.
Yeah my dad's retired and goes through a new Kindle every 6 months. He's on his 5th or so now. They just keep sending new ones. Good thing support is so great. 12/14/2011 3:35:30 PM |

Just need a little confirmation here, I think I already know the answer.
If I have digit copies of movies that I have ripped to my hard drive, or family movies that I have taken, I can upload these to the cloud, but I can't stream them. I would, however, have the option to download them from the cloud to my device. Is this the same with music as well as videos? 12/20/2011 2:22:10 PM |

So you can't give other people books on the Fire like you can on the regular Kindles. Just tried it. Oh well. Guess it's for the best otherwise people would figure it out and start sharing movies/games/etc. 1/4/2012 3:45:36 PM |

so I bought my parents the Kindle Fire for Christmas and they love it. I have the 3rd gen Kindle with keyboard that I love (just for reading and games). My screen didn't crack but had some image issue and I got a new one quickly with no trouble and no problem since then. The Fire is great for my parents, who just want something to play games on and check ESPN (Dad) and to read purchased books or from public library (Mom) and to check emails, use the internet briefly (both). The iPad seemed to have way more than they would ever use or know how to use. 1/4/2012 4:03:23 PM |

Neither on the normal kindles you can log out of one account, log into another, download all the books, then log back into another account and the books will stay on the device. On the Fire when you de-register the device all the content on the device is deleted. 1/4/2012 6:25:14 PM |

So is Kindle Touch worth the extra 20 bucks? Getting it for my wife that will do mostly reading and possibly some annotation. I remember seeing both orignal and Touch at the store and it seemed that the original Kindle had a brighter/whiter screen. Also, will she be able to load various "gray market" books in other languages? 4/23/2012 5:11:17 PM |

^After seeing all three Kindles side by side (Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, and new Kindle) I'd say the Kindle Keyboard still has the best screen. I went through 3 new Kindle's before finally returning them and sticking with my Kindle Keyboard. Amazon won't admit to it but the screens on the newer ones are blurrier and have worse contrast than the Kindle Keyboard. I don't know if it's a power issue or what because they're supposedly the same e-ink display. = 4/23/2012 5:18:37 PM |

Any downsides to buying used (assuming good condition)? I have Amazon prime and would like to benefit from whatever Amazon Exchange access I can get with it, does it matter if I am not the original owner? 4/23/2012 6:05:58 PM |

Amazon's warranty policy is pretty great. My dad's on his 5th original Kindle. They just keep replacing it. Each replacement extends the warranty. I'm on my third Kindle Keyboard. They eventually crack after 6 months or so but the overnight replacement is so great I don't complain. 4/23/2012 6:21:14 PM |

I meant like the Amazon book exchange, which is apparently something like netflix for books. But it is nice to find out about the warranty policy as well. 4/23/2012 7:26:18 PM |

do they still make the Kindle Keyboard?
I've had my Kindle Touch for a couple weeks now and couldn't be happier. It's the first e-ink display i've used so I can't touch on past versions. I tested it out side by side with the Nook, which i liked as well but I use amazon so frequently that I went with what I knew.
I'm not familiar with this book exchange you are referring to though. unless you are referring to the kindle prime or book lending options] 4/24/2012 8:53:58 AM |

^I think you are referring to the Kindle Lending Library. Which is Kindle Device exclusive, but it isn't free at all. It requires Prime, which is $79/year.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000739811
The alternative to this is getting a Public Library card, and using the Kindle Reader on any platform to do essentially the same thing for free. 4/30/2012 6:44:49 PM |

Yeah one would be a fool not to to use public library resources, but the advantage of the lending library (as I understand) is that they do not cap for the number of the book copies being checked out like a library does. For example, all e-copies of the Hunger Games may be checked out at the local library with a hefty wait list due to popular demand, but a Prime user can get one from Kindle Lending library.
I know Prime is not free, but for some people it pays for itself in free shipping on purchases,so things like instant video on demand and this book lending thing are a nice topping on the cake.

^ and if you're with NCSU, you can get free prime for YEARS using the automatic subdomain forwards:
ece.ncsu.edu eos.ncsu.edu math.ncsu.edu pams.ncsu.edu tx.ncsu.edu unity.ncsu.edu social.chass.ncsu.edu alumni.ncsu.edu
what is that, 4.5 years with your original "@ncsu.edu" address?
amazon originally offered a full year for free, so after that one i just waited until i wanted something else and then signed up with my alumni account...when that expired, i started on the different subdomains

You guys could just pay for books. The $/hour of entertainment for a book doesn't even compare to other forms of media.
I mean think about spending $10-15 on a good book. Average reader might read a book every few weeks. Now compare that to going out or seeing a movie. I mean hell most older books on Amazon are like $7. I spent $7 on a beer last night that last me 20 minutes.
And yes I know some of you read way more / way less than a book every couple weeks. I just think in the grand scheme of things people should pay for books. 5/2/2012 3:45:33 PM |

Or you can get a refurb Nook for 125, or a used one for under 100. Basically the same except the Nook has a microsd slot.
For 200 bucks you can get a Tegra2 10" Tier1 Android tablet (Acer, Toshiba) with cameras, microsd, and all the other bells and whistles.5/3/2012 1:54:09 AM |

im planning on buying my fiancee a kindle in the next few days. I was just wanting to get your opinions on whats the best option to go with? I've never even fooled with a kindle, therefore I know very little about them. Is 3g useful? Does touch screen really make that much of a difference? Whats the best bang for my buck? Thanks 7/26/2012 3:18:25 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Well don't get the fire. I wasn't impressed with the screen quality of the touch or regular. I still vote for the Kindle Keyboard. Best contrast screen and easiest to hold onto.
-I use 3G all the time because I read on both my iPad and Kindle (depending where I am) and it syncs between the 2 devices flawlessly for where I am in a book. If you don't have 3G you have to connect to Wifi before it'll sync.
If you don't need the book syncing feature (only read on one device) then 3G is a toss up. One argument is if you want to buy a book where you don't have wifi (aka sitting on the beach) the other argument is you're always around wifi.

Recently got a Touch when my kindle keyboard screen messed up, and I am a bit disappointed with the lower contrast/darker background.
Things just seem less crisp and slightly more difficult to read in non-direct light than they did before, though the touch is very responsive and I think I actually type faster on the virtual keyboard than the physical buttons.
If I'd realized this new one was coming out I may have held off on the purchase... 9/1/2012 11:25:12 AM |
