there is no way in fuck she is going to want the 370 or the Genesis after driving a 135. Why even waste the time?

yeah from a driver/first impression point of view.. you can't beat the bimmer.

Its when you sit back and consider maintenance and leave you on the side of the road-ness that you start to drift elsewhere.

I agree the BMW seems nicer but it is more expensive and I'd made the list so she can look at all the cars that fit the bill for her requirements. When I was first talking to her, she didn't think there was one other car than the A3 that she'd consider, but she liked the Cayman/135 much better.

I just don't see how someone could budget $35k+, drive a 135/335 and an A3 then (imo) drop a class and consider getting into a Genesis or 370z to save $.

Looks like she can get a CPO'd 2009 135i with ~15k miles for under $35k. http://tinyurl.com/cggz9tc

The budget is up to $35k and the objective isn't to spend every last dollar.

We went and drove the 370z and checked out the Genesis. I have to say the 370z was the biggest disappointment I've had in a long time about any car. It felt cheap, un-inspiring, slower than the numbers suggest, heavier than I expected, cramped on and on. Terrible car, ugh. N truly does MSJ.

Drove a 135i w/the DCT. That's her current favorite by a rather wide margin, just can't decide if she wants the manual or the DCT. The A4 and 3 series based cars are out, they're too big.

We're now at:
Audi A3 (possibly upgrade to RS3 when it becomes avail).
BMW 135i.
Porsche Cayman
VW GTI.

Am I missing anything?

GTI? Uh, what about Golf R?

Did she drive the Genesis? 275 hp turbo 4, and 345 hp V6 coming in a month.

I mean shit, who wouldn't?

I'm also car shopping in this price range, but my criteria are quite different. I'm ok with a 4 door car, and I'm pretty settled on an A4. If I change my mind, those two would be at the top of my list as well.

I admit. It did! but 335 is arguably the least reliable of many other BMWs which do not break down. Even though, CPO has you covered!

I don't even see why anything besides a 135i or Cayman S is being considered at this point. Of course, I'm biased--those are, for the record, the two cars that I suggested.

Really, I'd say go get a CPO or still-under-warranty 135i for mid-20s and be ecstatic with your awesome BMW.

Stick on 135i badges
Tell her it's the 135i she's been wanting

Good luck finding one at that price with low miles. Please prove me wrong, I'll go out & buy it.

^There was a clean, 40k mile, CPO 135i on Craigslust about a month ago with a $24k obo asking price. I seriously considered spending the $10k to upgrade my Civic when I saw it. Most of the dealer comps I found were $27k-$28k.

I've had a boner for a 135i or e9x m3 for a couple of years now. Z06 has been for sale for a few months, but not trying very hard.

(or a Seven)

The only thing that sucks about the 135i is that you have to look at it from time to time. That's enough of a reason for me to never consider it.

If you can find something within budget for the BMW or Porsche then it's really just a matter of whether she wants a back seat or not.

Predictably she's hesitating till a bonus or a raise, I think anyway. Believe me I'll post an update when it's done, sir. In the mean time, ironically I'm buying an A3.

The way I see it, there are only 3 choices:

135i
FR-S/BRZ
Audi A1 Quattro

A1 Quattro just unveiled. Tiny hatch has 252 hp and AWD. It is basically an RS1, so I have no idea why they didn't name it as such. Problem is, it is limited to 333 units, and I have no idea if the US will get any.

With a 6 sp manual, 60 will come in about 5.5 sec or less.

^lol.

Worldwide they're making 333 of those and since the US doesn't even get the regular A1 I'm going to assume that's not coming over either. Not much of a stretch there...

Right now audi a1 plan is only for mainland europe, though depending on popularity could expand.

Could settle for the golf R. 256 hp awd.

Ummm, maybe because that's the main only fucking criteria that Ahmet listed? (other than body style)

As for the pics, did you like them or not? If not, post something prettier... as this thread is basically done with, and has become the thread for "Sub ~$35k fast cars".

just going by TopGear

Excuse me, I didn't say A1 quattro earlier. I guess posting right after you brought it up and recommending the Golf R wasn't clear enough.

Hello,

My name is bill and i'm a selfish dick that has an affinity for awd/rwd cars with open source (well might as well be) ecus and forced induction.

Light weight is bonus points, the more cylinders, the better
