Most handguns are, comparatively speaking, pea-shooters.

But don't let that stop you.

If you ban handguns, all of the handguns in possession of thugs, murderers, and other criminals will instantly vaporize.

And they will never be able to acquire any guns ever again.

The end.

We can only trust the government overseers with guns, and no one else. Truly, none of us are to be trusted with such things.

If you hand out handguns to every citizen for free, there will never be another gun related crime because every person in America will simultaneously shoot the bad guys dead!!!

what are we supposed to do? and while containing the situation and stopping this guy is the most important task, for the cops, it also highlights another important issue, which is the failure in truly protecting the people by providing only the illusion of security instead of allowing the people to defend themselves. The government is not a security force for the people, even the supreme court has said that. Self defense is up to the individual, except in this case, the government has arbitrarily made a law stating the people aren't worthy/capable of self defense on college campuses and must succumb to the will of criminals.

There's no solution that will result in zero crime.

The thing is that in 2011, after hundreds of years of gun ownership in the US, and millions of guns floating around, a ban will only take weapons out of the hands of people that are no threat to murder other people.

I'd be interested to see stats on the percentage of firearm murders committed with legally acquired guns vs. black market guns.

A gun is an inanimate object which must become animate through its user. It can be used for good or evil dependant on its user. Stand alone, it is neither good or evil, and can only be oneor the other once someone puts it to use in a particular task.

I personally think the right to bear arms is extremely important to uphold. For the exact reason of someone entering your home to cause harm.

However, I will say that 1 year ago my friend who is in the military and is a shooting instructor keeps a handgun/guns handy way too often. I have asked him to secure them better, they were way to easy for a person to find and use incorrectly. His gf put his handgun in her purse (even though he has trained her on gun safety and how to shoot). She was at a restaurant and was pulling out her wallet from her purse and she got her keys snagged near the trigger (no safety on, dumb), it entered her lower torso ripping through intestines and causing bad infections. She has to undergo many emergency surgeries and died once on the table. It was bad. Luckily it didn't hurt anyone else. As much as I feel for the both of them (he hasn't forgiven himself for it), and she has permanent injuries... but I still felt like if they had more responsibility then that would not have happened. He has trained a lot of people in gun safety and shooting for the military and citizens. I wanted so badly to ask him if this changed how he would store his guns and whether he would lock them up from now on, but he was in no position to talk about that subject. I had previously decided (based on his knowledge and training) that he probably knows what he is doing, so oh well, but he didn't account for this and this is why I am concerned for people carrying handguns around. No matter how trained you are an accident can happen and possibly injure someone else. I am not saying you shouldn't be able to carry, there just needs to be very stiff protocols orrr something

if i take off my troll hat for a second...

what i really believe is that you can't expect civilians with minimal gun safety training to use their weapons appropriately in a stressful situation

in my opinion the bar for concealed carry should be much higher

^^ i can understand that. there are people who have received their CHP that are dangerously under-trained (like that woman in Myrtle Beach who fired "warning shots" into the air on Black Friday)

Several studies have estimated approximately 2-million defensive gun use events each year. The vast majority of these occur without any shots being fired -- usually the mere presence of the gun stopped the would-be attacker.

In my opinion, we wouldn't need a permit to exercise a right.

On the other hand, I realize that this isn't quite how things currently work, at least here in NC.

Curious how often a CCP holder commits a crime with a gun? The requirements for CCP are not terribly strict, but they also aren't just sign a paper and you can carry. I am going to get mine soon, but I don't see how the CCP being more stringent would be a big difference. Not that you should not continue to train, but I have not heard about a rash of CCP holders causing crimes.

CCP holders are one of the most law abiding groups out there.

Sure, some commit small, non-violent crimes, some get their permits revoked, but if I recall the stats correctly, not a single CCP holder in NC has been charged with a violent crime.
