(CNN) – Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said he's not concerned that Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson will tip the scales in November.
"In fact, I see that it's almost a nonfactor," Priebus said on CNN's "State of the Union."
...Priebus argued Johnson lacks the popularity and name recognition to represent a strong enough threat to turn the election for either candidate.

For the 1,000,000th time, youtube has user-based content meaning any user can upload anything he/she feels like within the censorship boundaries set by youtube (porn, copywritten material).
One of these legal and permissible uploads include LOCAL NEWS stories captured directly from the TV, which is what this is and which you hold as a "credible source of information".
It helps if you watch the video before commenting because you waste my time typing this needless response to a dumb question meant at taking a jab at my credibility and the credibility of youtube links.]10/7/2012 2:43:59 PM |

He got 0.93% nationally as of now. Best Libertarian Party presidential candidate performance since Ed Clark in 1980 and more than double their percentage of the vote 4 years ago.
2008: Bob Barr, 0.40% 2004: Michael Badnarik, 0.32% 2000: Harry Browne, 0.36% 1996: Harry Browne, 0.50% 1992: Andre Marrou, 0.28% 1988: Ron Paul, 0.47% 1984: David Bergland, 0.25% 1980: Ed Clark, 1.06%

Yeah, I know. But it's not like it would have made much of a difference. I'm not even sure that write-in votes ever get considered when the D's and R's factor in who they lost to third party, because it's probably harder to verify. It was just a protest vote to do what little I can to pull the Democrats back to the left. I almost considered absentee voting in Illinois just so I could vote for him (he was on the ballot there), but I wanted to be able to vote on some state issues here (CA). /shrug. 11/7/2012 1:56:52 PM |
Flyin Ryan All American 8224 Posts user info edit post |
They count write-ins. What campaigns can do is tell a state to count their write-ins. Write-ins are counted as a lump sum initially and then the individual candidates are culled away from the Mickey Mouses. Those take longer time though because they require manual counting so it's something that likely wouldn't even be known til a month or so from now when the Secretaries of State publish official results.
According to Dave Leip's U.S. Presidential Election Atlas as of the latest count he'd seen for your state:
Barack Obama - Democrat 5,573,450 59.11% Mitt Romney - Republican 3,635,571 38.56% Gary Johnson - Libertarian 98,615 1.05% Jill Stein - Green 57,694 0.61% Roseanne Barr - Peace & Freedom* 36,914 0.39% Thomas Hoefling - American Independent (Californian wing of the Constitution Party) 27,046 0.29%
The Peace & Freedom Party of California. They're a left-wing party that run locally but don't run candidates for president. So this party gets ever nook and cranny left-wing party in the country to come and cater to them to get their ballot line because it's California, you're guaranteed a ton of votes which for 3rd party level politics increases your profile. So they got the Greens before the Greens were big enough to have their own ballot line, Nader when he ran as an independent (he was their candidate in 2008), the Socialists, the Socialist Workers, your guy Rocky Anderson tried to win the ballot line at their convention this eyar, a couple dozen more fringist groups to campaign to win the ballot line. And so who do they give their ballot line to this year? Frickin' Roseanne Barr. But to show what a difference it makes, she only got 12000 votes in the rest of the country but off being on the ballot in California she'll take 6th place. 11/7/2012 3:55:22 PM |
JesusHChrist All American 4458 Posts user info edit post |
Heh. That's actually pretty interesting. Thanks for the info.
Yeah, obviously getting on the ballot is a huge difference maker. And to your point about culling the votes away from Mickey Mouse, that's pretty much the only reason why I didn't do a write-in, because the "message" wouldn't even be delivered for another month or so. It's a shame that Rosanne made the ballot over a more worthy candidate, though. 11/7/2012 4:10:20 PM |

http://www.independentpoliticalreport.com/2012/08/rocky-anderson-comments-on-peace-and-freedom-party-convention/
In an e-mail, Justice Party presidential nominee, former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson had this to say about his decision to skip the Peace and Freedom Party convention last week, despite having won its primary in June: "It was apparent to me that the trip to California and attendance at the convention would be futile. It seems the sole concern for most people, at least the leadership, associated with Peace and Freedom Party is continued ballot access for the party. It’s understandable, to a point. But it seems to me that one’s seriousness as a candidate (including one’s record of achievement, demonstrated commitment to the major issues, and experience), and commitment to continuing on with a movement for change, should be more important when considering a candidate. It seemed clear that because of the celebrity of Roseanne Barr and Cindy Sheehan, they would be chosen as the party’s nominees, although they are only now entering the race. I’ve got a lot of productive work that needs to be done for our nationwide campaign and I probably already spent far too much time, energy, and money with Peace and Freedom Party’s various events — including candidate debates in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles."
As a person that pays attention to such things off and on, third party politics are complete clusterf*cks in and of themselves. The Libertarian Party itself some years is a piece of work, 2008 their convention effectively disintegrated between more pragmatic-minded people and the anarchists as I call them, represented by Mary Ruwart. The Hoefling guy for example on the AIP line in California was a one-state only thing, the California AIP chose to not nominate the federal Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode (Constitution/AIP are to the right of Republicans). Apparently Californian third parties (so the Libertarians, Greens, AIP, Peace & Freedom) are scared for this reason:
"A party in California retains ballot access if either it retains adequate number of registered voters, or if one of its candidates for Constitutional office (Governor etc) receives 2% of the vote. So all the alternative parties are in danger of losing ballot status after the 2014 election, if none of their candidates makes it past the top two primary."
Back to the thread's topic, Gary Johnson beats Obama...in one Montana county:
http://www.ballot-access.org/2012/11/07/gary-johnson-outpolls-president-obama-in-wibaux-county-montana/
Quote : | "The presidential vote in Wibaux County, Montana, is: Mitt Romney 421, Gary Johnson 98, President Obama 25. The percentages are: Romney 77.4%, Johnson 18.0%, Obama 4.6%. These figures are accurate and have been confirmed by the County election administrator. Wibaux County is at the eastern end of Montana and borders North Dakota. Thanks to Austin Cassidy for this news." |

A Libertarian Party national debate will be on C-SPAN tomorrow night at 8:00 PM, and the Libertarian Party National Convention will be on C-SPAN on Sunday at 9:45 AM.
I don't currently have a link for the stream, but I found the schedule here:
http://www.c-span.org/schedule/?channel=1
I assume that C-SPAN will stream what it broadcasts.
Doesn't their convention actually begin today?

Weld officially nominated as VP.
This ticket isn't nearly as libertarian as I'd like, but it's probably the most formidable pairing you could put together. Two very successful and popular 2 term former Republican governors of heavily Democratic states. Both of these guys were successful and are competent politicians. Going to be hard to label them as wing nuts. Probably going to garner a lot of disaffected repubs and some dems. 5/29/2016 6:39:52 PM |

Yes, some of them also booed the idea that you shouldn't be able to sell heroin to a 5 year old.
The LP attracts people from pure anarcho-capitalists to small gov Republicans. The good thing is that a lot of them are ultimately pragmatists. My worry is that they could end up leaning too far towards the mainstream and lose some of the important principles. The Republican party didn't self immolate the way I thought it might so that seems less risky now, but if there's an influx of Republicans into the LP we could end up with no one opposing government involvement with things they don't need to be involved in. 5/29/2016 7:20:59 PM |

Yup, take a cue from what the marijuana legalization crowd has done. They started off with medical marijuana, they've gotten to recreational use now, though with far too much tax, and I think eventually you'll see activists try to drive those taxes down.
We aren't going to be able to say, eliminate foreign military bases, but we can draw down total overseas deployment and make rational arguments for closing nonessential bases in Europe. 5/29/2016 7:39:52 PM |

This is pretty much my (L) dream ticket, from what I know so far about Weld. I'm as much Jon Huntsman as Gary Johnson, so I have no desire for "more libertarian." This is plenty, especially in a year with this sort of opportunity. 5/30/2016 12:00:51 AM |
