Give it a rest, man. You're in the minority. Most people like to eat out of the garbage.

Another way to succeed in DD is to seek out the "rare gems" of dumpsters. Places that throw out specialized items, advertising, scrap metal, etc. A lot of businesses trash valuable stuff. I wish I could think of some Aesop Fable that gives light to the wisdom behind the action.

Bicycles come in handy for scoping out spots. Anytime I'm riding around leisurely and I see a big open top dumpster I'll pull up to it and see whats inside. If I see 100 lbs of scrap aluminum or 10 lbs of scrap copper I'd be foolish not to get my truck and pull it out of there, no?

And it truly is a lot of fun because you never know what you're going to find.

I worked at CVS through college and they would throw out boxes of discontinued make-up. My manager constantly told us we could not take anything that was being thrown away but I'd go back there once we closed and would pull the box out that I had just neatly placed in there.

i would just like to say that eating a cookie that falls on the ground is perfectly fine.

if all you fucks would have done this as kids, you wouldn't have shitty immune systems.

^ha. 5 second rule is erroneous, germs can hop on much quicker than that. i would be more concerned with where i dropped it than how long it was on the ground.

Are we talking about a cookie that we dropped ourselves or one that we just stumbled upon?

Solid ground like asphalt, concrete, tile, etc. is fine. Malleable surfaces like dirt, grass or carpet are much more sketch and should be assessed on a case by case basis.

i took some nicorette gum that was like 2 years past the expiration date from the food bank when i was doing some community service back in the day...it wasnt as soft as i'd imagine "fresh" nicotine gum would be, but i didnt think it would go bad or anything

also i dont consider myself to be any sort of hypochondriac or neat freak but some of you sound disgusting

does it matter if the cookie is on a plastic bag in the dumpster? perfectly clean. If its in some sludge, just break that piece off and you're good to go.

An exbf of mine found a T.V. sitting out in the pouring rain by the dumpsters at Westgrove Towers and brought it into my apartment.

Are you eating the TV? If you're that worried about germs, go buy a can of lysol. End of problem.

First world problems, itpa.

Westgrove Towers is such a classy place.

^Wait are you serious? It sounds like the TV was soaking wet. I don't think the opposition concerns germs...

Yes, the TV was soaking wet when he brought it into my apartment and plugged it in

Trust me, germs were the last thing on my mind when I saw that TV in my apartment

I've never DD'd for food and I honestly don't ever plan to, but I am open-minded to the prospect that the discerning individual can pick some great stuff and eat it safely. the only post that bothered me itt is the one about skimming donations before open at goodwill...rules be damned, that just smacks of perspicuous disingenuity

I used to work in construction, and we would always spend an hour at the dump going though other construction waste.
I got shelving units, promo items, and metal from that.

I just threw out some fried chicken wings and tatertots if someone wants to swing by and grab them. Some of the wings were in better condition (not as eaten) as others.

I love it when the government fights itself. Law enforcement agencies have argued successfully in court for years that once you place garbage at the curb it is no longer the property of anyone, and therefore is fair game for police to rummage through without a search warrant.

The shit is being recycled no matter what.

Which should be the only issue here.

Who cares who is doing it.

Most people throw put their stuff out the night before.

If you spent all night, eight hours, driving around collecting, I wonder how much you could get a night.

55cents a pound for aluminum ads up after awhile.

Obviously the city doesn't give a shit about recycling. If the government still let them bury it in a hole you can bet they would prefer that. The city loses a bundle on those recycling trucks, and the contractor that processes it makes a bundle. It's a perfect scenario for corruption, and the mob hates competition.

Heres my latest dumpster diving exploit. Looks to be an old military trunk from the 40s or 50s? Found the thing full of all kinds of old junk. There were old license plates in there and a few unopened boxes of old playing cards. My free entertainment of the day.

One of the guys I work with picks up all the food that food lion throws out. They know him now so they just wait for him to get there and roll it to the door and let him put it in his truck vs having to carry it to the dumpsters themselves.

He feeds all of the food to the pigs he is raising.

It is crazy. They ate like 15 birthday cakes one day, Bring on the bacon

Not sure if serious.

I know this thread is about eating garbage, but recycling companies do not bribe the city to win recycling contracts. Well at least not in the Raleigh/Durham area, up north, yeah they are likely a lot bribes due to all of the organized crime and corruption.

Companies pay rebates to the city if the recyclable volume is high enough to justify the rebate. The rebate money typically goes to the solid waste/environmental department funds to help offset other costs and hopefully reduce taxes or fees.

Someone was moving out of an apartment near where I live... scored a nice crockpot, a toaster oven, a toaster, and some brooms. All in working order. Only recently did the toaster oven crap out on me. Some of my current wardrobe comes from a dumpster behind a clothing store. Not a stain or even a tear!

When I worked in construction, we would dumpster dive for scrap metal. I was surprised by how much $$ we made selling it for scrap. It would have gone to the landfill had we not done so.

I worked at a grocery store for a few years. They would donate as much as they could to local food banks when things were nearing their sell by date. They would only throw stuff out when no one came for it. I've had to throw away food before that I knew was perfectly fine just because of company policy. If anything at all that was refrigerated left the front door, even if it only went 5 feet before the customer wanted to return it... Trash! I had to throw away several bags of shrimp and some rib-eyes before... Too bad I couldn't have set up a grill out back!

What kind of fucking clothing store throws out clothes? That's pretty aggravating. It's considerably easier to donate a pile of clothes than find a food bank for a dumpster full of produce.

Believe it or not, it was a Pac-Sun. I still cannot see why they threw the clothes out. Easily $500 worth at retail. I kept the things I liked and gave the rest to friends.
