I went to Wintergreen for the first time these past two days. I've never been out west, so I'll say it's second only to Snowshoe in the places I've been. Hardly any lift lines, not very crowded. Things were going really well until I caught my back heel edge and banged my head (of course I forgot to grab my helmet when leaving from my friend's house) . Still had a pretty good time though. 2/18/2013 11:10:12 PM |

wintergreen is probably the best daytrip from the RTP area in terms of accessibility and snow.
it's about an hour and a half from RVA so it's my go-to for a daytrip, although Snowshoe is now a 3.5 hour drive, but i'd still rather make that a weekend if i'm going. 2/19/2013 3:39:20 PM |

Just booked a weekend in Vail for March. Can't wait! Right after my weekend at Snowshoe. Going to be tired of skiing by the end of March. 2/21/2013 3:26:44 PM |

Heading to Snowshoe March 1st. BTW they have a deal that if you buy a season pass for next year you get a pass for the rest of this season for $199. Pretty good deal if you go up there more than 1 weekend a season. Deal runs out 2/28 2/22/2013 7:48:57 PM |

Rolled into Snowshoe today with temps in the low 50s. Lots of melting. Going to cool off tomorrow but no chance of snow...until right after I leave.
Still lots of open terrain though so I can't complain too much. 2/23/2013 8:35:52 PM |

Wolf Creek? Yea, SW Colorado gets a ton of snow (I live in Denver), Wolf Creek is almost always awesome, but challenging. It'll be epic for sure. Drink a ton of water b/c you'll be hiking a lot at altitude.

Skiing out west has completely ruined me. Just spent 5 days at Snowshoe (Wednesday - Sunday, skied Thursday - Saturday). First day conditions were good. Was sunny and in the high teens. No lift lines. We only skied for 4 hours (got in 20 runs) because...well we skied it all, multiple times. Overnight there was a bit of frozen rain and some of the lifts weren't open Friday (Western Territory, Ball Hooter and everything to the left of it). As a result the remaining trails were a bit boring and lift lines were longer than they should have been. After 2 hours we traded our jackets and skis for brewskis and the swimming trunks. Saturday was sunny and 40ish. We decided to just stay in Western Territory (could walk there from condo quite easily). Was somewhat slushy in the sun, pretty crowded but the lift line wasn't too bad. After 4 runs we said to hell with this.
The general consensus among our group is that we no longer wanna spend any time east coast skiing I think we spent around 8 hours total on the slopes, and at least 35 hours drinking beer
(Vermont is great, but from NC the cost is the same or too close to going out west) 2/25/2013 11:06:45 PM |

^^ I don't think I'd do 5 days of riding at Snowshoe for the same reason. I can ride all day Saturday and get my fill, but sometimes I'll hang out at the bus stop and mooch someone's lift ticket for a night session at Silver Creek if I get there early enough to ride Friday night. The guys I ride with who have season passes usually ride a half day on Sunday, but I can't get enough enjoyment out of it to buy an $84 ticket.
http://www.snowshoemtn.com/plan-your-trip/deals-and-packages/the-ridiculous-pass.aspx
$199 for a 2013-2014 season pass to Snowshoe and you get to ride the rest of this season for free. This is the cheapest I've ever seen them and would be a killer deal if you're planning to ride a couple days this season + a few days next season. You get a 10-15% discount just about everywhere on the mountain with one of these (food, drinks, gear) as well.
EXPIRES 2/28, so get it now if you can use it!

Snowshoe was fun this past weekend. My 2nd time skiing. Friday was great, Saturday it was a little rainy but it snowed most of the day Sunday which made up for it. Plus only $17 lift tickets for Silver Creek for Saint Patrick's Day. Did my first black diamond on the Western Territory. Didn't fall once! Looking forward to Vail this weekend. 3/18/2013 3:40:29 PM |

Vail was completely epic weekend before last. Lots of powder. Made it back to Blue Sky Basin (first time in a big bowl like that) and it was awesome. All the blacks with moguls and trees were fun. Just amazing how large the whole area is. 4/4/2013 4:05:09 PM |

Is Steamboat Springs typically more expensive in December or March? Trying to plan a trip within the next year and I'm not sure whether to do it around the holidays or spring break time. Has anyone booked everything through them (flights, accommodation, lift tickets)? I like the convenience of booking it all at once, but I'm not opposed to shopping around for the best deal.
Also...just posted a brand new pair of DC women's snowboard pants in the classified section if anyone was interested. 4/23/2013 2:15:13 PM |

When I went we booked the hotel (Rabbit Ears), shuttle (Storm Mountain Express), airline, and lift tickets separately; but we stayed in downtown Steamboat rather than at the mountain. The town provides free bus service every 10 minutes that is excellent. Just hop on in the morning and you'll be at the mountain in 15 minutes. It's the friendliest and most accommodating "ski town" I've been to yet.

What passes are everyone buying? Thinking of the Epic Local pass. Although for an extra $160 you get unlimited at Vail and no Blackout dates plus Verbier in Switzerland and Arlberg in Austria. Those would be fun week trips for the winter. 7/9/2013 4:17:16 PM |

Question for anyone that's been to Jackson Hole:
Is there a shuttle that runs around Teton Village and the surrounding houses?
We are looking to stay in a house somewhere in the village, but trying to figure out:
1) If we need a car to get into the village at night 2) If we need to try and find a house that's close enough to easily walk to the village
Thanks 9/18/2013 12:53:27 PM |

^^Yeah I had some co-workers try and convince me to get the Rocky Mountain Pass but everyone we're getting the condo with got the Epic Local so I might do that next year. I'm looking forward to not having to drive back and forth between Denver twice a weekend if we want to ski both days. We'll probably go up Friday and come back Monday morning to avoid traffic now. 9/18/2013 1:07:07 PM |

60 days til opening day at Jackson Hole. My goal is 7-10 trips this year between Jackson, Alta, Deer Valley, Targhee, Sun Valley, Big Sky, and Bridger. I'd love to check out something in Washington or make a trip up to Alberta
unfortunately, I'm not a very good skier (yet) I'll just go to socialize and drink a bunch and maybe a few runs 9/29/2013 12:26:53 AM |
