Claiming it'll snow in the upper atmosphere and then we'll see mainly rain with a scattered flake or two.

The main issue is models are ramping things up for tomorrow. The GFS has up to 0.5" QPF for central NC now. This would mean around 5" of snow taken literally at a 10:1 ratio. With that said there are of course mitigating factors (as always in NC). With those in mind in short I would likely cut that in half, but this is one of those short fused situations where there is essentially no confidence at this point. The exact timing of when the upper level energy phases and ramps up cyclogenesis at the surface will mean everything. The stronger the eventual surface low the better cold air feed we will get. Should be interesting. Also what is interesting is this would end up a Hatteras low which is usually the kind responsible for Raleigh's biggest snowfalls (but I'm not going there yet by any stretch).

Id like to at least see some snow in daylight hours even if it doesnt stick. Took the kiddo out last time but it was pretty much sleet and freezing rain which isnt nearly as fun to stand outside in.

I spent the last 2 hours putting in my spring garden. The snow is wet, fluffy and not sticking, and it's not even that cold out. Where is everyone? Driving past my house on the way to shopping, I bet.

"European Model (and others) Still Show A Major NC/VA, West VA/MD/NJ Snowstorm next Tuesday evening through Thursday. The models send a strong upper low into the TN/NC region and merge it with northern Stream energy thanks to Canada blockin...g. If the models are right, a major snowstorm is coming to much of Mid Atlantic States from NC north through all of Virginia and West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and much of New Jersey. The track isn't certain...it could push a little more south (GFS ) or even a little more north if the Block isn't that strong. The time frame is Tuesday evening then strengthening on Wednesday and into Thursday as the storm bombs out over eastern NC and off the DelMarva."

We will see how this plays out after a series of mostly busts in the Triangle this season. Time is just about up now.

what does this mean?

It means a rapidly developing (deepening) low pressure system. In short the lower the central pressure the stronger the storm. Officially "bombogenesis" is described as a mid-latitude low deepening by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. Of course this definition can vary slightly with latitude but for the most part it holds in our neck of the woods.

Yeah I am seeing more mentions around now about models pointing to a nice setup for us to get snow but still may not get cold enough and instead get another really shitty as cold as you can get rainy day which blows

Yeah they know the potential is there if you read the forecast discussion but seldom to they mention it this far in advance. They usually stick with climo in the long range. The latest Euro showed a 986mb bomb at Cape Hatteras which would imply big snows for some in Central NC if it verified. Obviously this is NC so many questions to answer and all the uncertainty in the world.

Okay so we all know the potential for a bust and some rain. On the other hand, if the conditions are right, what kind of snowfall could we be looking at?

The latest GFS runs would indicate a not so great scenario for snow lovers in the triangle. It would be primarily rain with perhaps a parting shot of snow to whiten the ground at the end (A quick ooh and ahh event but not much more than perhaps a short lived inch). These solutions would not indicate a "season saver" for Raleigh if you like snow.

WRAL finally changed their tune. From 50's to high of 40 and "possible" snow. No need to incite bread and milk riots just yet.

Yeah right now for the triangle we would have to hope for snow on the back end with a deformation band. It will be rain before then. In that band it would be a short lived period of heavy snow if it were to verify as some models have it. Either way it is correct that this is primarily a VA event as it looks right now.

Make sure you spread far and wide that this naming scheme is simply a marketing ploy by the corporate whores at the Weather Channel. It's silly and pathetic.

Hockey nailed it. It is a dumb marketing scheme (which of course is working). Thankfully NWS said DO NOT use the names in a big fuck you to the Weather Channel.
