friggin etrade. I had gotten a letter from them that said something about tax information so I figured I had what I needed (hadn't opened that one since I just import it online anyway). Did our taxes this past Friday and got through everything except for the fact that the etrade letter was only informing me that their information wouldn't be available to import until 2/15
At least everything else is done and all I have left is 5 minutes it will take to log back in, import etrade, and then file. Still annoying though, especially considering I got my Vanguard weeks ago now. 2/12/2013 1:28:33 PM |

Might be the taxes on my wife's car then. They were due end of last year, I'm pretty lax about paying those until the registration needs to be renewed.2/13/2013 11:59:56 AM |

Owed $8 to Federal. $750 SC State return. Pretty much how it has been most years for me.
Just used TT Deluxe and not Premier. There seems to be no need for Premier unless you are doing investing beyond basic buying and selling of equities. All my mutual fund and individual stock transactions were really easy to handle: most of them were imported automatically from my brokers and I just had to update a few boxes manually. 2/16/2013 12:27:33 PM |

I'm a fan of TaxAct. All online (maybe all of them are this way now, but i started using taxact 5 years ago) so they can import previous return information, efile and save your previous returns online so I don't have a bunch of paper to hold on to. 3/12/2013 5:24:52 PM |

So I used TaxAct online and I'm almost done with our taxes. We just had a child during the 2012 Tax Year and I'm trying to understand the things we can benefit from and I am getting confused.
This is what I know so far:
Dependent - We can claim our child as a $3800 exemption on our 2012 tax return Child Tax Credit - something different? 529 - something we need to setup through the state? how? what's the limit? Coverdell ESA - something we can setup through our brokerage? I think it's $2000 per year. anything else?
My understanding is both 529 and ESA are not taxable in the future when we need to use it, but they have no affect on our annual tax return this year since they are not tax deductible/exempted now.
Is this why TaxAct never asked me on our current 2012 tax return whether or not we are setting up 529 or ESA this year?

Dependent Exemption - Correct Child Tax Credit - $1000 per child under age 17 (could vary depending on income) 529 - set up a NC 529 plan. $5000 deductible for MFJ per year on the NC return (approx savings $350) - 529 generally grows tax free. You will not be able to retroactively make contributions for 2012, you will start in 2013. Coverdell ESA - not a fan
On a side note NC finally approved the NC education adjustment. Everyone needs to verify they got a $4000 deduction on their NC return if they got an education credit.

^ thanks for the info! Why are you not a fan of Coverdell ESA? It sounds like it works just like IRA/529, not taxable in the future when you need to use it. 3/18/2013 9:56:53 AM |

Their is no deduction in NC for a Coverdell ESA contribution, their is one for the 529 plans. Its not a huge amount of savings but the 529 plan is what everyone does.3/21/2013 8:21:51 PM |

I saw an article recently about a specific group of filers using HR Block that filed within certain dates in February and had form 8863 (education credits) were using an outdated form that didnt prefill some yes/no checkboxes and were on hold or not accepted by the IRS yet. If you meet that criteria I'd definitely be calling them up.

You are probably being audited. Go to the IRS site and use their 'where's my refund' page to see what it says compared to the HR Block status.
