Rodon struggling in the 4th. Up near 80 pitches. 4-2 State but Clemson has bases loaded after Rodon has walked a few, given up two tweeners and a solid single. 3/8/2013 4:15:33 PM |

State fails to turn two against a Clemson speeder. Run scores. 4-3 State, runners on the corners, 2 outs.
Popout to catcher ends the inning finally. Rodon over 80 pitches through 4 innings. 4-3 State going to the bottom of the 4th

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/college/2013/03/saturday-roundup-n-c-state-loses-series%E2%80%94and-trea-turner/
Clemson clinched a big road series at No. 9 North Carolina State with a 7-4 win Saturday, but that was the least of the Wolfpack's troubles. Preseason All-America shortstop Trea Turner, who stepped awkwardly on first base trying to beat out an infield single in the final play of Friday's game, arrived at the ballpark Saturday wearing a protective boot. Turner is expected to miss four to six weeks with a sprained ankleāa huge blow for the Wolfpack heading into Atlantic Coast Conference play. Turner is college baseball's most dynamic player, and he was off to a blistering start, hitting .464/.522/.893 with five homers, 18 RBIs and eight steals in eight tries. Veteran Matt Bergquist started in his place at shortstop Thursday and should be an able substitute defensively, but Turner's offensive value is impossible to replace.
Meanwhile, N.C. State's pitching struggles continued in Saturday's loss, as Ethan Ogburn (1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB) gave the Wolfpack its fourth very poor weekend start over the last two weeks. Thomas Brittle's second-inning grand slam put Clemson in control of the game for good, and the Tigers' bullpen was solid after Clate Schmidt (3.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER) exited in the fourth. 3/10/2013 12:47:28 PM |

^ Offense was a concern at the start of the season and losing Turner hurts a lot. Ultimately State will live and die by the starting pitching this season. 3/14/2013 8:48:52 AM |

Losing Trea hurt, but what really hurt was that we had to bring back Ratledge with a bum hand and he wasn't allowed to swing until the Quinnipiac game. We basically gave Clemson an out each time through the rotation.
The good news is it appears that Brett Austin has gotten into a hitting grove. He's now up to .300 for the season and leads the team in doubles. 3/14/2013 9:20:40 AM |

We played Clemson Saturday without Trea and compiled 16 hits and only scored 4 runs. It's more than just Trea ... it has a lot to do with timely hitting.
The good thing is, I think anyone in the lineup, save Bergquist when playing, can get a hit. It's just a matter of getting those hits strung together.
Bullpen looks great so far this year. If we can get our Saturday and Sunday starters in a groove, we're going to be a tough team to face.

Beat Wake 5-2 and took the series 2-1.
Record is now 16-5 (3-3) and currently tied with Clemson for 2nd in the Atlantic, so 3rd on the tiebreaker.

Lost 8-5 in 11 innings. Jernigan was pulled in the first after loading the bases and walking in a run.
UNCG scored in the 11th off a passed ball and then a throwing error to 1st that resulted in 2 runs.
The lack of quality innings from our starters is starting to tax our bullpen. 3/19/2013 11:02:37 PM |

Yeah I thought a rotation of Rodon, Ogburn, Jernigan was going to be pretty formidable. Each of them have had their struggles, some more than others. Bullpen's been taxed and the offense isn't strong enough to make up for it. 3/19/2013 11:29:57 PM |

Certain we'd host a regional is a little strong. I thought we would be a top tier team, but I don't think there are many certainties in finishing top 8. UNC-CH this year is one of the few that was projected to be that good and actually is.
I don't know what happened to Ogburn. Jernigan's struggles were to be expected -- a great fall and a disappointing season is becoming his MO -- but Ogburn was supposed to be a solid #2.
There's a lot of season left and we haven't had a continuous streak with a completely healthy lineup yet. Hope we can get some consistency on the mound. We get that, we could start becoming the team writers and supporters thought we would be. 3/24/2013 5:18:05 PM |

And FWIW, UVa is near about the hottest team in the country. Not trying to rationalize anything, but an inconsistent lineup with unpredictable pitching ran up against a buzzsaw ... these things happen sometimes. 3/24/2013 5:20:55 PM |

This team is an even bigger bust than the basketball team. Rodon was a legit #1 overall contender and Turner a first rounder too. Our basketball team just had a ton fringe 1st/2nd rounders
This would be like missing the tournament with John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins 3/24/2013 5:35:13 PM |

State was finally able to do something offensively outside of the 1st inning. Pack wins 9-4. Freshman Brad Stone got the win with 6 IP, the longest outing of his collegiate career.
Interesting stat from the weekend: If State scored in an inning, we scored at least 2 runs. If Maryland scored in an inning, they only scored 1 run.
State is now 19-10 (5-7 ACC).

Pack defeats ECU 6-1. Ryan Wilkins was dominant and threw 5 innings of no hit baseball. Easley entered in the 6th and then Sasser entered with the bases loaded with 1 out in the 8th. Carlos was the DH and went 2-3. Brett Williams had 3 RBI. State scored 3 in the 3rd and then 1 in the 7/8/9th.

State defeated Elon on Wednesday 8-6. DJ Thomas and Grant Sasser were great coming out of the pen, both in tough situations.
As with most ACC series the remainder of the season, the series with Virginia Tech is a crucial one. VT took 2 of 3 from Florida State last weekend and their one loss was 11-10. A series win over VT would be a boost to our RPI with VT at 9. We're currently 21st.

Won last night 8-7 in 14 innings. With 1 out, Grant Clyde got a hit and advanced to second on a fielding error. He then advanced to third on a balk before the first pitch to Ratledge. The second pitch got away from the catcher and Clyde slid home just as the catcher got to the ball. There wasn't a play at the plate.

Another thing that is starting to come around for us is starting pitching. We've finally gotten some quality outings and they've gone deeper into games which has rested our bullpen. Stone had his longest outing of the year today and basically his best one too. Virginia Tech threw over to 1st 9+ times when Turner got on to start the 8th.
We're now 24-10 (8-7 ACC) and have ECU coming to Raleigh on Tuesday. Good news is we only have 1 midweek game each week here on out, so that should help our bullpen. 4/7/2013 11:09:08 PM |
