29x30 and 34S usually off the rack. The jackets are what I have the biggest problem with, just being trim enough around the torso and waist while fitting right through the chest. Express pants at 29x30 fit me without any tailoring which is why I always get so many from there ha.

I ain't gonna lie... I've got a couple of nicer/sentimental t-shirts I've had tailored, as well.

I can also wear a youth medium or large, but the damn shirts are usually too short.

I recently had to buy two belts from the "boys" section at Belks. I haven't been able to find a damn belt that fits me for over a year. My most recent one was about to fall apart before I went this route.

I'm not ashamed...you save a ton of money shopping in the boys section.

so in my quest to add more black to my wardrobe i'm finding discovering i don't really have much in terms of "casual black". i've got a few sweaters which are fine but most of my button downs that would work with black are of the work dress variety. The others are made for browns and earth tones. Any tips on where to look or what colors/styles to go for?

I have really changed my opinion on Express and love a lot of their stuff, but their MX shirts are more cut for "dress" than what i'm talking about. I've got quite a few shirts from Gap that are cut to wear untucked and look great alone or with a sweater (again, more earth tones). I don't want to try and wear a shirt casually and have that long tail hanging down in the back.

How about not focusing on adding black? Like you said, black lends itself to being more formal, so I don't think its necessary to have a lot of black in your casual attire. If you still want to go that route, go towards more grey or charcoal that you can pair with black belts or shoes. I have a faded black/dark charcoal shirt from j crew that I can wear with jeans. It's got that washed/wrinkled look (whatever that's called)...so its definitely more casual. I've also got a ton of long sleeve v-neck shirts from banana republics...one of those being black. Obviously those are casual. After that...I just don't see the need to have any more black in the "casual" wardrobe.

I think i'm just a bit too broad for Extra Slim. If i were standing 100% of the time they would be fine, but sitting, movings, stretching about they are somewhat restrictive.

I fall into their Average/Skinny and Average/Slim. I'm a skinnyfat, at 6'1 165lbs (32 waist, 34.5 sleeve, 15.5 neck, 38 chest, 17.5 shoulder). The skinny looks better on me, but is a bit tight, so I've been going with the slims. The skinny is a bit tight in the chest, but fits well at the waist, whereas the slim fits well in the chest, but is a little loose at the waist. I might try the Average/Athletic at some point here. I prefer the cutaway and semi spread collars to the tall points, but have a few of each. The tall points are a bit dressier and pair well with layers. The cutaway and semispreads are a bit more versatile and can be worn on their own.

I might grab a blazer for Christmas, which they just launched a few months ago. I'm normally a 38R, so I'll have to see what they say about the fit.

Can't say enough about their customer service either. I've had a couple of issues/questions and Philip, one of the owners, has given me a call. If anyone is in DC, I'd recommend stopping in their shop. Had a buddy that did and they hooked him up.

I really, really hate Macy's. I have a gift card that's almost a year old and I can't find a single thing to use it on. There selection of dress shirts and slacks is awful. Looks like I'll just blow it on a short sleeve polo or something from the home furnishings area.

Also, getting the "fitted" cut in Express 1MX was the right call. They fit almost perfectly. Now to find a similar cut with better patterned selections.

Yeah I end up getting the extra-slim at Express. Fits me perfect everywhere except slightly tighter in the chest but the next fit up I lose the tailored look in the arms (I just don't wear them on days after I've worked out upper body ). Banana Republic Tailored Slim Fit might work for you as well. They have better fabric and pattern selection and the cut is good. I mainly use express 1MX shirts to mix in a couple solid colors with a great fit. It's certainly not a great quality but it fills a niche and fits me like a glove.

I need to go back to BB again to try some of theirs. Maybe this weekend since we just got a brand new one downtown. I was not happy with the cuts on me last time I tried some and even though I totally agree the fabric they offer is nice I couldn't justify the cost for my everyday work shirts unless the cut was absolutely perfect.

One brand I do plan to get some from is Bonobos. I tried on one from a friend (slightly larger size, but I could get a feel for their cuts) and I got the impression that one in my size would fit really well.

yes, BR Tailored Slim does fit me really well. I've got two from the Outlet. Even though they are "BR Factory" they are still a nicer fabric than 1MX. I wanted a few 1MX because they look great alone, but also layer really well. A few basic colors and you can layer under almost any sweater for infinite combinations.

I really like the Photographer dress pants from Express, but i'm sadly too tall for the 32 and and 34 has a bit too much break. Some say they draw up some in the wash, but i'm not sure the polyester ones would. and i don't want to spend more on the wool versions that won't fit right. No real sense in tailoring Express pants when I could just buy nicer to begin with.

Bonobos is going to be my next stop for pants/slacks. A buddy of mine swears by them, but he has the added benefit of a Guideshop in Chicago to get the right fit.

^I'm a 32x33, which is impossible to find, so I buy the 32x34s and have my fiancee hem them. One of the perks I guess.

Exactly. I think they look great with a suit or layered with a sweater etc. Their solid colors work really well for that.

That's a bummer about the pants though - Photographer on sale is my go-to for cheap dress pants.

Regarding Bonobos; I think I'm just going to pull the trigger at some point. Apparently they have very hassle-free returns so if you aren't 100% sure about their fit the first time it shouldn't be a big issue.

Still repping Tom James pretty hard. If you work your family for gift certificates and take advantage of their deals...you can build a pretty extensive wardrobe without spending an incredible amount of money. I hit up their trunk show this week and got 4 ties for $100 and two shirts for $150 (you pick the design/fabric and they still have it custom made). All together I now have 2 suits, 7 dress shirts, 2 pairs of slacks, and 7 ties. I'm thinking in the next year I can round out the wardrobe with maybe two suits (one black and one summer suit...lighter brown/khaki color) and one navy blazer and I should be set for days and days.

what do you guys think about the length of the slack on the model in the link above? i don't like my pants too long with extra break, but I almost think this look is too short for most people and settings. Especially on the move, slacks of this length will appear even shorter.

hard to say in that picture. I feel like my Photographer pants are all just a hair longer than that; they basically touch my shoes with no break where it looks like those in the picture just barely float above the shoes. Small difference I guess though.

Most of my other pants that aren't quite as slim or fitted as my Photographers have just the slightest break (The slimmer the pants, the shorter or less/lack of a break works imo).

i agree. and wearing a chukka or chelsea boot makes it look better as well. wearing pants with little or no break with a low profile loafer really makes them look like flood pants though.

I picked up a couple Brooks Brothers Factory '346' dress shirts during a pre-BF sale. Both are the "slim-fit" cut, one a more casual button down collar, the other a dressier point collar.

These feel better quality than the Express 1MX shirt, which i knew they would be. But the cuts are a bit fuller than both the 1MX Fitted and my BR Slim and Tailored Slim dress shirts. It's as if BB didn't want to go all the way with a true slim cut, especially in the arms (especially the point collar) as they are just a bit too full for my liking.

But for the price I have no real issues. Just thought others might like a quick review of the fit.

Thanks - that's pretty much how I've felt with them. And, for the price, I'm not planning to buy them and then run out to get them tailored just because the fabric is better quality.

For reference, at Express, I wear the Extra-Slim cut and at BR the Tailored Slim Fit. Just the BB "slim" were definitely not working for me and the BB extra slims I tried on previously didn't seem to truly have the tailored-feeling slimness of some of the shirts I own with cuts I like. I should still go to our new downtown BB to try some more of their extra slim on in person since it has been a year or so.

I did pick up another cheap suit from Express though. 50% off + 15% off coupon + $30 in express rewards + $25 in express gift card from my birthday = an $80 suit. I was planning on it being a cheap backup, but after getting it home and trying a few shirts with it, I think it looks better on me than my other suits and the grey tone might be the most versatile I have now

I wear dri fit golf pants to work, they may looks slightly different than dress slacks, but the difference is not very noticeable at all...certainly not as noticeable a difference as a linen suit, at least the ones I've seen

maybe they make linen suits that are much harder to distinguish from a regular suit, in which case that would be useful information

anywhere that a linen suit would be inappropriate, would be inappropriate for dri-fit material as well, unless it's a pro athlete wearing it.

yeah dri-fit pants have a more subtle difference from dress pants than linen, but a jacket made from it would stick out. Hell, I'd guess the lining they'd have to use to support the dri-fit into a suit shape would probably defeat any benefit from the dri-fit.
