More job-producing legislation

http://www.wral.com/students-right-to-pray-reaffirmed-by-senate-committee/12424758/

wtf is this?

Quote :
"Senate Bill 370 would allow students to pray silently at any time or out loud during non-instructional time as long as the prayer is initiated by students – not teachers or staff – and nobody is forced to participate. Also, any school employees present during a student prayer would be encouraged to "adopt a respectful posture.""

again, this GA is completely insane. this shit is completely unnecessary. they can pray silently anytime? even while the teacher is teaching? if they're called on and they're not paying attention, they can just say "oh, i'm sorry, i was praying".

I think the bill was removed from the calander for today and rereffered to the judiciary committee. Maybe they are going to make some changes to the bill given the negative press.

Now they're proposing an "Anti-Leed" Bill.

While I will be one of the first people to say LEED is 50% about making money, the other 50% does benefit the environment and consumers. Within the 50% that is about the money, there are jobs being created just to perpetuate the industry. The irony is that the legislature's concern is regarding the impact to jobs...

http://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/blog/going_green/2013/05/nc-housetentative-approval-anti-leed.html

Quote :
"The N.C. House of Representatives approved 78-34 a second reading of a bill that is expected to bar public projects from using the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program."

Quote :
"... concerns on the impact of the legislation after it was introduced, adding that there was uncertainty as to how the bill would affect Charlotte-based Nucor Corp., concrete makers and other companies that are part of the green building industry....Samuelson told other house members that, whether they supported or opposed the LEED program, that there was a “whole heck of a lot of jobs tied to it.”"

Like Stein, other members seemed sympathetic to Tesla, if a bit skeptical.

"Are you still receiving government subsidy?" asked Sen. Tommy Tucker, R-Union.

O'Connell replied, "Sir, we've never received a government subsidy. We have a loan from the Department of Energy, which we are already paying off, and we're paying it off early."

I think it limits the number of cars they're allowed to sell via the internet which would force them to open a dealership if they want to do any volume here.

A lot of "free market conservatives" are like "anti-war liberals". Their principles only seem to come to the surface when the opposition party is in power.

Tesla sells cars directly to consumers, instead of through 3rd party dealerships. They've been very successful in recent times. NC dealerships don't like that kind of competition, so they're having their congressmen put a stop to it.

It's really troubling to see the General Assembly approving such blatantly corrupt legislation. No one seems to give a damn.

^What is the point of the current laws if their implementation keeps getting pushed back. Sounds like maybe they need an overhaul anyway.

I neither support nor am I against it, but it sounds like more investigation is needed to see which way they want to go with the bill.

It it's been pushed back since 2009 because communities and developers don't want it, then why not come up with a bill that they'll agree to implement sooner? Otherwise they'll push it back even further.

And I didn't realize Jordan was only 30 years old. I thought it was created in the '50's.

It's only a handful of communities, and it's all developers. there isn't a regulation that the developers would be happy with.

what does this mean? what kind of investigation? how much money would this investigation cost? which way they want to go?

This. This. This.

From my post in the "environmental reform" bill:

Quote :
"I actually think this bill is targeted and was likely pushed by developers. They want to be able to move across the state and drop their cookie cutter developments with the exact same houses and exact same stormwater/erosion/septic system plans wherever they can find a deal on land. Recycling their master plans would save them a lot of money. I actually think developers are a major lobby for all the bills that the NCGA has considered that usurp local control, there have been quite a few. If you get a chance surf over to the ncleg.gov website and see how many representatives, especially from rural counties, are in real estate/development. Hint: its a lot."

I roll over to ncleg.net to look up ol' Sen. Rick Gunn and:

Quote :
"
Office: 312 Legislative Office Building
Phone: (919) 301-1446
Email: Rick.Gunn@ncleg.net
Legislative Mailing Address:
NC Senate
300 N. Salisbury Street, Room 312
Raleigh, NC 27603-5925
Terms in Senate: 2 (0 in House)
District: 24
Counties Represented: Alamance, Randolph
Occupation: Commercial Real Estate
Address: P.O. Box 308, Burlington, NC 27216
Phone: (336) 229-6981"

I want to make it clear I don't hate development, I just hate developers wanting to railroad both local building codes and environmental laws so that they can save a dollar and drop their shitty cookie cutter communities all over the state.

This is the one area that I find troubling to me, being a Republican. I am very much an environmentalist, and I wish we could find a happy medium. Shit, we're getting ready to have a baby and are doing cloth diapers for pete's sake.

I believe in fracking if it can be done responsibly, I believe in alternative energy, just not pushing it down our throats when the tech isn't obviously there yet, and I believe we should wait and see what this bill entails before knocking it.

That being said, it sounds like the sponsor is an asshole that is self interested. Most of your middle of the road repubs voted these folks in for change in a positive direction, and what this guy is doing, what quite a few in the GA are doing, is giving the party a bad name, and will lose the state horribly in 2016.

Not to be a complete ass, but as an ex-republican this mess was predictable as the rising sun. A cursory glance at the folks the GOP ran the last couple of times - 2010, 2012) and their backers (Art Pope, et al) was all that was necessary to see they were complete numbnuts and shouldn't be trusted running a McDonalds much less the state. To be shocked (SHOCKED!) at the outcome is just being willfully ignorant.

Damn. That sounded harsh. Still, IMO, true though.

Hey another ridiculous bill being passed to repeal the gun registration law in Durham. The NRA is winning.

Apparently the NC GOP is trying to pass a bill that will prevent local ordinances creating stricter smoking bans than current state law.....

Currently state law does not prohibit smoking outside. While I thought it was kind of ridiculous that smokers have to practically stand in the middle of the street while on campus to comply with the 25 ft rule, this legislation would inhibit the ability of places like Wrightsville beach from banning smoking from areas besides designated smoking zones.

Wrightsville Beach banned smoking on the beach because of the fucking tourists using the coastline as their personal ash tray. Good job GOP for taking another dump on the environment.

"Not yet," Whitmire answered, adding, "we have at least 27 cases in multiple states where it has."

"You’re acknowledging we don’t have a problem here," Luebke responded. "I cannot see for the life of me why we need a bill like this."

Rep. John Torbett, R-Gaston , pointed out that Democrats have been concerned in recent years about sea level rise – a problem that hasn't yet happened, either.
