Obviously you want to blow teams out in games like this, but whatever. Our team is going to go through some serious growing pains this year. Not being able to rebound or play defense is a setup for disaster in basketball. Who knows though. It's too early to start acting like Earl and Jaybee.

Only having one part-time starter returning from last year will definitely result in some growing pains.

This is a super young team, and for last night being their first time playing a full game together, I am pleased with the result. The team seemed to play better in the second half, as they started warming up with one another. The team we saw last night should evolve tremendously this year to hopefully be competitive by the time the ACC schedule starts. Coach Gott has used the first month or two to develop a rotation, so right now, everyone is getting fairly equal playing time. Once we see who plays well with who, the talent of this team is going to start to stand out more.

So, at a glance, we run 7-8 deep with one, maybe two post players. We got pounded on the boards.

This is going to be like Sidney Lowe's first year when they just had to let Grant, Atsur, and Fells run the floor. Was a fun year, but hopefully Gott knows how to actually maintain the development of his players and beats Anya into shape.

FYI, this should temper hopes for the season. It's gonna be ugly in conference play if we keep skating by against crap teams.

We saw this last year. Margin of victory and level of competition are quite indicative of our basketball playing ability.

No, this is going to be nothing like that year. We have this guy named Tyler Lewis, and I hear he is an actual point guard. That automatically makes this year nothing like that year. TL > Gavin Grant.

atsur was a pretty decent point guard too, but he was injured most of that year

When atsur was healthy we were actually a decent team that year (beat UNC, made a run in the ACCT and then in the NIT). A healthy atsur and we may have been an NCAAT team

Man... Gavin 'X' Grant playing point guard was that season. We did beat Michigan at Michigan that year after Atsur got hurt. We had some jacked up rag tag teams over those first few Lowe years. That ACCT run was pretty unbelievable, coming back from 20+ points down vs VT and again vs UVA. We gave UNC a good run in the finals. Good times

This is why I still have hope for this year. Lewis makes everyone around him 10x better ... he even makes Vandy look like a contributor. Maybe we can't rebound or defend, but we should be able to score on just about anyone.

I seriously don't want to hear the super young or inexperienced excuse anymore. Especially in a month after we have seen UK start five freshmen and run train on the nation. I'm not saying that we should expect to be that good, or that we won't improve over the next couple of years. That's just not a legitimate excuse these days when all the upper tier basketball programs have underclassmen playing a significant role.

Kentucky usually has at least 2 or 3, sometimes more, of the very best high school players in the country join their team every single year. not really the same thing at all. we lost our entire starting line-up, and while i'm not complaining about our recruiting class, we're no where near the same level as kentucky.

Young and inexperienced isn't as big of a deal when you're team is made up of a ton of 5* recruits. Skill alone can trump youth and inexperience. However, our big men clearly need development. Anya obviously needs to improve his conditioning and weight. Washington an Freeman were never supposed to be the instant impact type recruits that teams like Kentucky get. I know what you're saying and you're not wrong. Teams definitely can and do win with freshmen playing big roles. Our team isn't quite built like that in terms of personnel.

My point isn't that this team should be at Kentucky's level. Obviously this is gonna be a long year with some inconsistent play and probably boneheaded mistakes.

Generally this excuse needs to go, though, because every one of the top teams in the country is young and inexperienced and if we are going to be among the best teams (which is where we want to be I assume) then we have to be able to make it work regardless. That's what the top programs do.

Unrealistic expectation. Programs like Duke with Sulaimon(?) and Amile, UNC with Paige and Michigan with Mitch McGary last year had freshmen contribute, but only at the very end of the season. We can expect our freshmen to contribute too, but not immediately like Kentucky.

You completely missed my point synapse. I recognize we are not a top program now. I also recognize that being among the top programs in the nation is a goal of our AD, our coach and of most of the fan base. So if we want to be a top program, then we should stop with the inexperienced excuse.

Most of the top 10-15 programs rely on young players as significant contributors year-in and year-out. Those teams figure out a way to work around the weaknesses of having young players. They don't just throw their hands up and say "well, our team is gonna blow balls this year but it's ok because we are young" like half the folks in this thread.

I was talking about this year. In a month, we will have seen five freshmen start at Kentucky and demolish everyone they play.

Oh, that second sentence makes more sense than the first time you tried it. #1 we'll see if UK actually starts 5 freshmen, #2 it's a little more understandable to rely on youth when you pull 5 out of the top 10 recruits in the nation, #3 we'll see if they "run train on the nation"

I don't see our basketball program saying that, just some nobodys on an internet message board. You should try harder to distinguish between the two.

As will we this year, but most of those teams don't lose 4 starters every year, and when they do, they're not often preseason Top 10-15, unless you're Calipari and nab 5 out of the top 10 recruits.

it has nothing to do with young or inexperienced or even chemistry. this year is going to suck because we can't rebound or defend. if you can't rebound and defend you can do nothing. sure talent can hide problems but only so much. last year we were so talented that we made the tournament despite poor coaching but at the end of the day we lost a bunch of games to far inferior talent including temple.

sidney lowes first team was worlds better because they played d and gobbled boards. it was a rough when atsur was out but overall that was a team that could have made a ncaa run.

some teams are always good regardless of who they have or how old they are because the coaches are able to coach good defense and rebounding.

Wisconsin? you don't need to know who is on their team because they are always going to hit you in the face, shut you down and rebound you.

Then you haven't listened to any preseason interviews from Gott. He is already prepping the fan base for sucking this year talking about how young our team is and how they are gonna have ups and downs, etc. He hasn't explicitly said we will suck, but he has already started the excuses. I like him and I think he has been great for the program thus far, but he has got to stop that IMO.

Show me a year when he's talked up *any* team pre-season. Coaches don't usually talk up their teams, especially pre-season. There's going to be ups and downs, with nearly every team in the NCAA. This whole "prepping the fan base for sucking" is you projecting the bias of the nobodys on this message board onto the words of Gott.

Quote :

Yup. That's what all coaches do.

Exactly, regardless of the expectations. Hell they tend to caution more when the hype is higher.
