Regular season: Trout >> Harper

^Still a long way to go on that one. Harper batted a solid .130 in 2012 in the postseason. Did have a nice game in a losing effort today though. This is Trout's first go round in the postseason. I'd still take Trout 10/10 times...regular season, post season...doesn't matter.

I was 5 when the royals last won the world series. Possible match up vs the cards would be awesome.

I'll not argue that atrocious blown call. I will however point out that the guy called safe at first never scored and wad out on a sac bunt that accomplished nothing and pretty much set things back square. There's also the matter of the blown out/safe call earlier in the game on a stolen base attempt by Frank White.

3 years as a manager, 3 NLCS appearances. Real dumb ass.

So much for that All hyped LA series.

he also had very talented teams to work with. making it to the NLCS doesn't prove he's an intelligent manager. you're welcome to attempt to argue without using conjecture.

Molina (Easily the most important Card) and Wacha #2 starter were out half the season, Jaime Garcia (probably 4th best) made 7 starts. The offense was powerless (Thus the Craig trade) and Rosenthal was wildly inconsistent. And yet here they are again. Explain how he has done a poor job?

I'm one of the biggest Cards fans on this board, I don't get the hate.

[Edited on October 7, 2014 at 8:52 PM. Reason : He just out managed Donny Baseball who has a clearly more talented roster]

donny baseball just fucking sat his best position player in an elimination game. a second grader could out-manage him

none of those things you mentioned have anything to do with mike matheny's ability to make good decisions. the front office orchestrated the craig trade. matheny played whoever molina's backup was.

matheny is one of those guys who thinks its a better idea to cart out veterans over younger players who are more talented. it was stupid the way he kept benching oscar taveras earlier. he makes decisions based on really small sample sizes and frequently plays favorites. like i said, the cardinals win in spite of him.

Tavaras is super talented but also just turned 22 years old and struggled a lot this year in the bigs. Jon Jay hit .300. Not sure what was really wrong with this. Working a youngster in slowly. Pit is doing the same thing with Polanco. Both teams were in pennant chases as well.

also shane robinson, who is most certainly not a .300 hitter and probably doesn't deserve a spot on a major league roster

also this was stupid

Fucking sick of the Giants and Cards. St Louis is an amazing organization (right up there with the Spurs as the best managed), but fuck I am tired of watching them in the postseason.

Go AL. I'll be rooting for the Royals, but rather see either AL team than the Giants or Cards win it all again.

I was under the impression it was a healthy scratch? At least that's what they said on ESPN Radio every 15 minutes from 9-5

^^ All I heard was that it was a healthy scratch. He'd struck out 8 out of his last 9 at-bats.

^ ok, so that's even worse. this wasn't like sitting him on a friday when there are 2 more games in a weekend series in june. if the dodgers lost, which they did, they were going home. even if he was striking out a lot, yasiel puig is really good at getting on base. maybe he strikes out 4 more times that night, or maybe he goes 4-4. no way to know, but not putting a player like puig in the lineup when you absolutely MUST win or your season is over is incredibly dumb, especially when you're basing it on a small sample size or a hunch.

Puig did strike out 7 consecutive times in this series so you kind of understand why Mattingly put him on the pine. Granted though in the playoffs, you stick with what got you there, not Andre Ethier.

he gave up 3 runs and struck out 9. that's not a bad outting. i wouldn't call that choking at all.

He can't hold a lead when it really counts. That's pretty much the definition of choking. Not saying he isn't a great pitcher, and he certainly had a great season, but he cost them that game.

not the offense that only managed to score 2 runs the whole game? kershaw made a mistake in 1 inning, and a 1 run lead isn't much. they were still in that game. the blame doesn't lie with kershaw entirely

Kershaw is now what, 0-4 in the postseason against the Cardinals? But he's their prized player, you gotta keep him in.

I questioned not playing Puig. Who cares if he had 7 strikeouts in a row. He's your best non-pitcher. And it's a win-or-go-home game. Play your best players or polish up your resume.

mike matheny out-managed a guy who didn't realize you should play your best player in a playoff elimination game. mike matheny out-managed a guy who might be retarded.

maybe on paper and spread over 9 innings. but lets be real here. Your ace on 3 days rest gave you 6 solid innings and a 2-0 lead. For any legitimate team that's enough to hand it over to your bullpen to close out the game. Instead you are so scared to use the pen that you send him back out there to face the middle of the order a third time through. This was equal parts choke and managerial mistake.

Not only that, but look at all FOUR games he's pitched in the playoffs. Dude's fantastic during the regular season, but he cannot perform in super high pressure situations without completely unraveling. Mattingly is definitely to blame as well for not knowing when to pull him.
