Quote :
"The taxing cardio workouts weren’t the main challenge for Anya, who got up to 348 pounds as a freshman. It was staying out of McDonald’s or Cook-Out or any of the other fast-food joints near campus.

“Driving on Western Boulevard is hard,” Anya said Wednesday at media day for N.C. State’s basketball team. “I just drive down and I’ve got to look straight ahead, if look to the right a little …”

He catches himself mid-sentence to avoid any further temptation. Anya, an affable big man from Washington, has lost a lot of weight but none of his personality.

Anya has always had a good sense of humor about his weight. He said he does stop by the mirror more to check out his new physique but he said that’s nothing new with the weight loss.

“I did that before; I don’t think that’s ever going to change,” Anya said. “Now, it’s definitely more of eye candy.”"

That workout plan makes no sense. He shouldn't have been doing cardio right after the season.

The off season is for adding muscle and losing fat. Cardio work needs to be done right before the season starts.

This is like really basic exercise science. Not even debatable.

Hopefully he retained most of his muscle. His body still looks unimpressive to me but at least he's not a fat ass.

he's screwing himself. His best bet to get paid was to get in great shape and go pro after this season. Once he gets too old the scouts will kill him for being too raw. right now he still has potential

Anthony Davis never got 10 blocks in a game in college.

He also never had fewer than 2

Like I said in the game thread:

1) The NCAA did not track blocks or steals in the 70's
2) Thompson did not have any easy pre-season games.
3) Thompson didn't play center (Tommy Burleson did).

Quote :
"Add to the list of injustices to Thompson’s legacy, the NCAA didn’t track steals or blocks during his era."

http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/02/16/3628111/1974-nc-state-wolfpack-david-thompson.html

Now if Anya can do it again vs. a real team, then I'll be as impressed as you should for breaking a record set by the greatest college basketball player of all time.

On that note, Anya is playing his ass off, I just hope this carries over to the season and post-season.

What does the obvious fact that Thompson didn't play center have to do with anything?

I don't think anybody here was alive to see DT play. But I'd guess Burleson (a 7'4" dude) was much more likely to have close to 10 blocks than DT. DT was a freak athlete, great defender, etc, etc...but a damn guard blocking 10 shots in a game? I really don't think that ever happened.

And yes...DT did not play center. Very good point. No preseason games?!?! The horror

If DT would've have those 1 or 2 preseason games to really warm up, just imagine how much better his regular season numbers would've been. Dude was probably rusty as fuck the first month of the year

As soon as blocked shots where mentioned Burleson was immediately referenced in the game thread and you ask me what playing center has to do with anything... Obviously anyone can block shots, but the center is sort of in the best position to do so... Also people bring up Thompson being a SG vs. blocking chance, haha.

Another thing, there were no 3 pointers and no dunking, that would lead me to believe there was more blocking chances then vs. now.

Oh and I have a half dozen DT games, including 1974 Maryland ACC Championship game and the UCLA game, but no, none of you assholes are getting copies.

You really expect nobody to bring up a few facts when Anya breaks a "record" set by the greatest college basketball player of all time that happens to be an NC State alum... (in a game vs. "the most inexperienced program in D1 basketball" - Announcer)

Quote :
"1972-73 Consensus All-America (1st Tm)
1973-74 AP Player of the Year
1973-74 Consensus All-America (1st Tm)
1973-74 Helms Foundation Player of the Year
1973-74 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player
1974-75 AP Player of the Year
1974-75 Consensus All-America (1st Tm)
1974-75 Helms Foundation Player of the Year
1974-75 NABC Player of the Year
1974-75 Naismith Award
1974-75 Rupp Trophy
1974-75 Sporting News Player of the Year
1974-75 UPI Player of the Year
1974-75 USBWA Player of the Year"

The fact is we don't know how many blocks Thompson even had in the first place. I find it kind of hard to accept breaking a "record" that doesn't have an official record involving our greatest player by a thousand miles.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/david-thompson-1.html

NCAA recorded no blocks and no steals as you can see in the above link (note the 3 pointer and dunks aren't there either)

I'm not saying Anya didn't have a great game and wasn't impressive, Anya played phenomenal and I hope to God he can continue to do so in the regular season.

I just don't fully agree with him breaking a "record" that is based on a single person keeping that, at the time, irrelevant stat with no verification. I'll watch the 5 games I have with David Thompson in them and see if any get near 10 blocks. Keep in mind that is just as "official" (or more, since I'll be looking solely for blocks) as what the "record" is based on. A single person watching a game and marking down when he does something.

Also, we are discussing how great two NC State athletes are, that doesn't happen often, so I'll gladly argue this, haha.

BeeJay Anya has the most blocks in NC State history since blocks became an officially recognized stat.

I used to sit next to David Thompson at old Charlotte Hornets games. He was also my team's coach at Charlotte Hornets Basketball Camp back in like 88 or 89.

Cool signed pic though.

Yea, I played Shelby all 4 years during High School football, I met him 3 times there (Burleson also had a son I played against, met him twice) and a few other times in random places.

I also have a signed basketball in my gallery that he did in the mid to late 90's at a Lowe's in Hickory.
