Nah, he just withdrew because he is gonna go to Dayton after Archie Miller takes the Wake Forest job.

BC may hire Jim Christian from Ohio? I have no clue who that is.

I know they are the fifteenth best program in the ACC and the seventh best in New England but I guess they are just not even trying anymore.

I think their last list of coaches consisted of assistants to mid-majors and the assistant to Syracuse who everyone knows is going to take over for Boeheim so whatever gig he gets is only going to last like 3 years.

And who is Wake looking at right now?

Hopkins would have been a great hire for BC. Which is why he isn't an option now per the media.

And Wojo to Marquette is official.

Too bad I have to hate their program now. Most importantly who is going to give interviews while K re-dyes his hair at halftime?

word on the street is Danny Manning to Wake is about to be official.

May work out well but goes to show how badly damaged the Wake job was by Bzdelik.

I'll put more fault on Wellman than Bzdelik. Bzdelik is what he was, and is. Wellman is ultimately accountable for the health of the various sports programs at Wake. He fired Gaudio, a great recruiter, and a good coach on one side of the ball (can't remember if it was his defense or offense that sucked).

Rather than get the best coach he could find (at this time Wake was still an upgrade over most programs with up-and-coming coaches), he hires his buddy from Colorado with an abysmal career to that point. And even with a huge upgrade in talent (Gaudio's incoming class of 5 was #8 in the country, and they all ended up coming to Wake anyway), he still proved to be a worse coach than Sidney Lowe.

Wellman should be fired too. He's their Lee Fowler. I have no particular love or hate for Wake, but as an outsider looking in-- he fucked over that basketball program.

Some historical context: http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/tag/_/name/dino-gaudio

Danny Manning would certainly be an upgrade from Bzzz, but then again, anyone who posts in Sports Talk would be an upgrade.. even Earl and burro. But given the quality of ACC programs even 3 years ago vs now, what the fuck is going on when VT hires Buzz Williams, and Wake is an unattractive gig?

^Absolutely agree, should have elaborated to the point that Bz never should have been hired.

That said, Wellman has a better reputation even now than Lee Fowler ever did.

Kelvin Sampson to Houston.

AAC cornering the market for shady old coaches with Brown and him. USF should have hired Pearl for the show-cause trifecta.

I can only guess that a coach would look at VT and see the proximity good recruiting grounds (VA Tidewater area, Baltimore, and DC), a rather large school with resources, and not having to compete with that many big schools in state.

With Wake you're having to compete with UNC/Duke/State for any local guys...and if you go outside of the state, you're going to have a tough time getting kids to come to a small, private, Baptist school. Not that Virginia Tech is crazy diverse...but it's got to be tough to get black kids to come to rich white private schools if your name isn't Duke/Stanford. I bet most young kids don't know that Tim Duncan went there and it even feels like forever since Sir Nut Punch was tearing up the ACC.

Then you throw in Wellman/Dino/Bzzzz fiasco and the fact that they've been the ACC whipping boy for the past 3 or 4 years...and you have an unattractive destination for a coach. Now you can see why VT got a coach like Buzz and Wake is having to take a HUGE risk on a two year coach.

There was a few articles recently that quoted insiders calling Wake the ninth best job in the ACC before the four Big East additions... citing many of the above.

I believe only BC and Tech were listed below.

nope.

and as far as VT goes

Quote :
" a rather large school with resources"

they might have resources, but basketball hasn't gotten any of them, ever. maybe their new AD will change that (seems like he already has, with the money he threw at Buzz). i would imagine selling kids on playing basketball in blacksburg is harder than getting them to go to winston-salem. have you ever been to blacksburg? there's not a whole lot there and there is NOTHING around it.

But you can take recruits to exciting football games and house parties that actually have black people at them during their visits (and better looking girls). What the hell do recruits do during a visit to Wake...go to Krispy Kreme headquarters??

Wake needs to make a good hire. While Boeheim and Dixon consistently have teams that don't finish well they are very good to great coaches. In a league with Pitino, K, Roy, Boeheim, Dixon, Bennett, Tilda and Buzz they better keep pace or they will join BC for the foreseeable future in the land of the irrelevant.

Back when I was stupid enough to read SFN, they had a glowing post about how awesome Wellman was in contrast to Fowler because of all the success that Grobe had. But not just that, really sucking Wellman's dick. And granted, there are few ADs worse than Fowler, but just thought that was kinda funny.

Eh...Wellman has still done well with football. He might have held on to Grobe for a little too long...but it's still Wake Forest football, so it's not like they're suppose to always be above average.

His basketball decisions have been pretty horrible though. So he's batting .500. Which is still much better than Fowler.

Why was that guy so eager to get out of Tennessee?? Didn't he interview for the Marquette job too? I thought he was an alum.

^ Why the fuck did people want him gone? Some guy on sports radio down here in Charleston (which is fucking horrible)...was bitching about Martin after they won they play-in game. He was mostly bitching about Pearl going to Auburn and said that Tennessee should have gone back after him (ruh-tard)...but he made it sound like Martin was awful.

When did Tennessee set their basketball standards as high as football's?

I thought Cuonzo was terrible for the talent he had on his squads.

Stokes/Maymon was as good as anyone in the NCAA in the post.

Because he had to follow up Bruce, but wasnt Bruce. Bruce is treated like a god in Knoxville. There was a petition going around donors to get him fired, etc. He was asked by Marquette but pulled his name out, which makes it even weirder... would totally pick Marquette over Cal.

Martin seemed really consistent, but yeah, didnt get a lot out of the talent. I would have preferred him to stay just for continuity's sake but its not like they are replacing Coach K or anything so I am curious to see who they will get. I am MORE curious as to why the fuck did he pick Cal.

Maybe he likes the West Coast? I'd much rather be in Cali than Wisconsin. I'd only choose a shitty destination as a coach if it was one of the top tier jobs (like Storrs, Gainesville, or Durham).

Picking Cal over Marquette is a weird move. I figured he was just going to hold out for another year or two after he decided to stay a couple weeks ago, maybe until Purdue fires Matt Painter, but I guess he really wanted out. I don't blame him, he was in a no win scenario there. People wanted gone if they missed the Tourney. And not just the loon fans like us

[Edited on April 15, 2014 at 2:16 PM. Reason : guess he didnt go to enough womens bball games]

rumored candidates:

Gregg Marshall at Wichita State - easier to win where he is, but money would be higher at UT
Tony Bennett at UVA - lateral move? has a good thing going where he is
Tim Miles at Nebraska - dont really know much about him
Richard Pitino at Minnesota - interesting... does a lot with little talent.
