It's been tried before. There was a story here not too long ago where these two kids in high school were sexting one another. Both underage.

Well, the girls mother found the pics, and she decided to press charges against the boy. The plans to photograph the boys erect penis to compare it to a video was dropped, I believe, after this all hit the news and there was a public outcry about how ridiculous the whole thing was. But yes, one of the charges the boy was facing was producing and distributing child pornography.

You say that as if there's some "store nudes on iCloud" option that you can uncheck on your iPhone. It's not anything like that.

Here's how it works. You send a text to your partner containing a picture. They see the picture and then you tell them to delete it. They delete it from the conversation, but it's still stored in the saved data folder on your phone. That folder is backed up nightly to iCloud by default. Celebrities are normal people too, it's not like they get a different operation manual when they buy their iPhone. Yes, they use the same services as regular people. So when they plug in their iPhones every night it backs up everything stored on their phone including all photos and videos that they've sent, even if they were "deleted" from the phone. It's entirely likely that they had no idea these photos even existed, and unless they had an above average knowledge of how iCloud works, they probably didn't even know that their phone even used iCloud for nightly backups. It's just one of a dozen options that you click through when setting up a new phone. I'd wager that over half of the people that were affected by this had never even heard of iCloud until yesterday.

Regardless, this isn't really an issue of iCloud not being secure. These were targeted attacks against specific users, most likely from someone who already knew their email address/login id and used brute force to guess their password and not iCloud itself getting hacked and the hackers looking through all the pictures and just filtering out the celebrities. I'm not sure why you seem to think that just because someone has a lot of money that means they automatically gain access to some magical secure place where it's 100% safe to store nudes. No part of your statement makes any bit of sense whatsoever.

I'm not going to lie...but I was extremely impressed with the Jennifer Lawerence nudes. I'm a fan of hers because I think she's a great actress and has kind of a "hot normal" look. And I know she's young and appears to have huge boobs...but I always got the impression that she eats a lot of junk food, drinks, and doesn't like to work out. Her nudes, however, paint a picture of someone who keeps it tight. Maybe they were taken while doing the X-Men filming and she had to keep it lean for Mystique. Regardless...she has now made an unprecedented jump up my celebrity fuck list.

I'm not sure what you telling me that you don't use iCloud is supposed to prove other than you're incapable of following the conversation at hand.

My point was that it's not like there's a button on the phone that says "sync nudes to iCloud" that you can disable. Even if you turn off photo syncing, hell, even if you turn off iCloud syncing altogether on your phone, it's entirely possible that your photos and videos still make it to remote servers anyway even if you send them and have the recipient delete them from their phone immediately. This issue isn't as easily resolved as you two clueless fuckwits are trying to make it out to be. The bottom line is if you are sending naked pictures across the internet, there is a likelihood that they will be at least temporarily stored somewhere and can be accessed by someone who manages to get your account information or the information of the person you sent it to.

Cloud computing is an inevitable fact of life, at this point.

And i don't (and never have) synced my photos to the cloud, on either Android or iOS, but some of the pictures in the recent hack didn't come from photo syncing, they came from iCloud Backups. So even though I didn't sync my photos, someone could rip my backup, and have ALL of my photos.

I know if you sync with iTunes, you can encrypt your backup, but if you just use the iCloud backup, it's not clear to me if this backup is encrypted or not.

This is mostly a tech problem (apple didn't do everything they could to secure peoples' data-- better encryption, better security question system, limited login attempts, etc) and partially a user problem (choosing more obscure security questions is literally the only thing these celebrities could have reasonably done).
