so Tyler Brosius is a prospect in the ATL system - as a starter with the Mudcats

yes, the same QB Brosius that transferred from state in 2012 (?)

Cahill got his stuff rocked tonight. We've got 3 real quality starters. After that, it gets a little ugly. Freeman and Pierzynski went long ball again tonight. Besides those two, little to nothing offensively.

Yeah, we're not gonna beat much of anybody 10-9 or anything. If we win it'll be pitching and maybe scratching one or two across.

no wonder Bautista hits 40 homers a season. The freaking Blue Jays stadium is a launching pad.

Bats showed up tonight. Markakis is 4-4 with a walk...so he is basically 5-5 for getting on base tonight. Gomes and Freeman homer in the 8th to extend Braves lead to 8-5.

jim johnson gives up 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th. 8-7 Braves lead going to the 9th

Grilli gonna have his work cut out for him. Bautista, Encarnacion first two batters up in bottom of 9th.

Grilli seals it with a k of bautista, a flyout of encarnacion and a groundout of navarro.

Yeah, i think the team that just played the Mets is the one everyone was/is expecting this season. And its prolly the one we'll get most of the time. I just wish they would go big in the losing thing so that they could get a top draft pick. If they somehow F around and win 70-80 games, thats gonna do absolutely nothing to better the future. The farm needs some studs.

^ I was thinking this yesterday too. I can't root for the Braves to lose, but in all reality, this team has no chance to do much more than win 75 games tops. I'd rather us lose a 100 and get a true impact prospect at the top of the draft than a riskier guy 6-8 picks later.

The Braves farm system is actually not bad. Top 10 in Keith Law's rankings due to all of the solid trades we made (and that ranking does not include the Kimbrel deal). Hart is doing well so far in terms of building towards 2017.

With Gomes and Grilli playing well and even Young and Piersynski, Hart is setting up even more trade bait for the trade deadline. We just need to hope a lot of teams are in the hunt come late July.

^since we started trading off last years team i've wanted this team to lose so that we could get a good draft pick. If we're gonna re-build with prospects, we need the best prospects we can get. Theres no point in this team playing .500 ball and us getting a 13-16 pick while still not making the playoffs. Its not about panicking or not being relaxed...its being rational.

that Nats game got a little chippy last night.

Also, i'd rather it be anyone else than Simmons making those slides into the bag. I do not want a repeat of last year's (or was it '13?) broken hand.

I'll admit that I am shocked that the Braves are playing as well as they are especially with Teheran basically pitching like a #5 all season. I can't ever root for my teams to lose so I am happy, but at the same time us winning 70-75 games this year does us no good in the long term.

At least guys like Jace and Simmons are showing some offense which bodes well for the future and players like Markakis, AJ, Young, Maybin can all be trade fodder come the end of July.

bullpen is woeful. This offense is much better than I think anyone was expecting though.

On another note, the draft is this monday and Tuesday and the Braves have 5 of the first 75 selections(14, 28, 41, 54, 75). Here is a good primer on what to expect:

Braves select 17 year old high school LHP Kolby Allard from California with pick #14. Commenters on MLB Network said there is a little risk with this pick as he suffered a stress fracture of his lower back not long ago, however he is THE best high school pitcher in the draft.

Next pick will be pick #28.

With pick 28, the Braves select Canadian HS RHP Mike Soroka. His delivery is silky smooth. Sits 92-94 with fastball. Has projectable major league plus pitches in his fastball, change and curve.

Braves seem to be getting back to their 90's level drafting where they load up on HS pitchers early and often.

1-14 Kolby Allard LHP San Clemente HS 6'1 175

Quote :
"While Allard may not be big in stature, he had a huge summer on the high school showcase circuit. The 6-foot, 170-pounder won MVP honors at the Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego by needing just 12 pitches to strike out the side in the second inning. A month later, he pitched Team USA to a gold medal at the 18-and-under Pan American Championships in Mexico, fanning 17 of the 29 hitters he faced. Injury prevented Allard from being able to repeat those performances in the spring leading up to the Draft. He suffered a stress reaction in his back in late March, which was expected to sideline him for about two months. A UCLA recruit, he has two plus pitches in his 92-94 mph fastball that tops out at 96 and a tight curveball. Allard's third pitch is a changeup that needs more work. He has an easy delivery that enhances his ability to command his pitches and his chances to remain a starter despite his smaller build."

1-28 Michael Soroka RHP Bishop Carrol HS 6'4 195

Quote :
"The Canadian bats -- Josh Naylor and Demi Orimoyole -- have made more of the noise "North of the Border," but Soroka might just sneak up on everyone and be the best Canadian in the class when all is said and done. Working with pitching coach Chris Reitsma as part of the Canadian Junior National Team, Soroka has come a long way in the last year. He's been throwing his fastball up to 94 mph, consistently sitting at 92 mph this spring. Both his curve and his changeup could eventually be above-average Major League offerings, with the latter currently being a bit ahead of the former. The Cal-Berkley commit has a projectable frame with the chance to get stronger and should have an easily repeatable delivery. The last time Canada saw a high school arm go in the top three rounds was Jake Eliopoulos back in 2009. A team that belives in Soroka's upside could decide to pull the trigger in the same neck of the woods."

Lottery A - Pick 41: Austin Riley 3B/P DeSoto Central HS 6'2 230

Quote :
"Riley may not be the best two-way player available in the Draft, but he does create the most uncertainty about whether his future will come as a hitter more pitcher. Most teams preferred him on the mound before his stuff plateaued this spring, and now the Mississippi State recruit might have a brighter future as a third baseman. A shortstop at DeSoto Central, Riley profiles very well at the hot corner with his raw power and arm strength. His 6-foot-3 frame gives him strength and bat speed, though some scouts wonder if he has the bat speed to catch up to quality fastballs. While he lacks speed and will have to watch his weight, he has soft hands and clean infield actions. After routinely topping out at 94 mph with his fastball this summer, Riley has operated at 88-92 and dipped as low as 84 this spring. His curveball still has good depth but has lost some power as well, and he needs to do a better job of selling his changeup. A good athlete for his size, he repeats his delivery and fills the strike zone."

2-54 Lucas Herbert C San Clemente HS 6'1 195

Quote :
"Perhaps known initially as the guy catching top high school pitching prospect Kolby Allard, Herbert has made a name for himself as one of the best defensive catchers in the class. Herbert has all the skills necessary to excel behind the plate. He has excellent catch and throw skills to go along with the natural leadership teams covet in a catcher. He moves well behind the plate, with excellent hands and blocking skills. While the UCLA commit is definitely defensively-oriented, he's certainly not a zero with the bat. He takes a clean path to the ball with a simple setup, using his extremely strong hands and wrists to drive the ball at times. Catchers are always in high demand and there aren't a ton of quality ones in this Draft class. Herbert has the chance to be one of the early ones taken, with a profile of a solid glove-first regular with some pop."

Lottery B - Pick 75: AJ Minter LHP Texas A&M 6'0 210

Quote :
"Minter worked just 37 1/3 innings in relief during his first two years at Texas A&M while dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome. He positioned himself as early-round pick for 2015 by pitching well out of the bullpen for the U.S. collegiate national team last summer, then allowed just one run in four starts to open this spring. But his junior season ended there after he injured his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery. When healthy, Minter can pitch at 93-95 mph and touch 97 with his fastball in short stints. He backs it up with a cutter that can creep into the low 90s and show more slider-like break at lower velocities. His changeup is more of a work in progress. Given that he has been unable to stay healthy and has two effective pitches, Minter projects as a reliever in pro ball. He could become a set-up man if he can improve his command, and at worst he could offer more power than they typical lefty specialist."

^Amazing to think that with a halfway decent bullpen, THIS team could be leading the NL East, lol.

Quite apparent the Braves came into the draft focusing on pitching. Almost every pick was a pitcher, lol.

If it's a day game, third base side. The sun sets behind there but it's still really miserable down first base until later. If it's a night game then.. Wherever

Uh we play Pittsburgh this month.. Not august..

I'd get to the gate a few minutes before the opening pitch, buy two tickets to the cheapest section (I think they're like 15 bucks for adults), stroll through the gate and sit wherever you please just in time for the game to start.

In all seriousness, if it's a Sunday afternoon game that's exactly all you need to do. The ushers only check tickets for the 100 level seats, and the 200 level seats are nearly just as good. Saturday evening game may want to get ticket in advance to save time on game day, but no risk of anything selling out.

I'd keep this Jace Peterson kid if I were the braves. He's the type of player they haven't had in a while. Athletic, swings at good pitches, watches bad ones, gets on base, gets clutch hits. I know he doesn't have much power and peraza is comin up the pipes...but they need to find some way to keep his bat in the lineup in the coming years
