I would definitely miss the place if it's gone, but at some point we have to either make it relevant again, which would require getting new folks to join and is unlikely to happen, or just let go and move on.

It would be nice to have a private Facebook group or subreddit so we can stay in touch.

Man this sucks, I have really enjoyed this place for a long time but it definitely isn't worth $250/mo. We either need a much cheaper option or just shut it down. The subreddit seems like the best option even though it doesn't really lend itself to how TWW works. Better than nothing.

i'm sure we can get the cost down, I just have tried to resist the temptation to spend any time doing any major changes to tdub since i "retired." I'm doubtful tqhosting will be the most cost effective option even renegotiating the price, and I'm not really keen on doing a server migration to a new host.

Given that the two solutions -- a significant injection of cash from users or a major restructuring of the site to make it cheaper -- don't look like they're gonna happen, can you give us a no-BS assessment on how long it is likely to be before the thing dies?

^ moving servers isn't a major restructuring typically. It's just a PITA if something goes wrong, you can burn multiple hours trying to troubleshoot it, which probably is not feasible for someone with a bunch of kids.

Typically moving an asp.net application is as simple as copying the application folder to the new server, then updating the web.config file. Migrating the database could suck depending on what type of database its using.

I volunteer to help with a migration if we go this route for what it's worth.

i'd say it's fairly likely the server will get turned off again before the weekend is over. Hoping to talk to folks at TQHosting today to figure things out.


^ the mechanics of doing a server migration are straightforward. I just have tried to avoid dedicating myself to the hours it would take to do it. plus, without a clear strategy for revenue with the ads gone, even moving to a $100/mo option if it could be arranged hasn't seemed worth the time. but, like many things, sometimes it just takes a little nudge like this event to get things rolling. i'll talk to TQ today and figure out a strategy over the next few days

But seriously. I signed up for this damn site my first semester at state. In freaking 2002. I never would have expected that I'd still be here talking with all you folks so many years later. I know maybe 5 of you outside of TWW but I've known all of you online for almost 14 years. Mind blowing. This place has been a solid source of entertainment, legit debate/discussion, advice on just about anything, and dank memes. I was posting here when I got my first college job, first co-op, graduated, first real-world job, bought a house, got married. Hell, my wife has absolutely no connection with NC outside of me and she knows all about TWW. This makes me sad.
