Imagine what we could do with a guy like Theo Epstein at the helm.
He's ended close to 200 years of title drought in the MLB. We are asking for a measly 30 year drought.
For AD I mean not as head coach.

We should just get Bill Cowher to come back as AD, and HC of basketball and football. 1/13/2017 1:13:35 PM |
sgb Veteran 415 Posts user info edit post |
Ok well that is a terrible idea. I think Valvano probably bit off more than he could chew when he was just bball head coach and AD. Plus Cowher has a cush job with CBS or Fox or whichever shitty pregame show he works for.
But I didn't mean Theo Epstein literally. Someone Theoesque. A wunderkind that will view the NC State job in the same way that Theo viewed the Boston Red Sox job. Just because the team hasn't been successful and your rivals are perennial powerhouses doesn't mean you cant sell this job. 1/13/2017 2:54:59 PM |

Nobody thinks it's awful, but it's not rational to think this should be one of the most coveted coaching jobs in the country. Stop fooling yourself, and stop blaming Lee Fowler for everything. He had his share of fuck ups for sure, and I'm not defending his dumb ass, but of these 4 things he's only partly responsible for #2:
Quote : | "Nc state ranks lower than you think when you consider 1) very demanding fans 2) no recent success to speak of 3) 3 other local ACC teams to recruit against, 2 of which are powerhouses 4) a demand by (1) to semi-regularly defeat those powerhouses" |

So let me get this straight. We have a 20,000 seat arena, are in the best basketball conference, have won 2 national titles, have a great fanbase hungry for a winner, have always recruited well, pay our coach the third most in the said best conference, but nobody wants to coach here?
Seems legit. Guess we should just shut the program down. 1/13/2017 6:41:25 PM |

not one person in this thread has come anywhere close to making that argument. This started b/c someone claimed we were borderline top 10 coaching location and some argue that is optimistic. Pretty big jump from "we're not top 10" to "nobody wants to coach here"

also i cant prove it but i would bet, with incentives/sponsorships, Gott and staff are lower than 3rd in pay.

don't know what yow's thinking on this is, but to me...not making the NCAAT with the talent and depth on this team, that's a fireable offense. especially when considering how putrid the team has looked defensively without really ever improving or making an attempt at defensive effort. i realize that might be a little harsh considering Gott has taken us to two Sweet 16s (only one other appearance in like 25 years before that) and has elevated the program's image a lot. missing the tourney every once in a while sucks, but by itself is not grounds for immediate firing. for example, last year's NCAAT miss is excusable ad forgiveable even if it was a terrible season overall. but this year, the talent is there for this to be a top 25 team. and to play like we've got no direction, motivation, our intensity is pathetic.1/16/2017 7:29:01 AM |

It's not like we are losing close games and just some bad breaks too. If we had this record with like 2 OT losses and played UNC tough on the road it would be far different. But we aren't even competitive right now. This team looks so lost on both ends of the court. We generate no transition and our bad offense lets other teams run on us and further expose the bad defense.
We should be using our depth. Pressing. Being athletic. Total mess... 1/16/2017 12:59:46 PM |

short of a scandal emerging or getting totally, embarrassingly blown out the rest of the season, I don't see Yow doing anything. I hate that we're handcuffed by an AD that has one foot out the door. If she doesn't want to make those kinds of decisions, she should step down too. I think we'll end up with 16-17 wins. Not enough to make the NCAAT but not enough to force the administration's hand either. 1/16/2017 1:11:02 PM |

I think the "Yow won't act" stuff may be overblown. From what I've read, DD was on thin ice before the UNC game this season but that, and the bowl, helped shore him up a bit.
Obviously everyone has their "source" and w/out hearing from Yow directly, it's just conjecture, but I wanted to throw out this contrasting view. 1/17/2017 5:14:52 PM |

^i certainly hope that's the case. I generally like Yow, but she can't allow her retiremement plans to potentially hinder the progress of our revenue sports. Whether we make a move at head coach or not, I hope the final decision isn't influenced by her future retirement 1/17/2017 5:21:16 PM |
ncsuallday Sink the Flagship 9818 Posts user info edit post |
even if it's not her voluntarily influencing such a decision, it will have an effect. in other words, she may be perfectly willing to fire/hire but it will likely have a negative effect on whoever we try to get because who wants to come into a situation not knowing who your boss will be? unless they're just dead set to come coach here and don't care, but historically speaking this job hasn't been super attractive.
imo the best course of action is to see how Wake and Pitt shake out. if we lose there, the season is pretty much over. at that point, Yow should formally announce her retirement for this summer so we can get an AD in waiting before the end of basketball season and can better position ourselves to make a hire. 1/17/2017 5:44:42 PM |

It's not just about her not wanting to go through an entire coaching search as she is trying to leave, it's about trying to attract the right coach. What up-and-coming coach that we actually want/need would agree to go to a program knowing his AD was about to change?
Just like Yow made Doeren and Gott her "guys", the next AD will definitely want some say in who their "guys" will be. What coach wants to jump into the buzzsaw that is the ACC and Tobacco Road on top of not knowing who their boss will be or if they'll have any plan on keeping them around if they have a couple of rough years in the beginning? 1/17/2017 5:58:13 PM |
alfredough All American 1121 Posts user info edit post |
Would Yow be able to retire early or does she have to be here a certain amount of time longer before she can retire? If she is eligible to retire this year, that would help. I would hope she is fully aware of the difficulties in hiring a new coach with a new AD coming in and would therefore retire if she decides a new coach is needed. It's not like she would be retiring much sooner than she was going to anyway.
Has a program ever had an interim coach for more than the remainder of a season? If she decides Gott needs to go, maybe she could have an assistant be an interim coach until she retires. If Gott does poorly enough, it probably wouldn't hurt to try rather than just waiting until she's done. 1/17/2017 6:19:02 PM |

the more I think about it, the more I like Keats. I feel like this is a no-brainer for him. It's a two hour difference. If he has kids, they could probably even stay in Wilmington or at least stay in touch with their friends. Feels like an easy sell to his family and an obvious career/salary jump. If we can offer him early, I feel like he'd come here and wouldn't be motivated to leave for a long time.
Archie would be stellar, but is he really in the cards? I know he's a State grad but he'd also know the cons of coaching here too.
tl;dr - Keats seems very realistic and has a huge ceiling 1/18/2017 2:53:47 PM |

I mean, its quite simple
If Gott fails, fire him. Hire new coach. If Gott succeeds, keep da man. Pay da man.
