I know he's just a freshman, but Hellums is just not good. He shoots knuckle-ball 3s and gets lost on defense regularly. And to supposedly be athletic, he looks like a sloth most of the time. Hopefully Lockett get a his minutes in the tourney. 3/14/2019 2:35:25 PM |

If shots are not falling this team gives up. They keep shooting more and more and bricking more and more, probably flashbacks from the 24 point performance. 3/14/2019 2:39:07 PM |

That last three was a garbage shot so I'm not counting it in this stat.
Thats 5 assists in 48 shot attempts.
Great team ball today. 3/14/2019 2:39:28 PM |

He's better defensively than either Walker or Beverly, who both regularly lose their guy on defense or fuck up a switch on a screen. Also Lockett and Hellems don't play the same position.3/14/2019 2:40:55 PM |

^^Pretty sure our wings are all interchangeable (Dorn, Bryce, Hellums, Lockett). Positionless by design to switch off screens. 3/14/2019 2:45:52 PM |

Funderburk does have a solid mid range shot, he’s our best FT shooter and 100% is an ACC caliber big3/14/2019 2:54:33 PM |

Funderburk is the best big we've got. I'm not doubting that. I just don't see him having reliable fundamentals to call him a high quality ACC big.
I'd rather have a guy like Maye from UNC as a walk on who knows how to pass, box out, ready to score w/ hands up, run the floor, and not get in foul trouble.
Funderburk has been getting good minutes, but overall, NCSU bigs are clunky at best. 3/14/2019 3:05:24 PM |

DJ is the opposite of clunky to me. He's one of the most skilled and agile bigs I can remember at state. (Though admittedly that's not saying much) 3/14/2019 3:06:12 PM |

Funderburk would have better stats if the guards would pass the ball too. I'm not putting it all on Funderburk.
Without him on the court getting his 4-8 rebounds and 6-10 points per game this team would be in serious trouble. 3/14/2019 3:06:13 PM |

Wyatt Walker is a case of the missing man (and a senior).
Twista, my point being that Maye was never asked to be the man. He still developed behind burger boys as a walk on.
My comment was that NCSU doesn't have bigs. We have a single big in Funderburk that is asked to do it all, which isnt fair to him and it leads to him overplaying and getting those quick fouls.

Yes, we should get someone like Zion next year. Maybe also let's get a more skilled big like maybe Kevin Durant. Also we need better shooters so we should get somebody like Steph Curry to keep defenses honest.

Yurtseven was pretty good but didn't seem to fit Keatt's system. Anya was a good defensive player. If you're strictly talking about centers, maybe not a ton, but we've had some solid power forwards. 3/14/2019 3:17:23 PM |

I welcome any summation of NCSU big men over the last decade.
Here's mine.
in the last 10 years who are the memorable high quality bigs NCSU has had?
NardDog - loved Omer - bust Abu - flaky Martin Twins - not counting b/c more 3 than a 4/5. Doing very well for the other Wolfpack. BJ Anya - garbage dumpster fire TJ Warren - Bless TJ and his incredible mid game and finishing. Rich Howell - Rebound god, played his role well Vandenturd - no comment Thomas de Thaey - scared Jevoni Robinson - nothing notable besides "Jevoni, block that shit" from Gottfried CJ Lazy - never got better, was a high school star and got outplayed Tracy Smith - solid player that developed imho, much like Richard Howell. Deshawn Painter - you're call. I'm 50/50 on him. Dennis Horner - flaming tattoos of sadness
This goes back to 2010.
I count 4 good bigs in 10 years.

Omer was not a bust. BJ holds the school record for total blocks (and blocks in a game) Several of those aren't even "bigs"
Didn't Jevoni get a spot on a practice team in the NFL or something? 3/14/2019 3:30:51 PM |

No this team has really not quit all year. That’s been possibly our best trait. Today was bad. But this team shown very little “quit”.3/14/2019 3:31:15 PM |

Tracy Smith was a crafty offensive player but atrocious on the defensive end and a poor rebounder for a big. Richard Howell was a beast on the boards but also a beast at fouling. CJ Leslie was talented, but poorly motivated. Painter did nothing in his time here. Vandenberg was a waste of a scholarship. Freeman was essentially a poor man's Howell. Anya clearly enjoyed eating more than basketball, but even as a human bowling ball was the best defensive center of the decade by far. Abu was an athletic freak who never really learned how to play basketball besides dunking.
So yeah, our last 10 years of big men isn't really impressive. And I even left out standouts such as Thomas de Thaey and Ted Kapita.
Funderburk is all around better than all of them right now except Leslie. He'll end up better as long as he isn't a headcase.
Disclaimer: I am the biggest Anya fan in the world. If he had had a decent coach to kick him in the ass, he could have been a legend. He had quick hands and feet at 350+ lbs. He would have been a nightmare on both ends of the court at 290. That was a talented kid.] 3/14/2019 3:34:00 PM |

I would say I'm most excited about Funderburk given his agility and athleticism. Great free throw. Good effort. Perhaps I was hard on Funderburk after comparing him to the lats decade of bigs at NCSU. I'd put him in the "best of" class for the last decade at NCSU.
Since J.J. Hickson, no standout big has really been a go to guy as a 4/5. 3/14/2019 3:41:07 PM |

I remember one possession he brought the ball up court and immediately pulled up at the ft line with salt in his face
A 1) no pass possession 2) shooting early in the shot clock 3) very contested 4) mid range shot
Hard to find a worse possession than that. 3/15/2019 9:21:49 AM |
