^^^^I don't know if I'm trolling or if you are.

I'm being completely serious. That's what I really do. I mean, if you want to follow with interest, certainly go for it. It's not that I actively want them to lose as some self-fulfilling prophecy. I wish they would go undefeated for eternity. But by having low expectations, I get to enjoy a moderate positive reaction when they win, and a "meh" reaction when they invariably lose. It doesn't ruin my weekend anymore, and I don't engage in friendly sports banter with work colleagues. They mostly know I don't care. So one less small talk commitment. Works for me. I recommend.

Can we just stop saying that losing at #5 Clemson, as the underdog was “shitting the bed”?

We nearly shit the bed against ecu. We might shit the bed against Louisville or whoever later this year. Last night wasn’t a bed shitting.

I believe the anger and disappointment should be directed at the ACC for scheduling this game so early in the season. Put this as game 8 or 9 so that either 1) Have already had divisional aspirations spoiled or 2) we get to hang onto hope for a few weeks longer.

Anyways. Divisions are done after this year and that’s good!

When I was a student, I really cared, and it scarred me in some ways. I remember a specific weekend (although the details are now starting to fade) where NC State lost a very close game they were in position to win, and then moments after that we flipped channels to watch Carolina win a game they should have lost on some BS, and THEN I had to start on a bunch of homework I'd procrastinated that was due on Monday. My mood was shitty, to say the least. But eventually I asked, "Why am I doing this to myself? What do I gain from it?" I wasn't able to come up with good answers, so I gradually implemented an emotional detachment that I feel has served me well since.

^^I've gotten better at that over the years at avoiding the lows. I've been adopting DMSs positive outlook and really enjoyed tww sports talk over the last 6-9 months. I'll never emotionally detach bc I love sports and NC State sports has huge ties to family and childhood for me.

Good point. I don't have any childhood attachment at play. I can still watch and want them to win, but it's more like I'm a slightly non-neutral third party. Personally, I feel the same about NC State Football today as I did yesterday and the day before that. Would have been nice if they won. Maybe next time.

I'll just say I hope I always care enough to be disappointed by a loss (or be 'mildly sad' if the expectations past of disappointed throw anyone off). Sports and sports fandom bring me alot of joy and excitement, I would prefer not to lose that. I'll take a little sadness with.

Being a fan requires a lot of emotional investment (and sometimes financial investment). And rarely, for the majority of sports teams, is not ever a good return on investment. Most teams don’t win championships. I’m still very much emotionally invested in State sports, for better or for worse. I’ve just accepted that I won’t ever experience what it’s like to be an Alabama football fan. So I try my hardest to just enjoy the ride. I still get pissed at games and spend too much time on message boards and Twitter. I dunno. I guess it’s like playing the lottery. I know I’m not gonna win the mega millions jackpot but it’s still fun to play every once in a while and get your hopes up.

And I don’t think any of us are saying not to be upset by the loss. I just take exception with the doom and gloom of “you know we’re gonna lose to wake”, “here we go again”, “8-4 is the best we can hope for” or whatever.

I like this. I can’t completely emotionally divest. But I aim to be realistic and do my best to enjoy the good parts because they can be oh so fleeting.

My issue is with people tripping over themselves in a rush to declare this a failure or a bed shitting or guaranteeing a loss to Wake while the fucking Clemson game is still within reach. Or in the immediate aftermath of a 10 point road loss to a top 10 team acting like “it’s the same as it always is”. Realistic expectations are exactly what I’m arguing in favor of. I’m saying to take a fucking a second and just enjoy being nationally relevant because it might be a while before it happens again.

We’ll probably go 9-3. And i wouldn’t view that as an abject failure. That’s really fucking good for NC State.

I probably should step away from this particular angle of the conversation because I don’t want to tell people that they are enjoying sports incorrectly. That’s not my intention, so continue to consume sports in whatever way you choose.

I don't think that would be a failure either, State is a strong midtier football program that enjoys spurts of being in the top 25. That's way more than a lot of teams can say.

You do have to admit though that everytime State seems to be on the cusp of a being a top 10 program, shit happens.

First, there’s a HUGE difference in being ranked top 10 in a given season and actually being a top 10 program. We’re no where near being a top 10 program. But to your point, I just don’t see losing on the road to #5 as “shit happens”. In 2002 when we lost to GT, sure that was shit happening. The path is still there for us to be a top 10 team this season. Offense needs major work. I’m not predicting that we finish top 10, but it’s not impossible. 10-2 or so would have us right there.

It’s not my money so if we have some big donors that wanna go all in on football, I’m good with that. I think Clemson is an example of an athletics dept that went all in on football and it’s probably been to the detriment of other sports there. Especially in the ACC where we don’t have SEC or B1G money.
