Scratch that. Suite isn't gay, it's good for people watching and making fun of douches and their striped shirts.

i know most people don't care about local elections, but i can't believe Belk won district judge

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/opinion/story/264788.html

Quote :
"In North Carolina, judges are elected. You can argue that makes them accountable to voters – which it does, in theory. But reality trumps theory.

Most voters don't know judicial candidates, even by reputation. That's a risky way to run a justice system. This year's Mecklenburg District Court elections provide good reasons why.

“Neither should be a judge.” “This is enough to make me cry.” “An absolute mockery … ” Those remarks came in background interviews with judges and lawyers well-acquainted with Mecklenburg courts and judicial candidates. In too many races this year, the choices are between “unqualified” or “intemperate” – or “lousy” and “even worse.”

One especially troublesome race pits District Court Judge Ben Thalheimer and William “Bill” Belk. Belk, a millionaire from the local retail family, has a law degree but has hardly practiced law. And he looks to be running a grudge campaign.

Belk has openly said he's running because he's angry over his treatment by judges during his lengthy divorce case. One cited him for contempt; the day the contempt order arrived Belk went to Raleigh and filed to run. He aims to unseat Thalheimer, who was, he told the Observer, “the worst.” Thalheimer, one of three judges in the case, awarded child custody to Belk's ex-wife plus a majority of the couple's $5 million joint estate.

Belk's right when he says the state justice system has flaws. And while Thalheimer, a judge since 2003, is a hard-worker he also has a reputation as erratic, and he isn't a vigorous campaigner.

But Belk has neither the temperament nor legal grounding to fix anything in the justice system. Further, if he succeeds in ousting Thalheimer – and because he can afford plenty of signs and ads, he might well win – that could send a chilling message to other judges: Don't anger rich, influential people whose cases come before you or they'll use their money and influence to kick you out of office. That's the opposite of what a justice system should be.

Belk, even as a not-very-practiced lawyer, should know better. That he doesn't shows he's not the kind of person you want as judge."

It's b/c the Democrats were pushing straight ticket voting so much. Something like 56% of the Democrats that voted early did straight ticket voting. I already expressed my feelings on McCrory not winning over in Chit Chat.

CMS
Total Enrollment - 132,281
Budget - $1.25 billion

WCPSS
Total Enrollment - 137,706
Budget - $1.78 billion

Seriously? A $530 million dollar difference for 5,425 more students. The enrollment in CMS schools should actually be higher, but a ton of people put their kids in private schools b/c they are fed up with how poor the school system is.

I had dinner with a girl at Frankie's over on E. Morehead last night. Very good food and service. If you like having Frank Sinatra and other jazz music playing at a low level while you eat Italian food then this is the place for you.

"'Large fight' at Buckhead Saloon; shooting nearby

Police stayed busy early Sunday morning in Charlotte's uptown area, dealing with a fight inside a North College Street bar and a drive-by shooting nearby.

The disturbance broke out shortly after 2:30 a.m. at the Buckhead Saloon, on North College Street at East Fifth Street. Police described the melee as "a large fight," but they did not say what triggered the brawl.

However, police said they made several arrests in the case.

The shooting happened a short time later and about two blocks away, on East Seventh Street near North College Street.

Police say a man was shot in the back by a motorist who drove off, headed northbound on North College Street, in a silver Infiniti. Police released only sketchy details in the case. There was no description of the suspect, and police did not say what might have led to the shooting.

They said the victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center. "

Now was this INSIDE Buckhead or did it occur with the riff-raff that seems to like to congregate OUTSIDE Buckhead?

"About that uptown fight

I did a little digging to find out more about the "brawl" that happened uptown early Sunday morning.

I thought it was a little fishy that the Observer story said the fight happened at Buckhead Saloon at 2:41 a.m. when the bar -- at North College and Fifth streets -- is normally closed. The story was based on an incident log filed by CMPD over the weekend that described a large fight inside the bar.

Turns out the fight occurred out on the sidewalk a short distance up the block.

"Our doors are locked at 2:15," said Buckhead manager Wes Cumberland.

Buckhead staff was closing out registers and cleaning up for the night when they noticed the blue lights of police cars outside.

Cumberland and assistant manager Jason Astephen said none of the people involved in the fight was at the bar.

Cumberland said the fight involved Marines who had attended the Marine Corps Ball at the Marriott Center City at 100 W. Trade St. earlier in the night.

"I think they (CMPD) associated us with the fight because we're right there on the corner, but College Street is a walkway for all of the bars in the uptown entertainment district and a lot of people park in that parking structure," Astephen said.

A police report had not been filed as of Monday afternoon, but a CMPD sergeant confirmed Monday that the fight happened outside of Buckhead.

He said the fight happened when two groups passed each other on the street. One man said something about another's girlfriend and the fight broke out between the two men.

"Probably the only relevance to Buckhead was the fact that one of their bouncers came out to try to break the fight up," the sergeant said."

Hey does anyone live in the South Blvd corridor and saw about three gigantic flashes of blue light last night? Literally it took up the entire sky and then I saw some firetrucks headed in that direction. I would say around the intersection of South and Archdale.

This was around 11:45-12am

That's what I guessed but didn't hear anything like an actual explosion (I heard the implosion of the old Coliseum of Tyvola from my place)...it was pretty cool to see the sky light up like that, hopefully no one was hurt.
