Is anyone looking to get rid of a shotgun. I'm looking for my first shotgun. Not looking for anything fancy or expensive. Haven't decided what gage I want so I'm open to suggestions. Let me know (pms probably better than posting here)

Well id like a pump but it depends on what people are selling and what the prices are. I'm pretty open. It really depends on what comes up on here.

go with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500

I like the Remington better but just my opinion

I would really like to buy a Mossberg off of someone...I dont need a shotgun for hunting...I just want one for home defense.

what are the differences for a novice in the remington, mossberg and beretta models just mentioned?

MOSS is cheapest, then remington, then beretta

personal defense, i'd go:

Moss 500 or 590
remington 870 - they've a few variants

I am just curious as to what makes them different...are any of those more reliable than the others? easier to clean/maintain? what?

The Mossbergs and Remingtons are all fine.
They should all work without problems.
The Remington 870 will have slightly better fit and finish, but costs slightly more. Their actions are a little smoother too due to better parts fit. But, all pumps will smooth out nicely with a lot of shooting.
The Rem 870 is very very slightly easier to break down and clean. The difference is marginal, but there is a difference.

The practical differences are in the controls and that's what you should base your choice on.
The Rem 870s have safeties behind the trigger and slide releases in front of the trigger.
The Mossberg 500 has safety at the top rear of the reciever and slide release behing the trigger.
The Moss Maverick has similar controls as the Rem 870.

IMO the tang safety of the Moss 500 is more natural because you don't have to move your trigger finger to work it. The slide release can also be worked with your middle finger, again without you moving your firing hand.

If you wanna go cheap, get a Mossberg Maverick 88.
It's similar to the Mossberg 500 and should work just fine.
They come in short barreled versions for home defense too.

if u wanna compare mossberg and remington look at the moss 835 and rem 870 they are closer to each other in my opinion as far as quality goes.

Whats better about a 500 than an 88? (Mossberg)

Nothing really.
The controls are different, but not necessarily better.
The 500 has more factory options.

The 500 used to have better fit and finish than the 88, but now are comparable.
The 88 also used to have only 1 action bar, but now they have two like the 500.

I forgot to mention...
The standard finish on the Mossberg500 and 88 is a teflon-like paint on the aluminum reciever and blueing on the barrel.
The Rem 870 has a black oxide steel reciever and black oxide barrel.
The black oxide looks a little better but both the black oxide and blueing will rust equally the same.

Forgot to mention #2...
It's been proven by some shotgunners that the steel reciever of the 870 will last longer than the aluminum reciever on the Moss 500/88.
However, we're talking shitloads of rounds, in excess of 200k.
Your everyday gun owner won't come anywhere close to reaching that many rounds in one lifetime.

I own an 870 and a 500, so I'm not biased either way.
The Remington 870, Mossberg 500/535/590/88/835, whatever, they all work fine. Some just have different options taylored to different buyers. In the bare bones version they's not much difference.

how do you keep it from rusting? is that what oil is for?

I keep mine from rusting by refinishing with Gun-Kote

But yeah, oil is good.
If you take a lightly oiled patch of cloth and apply a light coating of oil on all of the metal then you won't have rust issues.
Keep it clean too, dirt (and sometimes powder fouling) holds moisture. If any gun gets wet, clean it.
Don't store guns in humid spots either.

For oil I like Breakfree CLP. You can find it at Walmart.
It's not the absolute best cleaner, lubricator, or preservative, but it does all three things very well.
Other products do one of the three things better, but no other product has a good balance between the three.

[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 4:15 PM. Reason : Don't worry, rust isn't really a big deal if you have half a brain]

I have been watching the market over the past 3 months. Prices have steadly gone up and up and up. Come January, I bet most prices will double from what they are now.

^^^only the autoloaders.

Pumps, and single shots are ok.

I can't remember if he puts double barrel shotguns in the same category are machine guns though.

But, I think it will be 2 years or more before they move to any new gun control, unless there is a knee jerk reaction to some nut job.

looking for a used handgun. PM with what you got.

I don't need anything really nice, fancy, etc.

Something to train on, first gun type thing, and for self defense if needed.

I've got a Taurus PT24/7 PRO in .40 S&W I'll sell - only problem is that that a friend damaged the captive firing pin spring assembly somehow when I let him borrow it, and Taurus still has the part on backorder. It's completely functional other than the double-action mode, so essentially it's a regular single action until they send me the damn part, which costs about $3. Other than that, it's just about brand new, < 1k rounds down the tube, very slight holster wear.

I've also got a brand-new C-Tac IWB holster for it and 150 rounds of factory ammo, a couple dozen handloads and a full mag of Speer Gold Dots that I'll include too.

I'd like to get $425 for everything. You're welcome to come test drive it if you want to try before you buy.
CCW or permit required.

It's a post-ban, 15.

I also have an ass-ton of reloading stuff for .40 that can go with it. If anyone's interested in that, I'll look at all I've got and come up with a price.
