Look

I know the average TWW user is way beyond the average idiot in not being able to extrapolate meaning unless its explicitly written in big, 42 point font but dude I'll try it:

BLU RAY

IS OUTSELLING

HD DVD

BY NEARLY A 2-1 MARGIN

So all you arguing about STANDALONE HURRRR RHURRRR DURKA DURKISTAN is pretty fucking funny considering the actual market is proving you wrong every second of every day and judging from the upcoming HD DVD titles will continue to do so.

I mean I dont even want to defend this shit, but you guys are so amazingly ass-stupid that I feel compelled too.

Let me also just BLOW your mind.

Are you ready?

My prediction: In a year, your boner inducing stand alone Blu Ray player will drop below 200$

HOLY SHIT HE's A PROPHET TOO FOLKS.

The fact that it's only outselling HD DVD by a 2:1 margin is more embarassing for Blu-ray than it is for HD DVD.

looking at today's sales doesn't meant much when 95% of blu-ray sales are by PS3 owners, how dumb do you have to be to believe that's the entire movie industry market is a bunch of video game owners

you're not defending jack squat just posting numbers of current sales without looking at who's buying the shit, only making yourself look stupid

i'm unbiased and i can even tell there's a difference here

^funny you should post that, I just picked up Robocop on Blu-Ray last week

Back to the topic at hand, the writing's on the wall folks. HD-DVD had their chance when Blu-Ray players were still outrageously expensive, they should've hit hard then. Now, BD players are only going to get cheaper and we'll see Blu-Ray pull away even more this year.

And to whoever thinks Warner will be going HD-DVD exclusive, I think you've got it backwards. If you're a movie studio releasing on two formats, and your titles always sell more on one format than the other, are you really going to go 'exclusive' with the losing format???

^

That's one way to look at it, and I think it's a valid opinion. As I said earlier, Warner has stated they don't want to leave the market in the hands of gamers. I'll dig up that quote if needed, but I hope you'll take my word for it. Warner has always leaned a little red, but I agreee that that isn't a promise they are going exclusive. I think most titles released on both Blu and HD DVD by Warner usually have somewhere between a 1.2-1.5:1 ration in favor of Blu-Ray. I think Warner's willingness to cozy up to Sony and it's DRM will be a factor in deciding who they favor.

I'm very interested to see the sales/statistics for HD DVD since Christmas. I feel the race will be even tighter with the amount of players and software that was purchased.

^ Granted, a lot of the blu-ray players out there are PS3s, but let's not forget there's a HD DVD accessory for the Xbox 360 as well.

My money's on blu-ray. I haven't bought a player yet, but I really hope they win and win sooner rather than later.

once either format wins the war, wave goodbye to all the BOGO offers on movies.

I hope it goes on for a while longer (as long as Blu-Ray wins and they go back and release all the current HD-DVD exclusives on BD).

While it works seemlessly with the 360, it also works well with computers as just an external HD DVD drive.

Warner's in it to make money, and they're doing an outstanding job of it by having their new releases in both formats (you leave it up to the consumer to decide by giving them a choice, not by going exclusive). Check out this advertisement in HomeMediaMagazine, directed at retailers...

"By year's end, nearly 5 million households will own HD DVD and Blu-ray Disk players, generating close to $300 million in Hi-Def movie sales. All the best-selling titles are being released in HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs, giving your customers what they want. Carry both Blu-ray and HD DVD movies. That's the best recipe for your success."

Very strong sales by the 3rd in the Bourne trilogy, but overall Blu-ray still outsells HD DVD. The 5th Harry Potter movie was 55%/45% in favor of Blu-ray, which is also close but still favors Blu-ray. These don't include the years 1-5 giftset.

Simpsons and Superbad make small splashes. Comedies usually don't sell as well in HDM as action. Planet Earth just won't die, will it?

The Bourne movie makes me scratch my head. Funny that's the top title, but I've yet to see the movie. I have it on my Netflix queue coming up, so we will see how it is.

And yes, Planet Earth will not die.

EDIT: That announcement looks legit, bad news for HD DVD indeed. Important lesson learned, speculation is just that. I'm glad I don't gamble

I'll be interesting to see how CES unfolds with Warner speaking at the HD DVD meeting.

"WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE ITS HIGH-DEFINITION DVD TITLES
EXCLUSIVELY IN THE BLU-RAY DISC FORMAT BEGINNING LATER THIS YEAR

Decision Made in Response to Strong Consumer Preference for Format

(January 4, 2008 - Burbank, CA) - In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros.
Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the
Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry
Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner
Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a
strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give
consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-
definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We
believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for
mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most
importantly, consumers."

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format
and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray
releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end
of May 2008.

"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to
provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware
prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner
Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by
Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is
the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward
high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and
becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said
Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that
recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home
entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner
Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high
definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look
forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

thank God, we finally have one format, let's just hope we see the prices still come down.

this is for all the people that though putting blu-ray in the PS3 was a mistake, validation has finally come for sony's decision, let's just hope they don't screw us with their proprietary crap

*personally i think they gave in too early (in terms of making a decision with so few of sales), but apparently the lack-luster sales were to consumers being confused, not necessarily price or features*

^^ really the whole blu ray stems from sony forcing you to buy it, instead of giving you a choice. i commend ms for allowing me to have that choice. sony gambled and i don't like gamblers. they could still stand a small chance of losing, as it is still not over, just saying. since ms gave me a choice i can now decide what to actually buy instead of having a seem-soon-to-be-dead-format in my console, whereas altho this looks like the deal maker for sony, they still took a chance and forced people to buy it.

well honestly, sony won by not making anyone buy a blu-ray player, they just won because 60% of PS3 owners out there bought a blu-ray disc to check it out most likely

...or their plan actually worked and they got PS3 users (like myself) who NEVER used to buy movies (I own maybe 3 or 4 DVDs) to start buying Blu-Ray movies (I already own 40+ in the one year I've owned a player, and I'd own much more than that if more titles were available).

It was a smart move by Sony, I've said it all along. All you Sony haters can bitch and moan about how it was forced on people, but it was a brilliant business move. In my eyes, their only gamble was putting the system out at $600 and they LOST that bet. They had to make the biggest price cut in console history, and are taking HUGE losses on all the hardware they sell.

Seems like it might pay off after all, though, doesn't it?

^^Yeah and that's what it sounds like without inserting bizarre brand-sentiment-based rhetoric into it. Sony no more "forced" anyone to buy blu-ray than MS "robbed" people of a potential deal by not including it in the 360.

Sony banked, possibly incorrectly, on people seeing the bundle of blu-ray plus high tech gaming console as a great deal while microsoft reasoned that what gamers wanted out of a console was games and for it to be affordable- something nintendo kind of beat them at in a way. Microsoft's strategy worked in terms of victory as a gaming console and sony's strategy worked on the format war but didn't pan out so much in terms of the world of gaming. See- no BS fanboi rhetoric.
