i USED to live in that area and still go frequently to visit my family. i don't know much about what's cool/interesting around there anymore though, but i do like it & think it's a great place!

cool. Yeah it wouldn't be a bad assignment at all for me really I don't think. I'd be close to Durham and Raleigh where I have a lot of friends as well as Charlotte where I have family and still only 3 hours back to home.

It's not 100% yet but I just started thinking about it/looking into things today since I know we definitely won the project and there is a 90% chance that I will fill one of the roles there for the duration.

We're in the middle of a couple projects at home and were possibly going to start on the kitchen soon. I'd have to put them on hiatus, but on the flipside this would help pay for them too.

I am on the eastern Guilford County line, so I am like 10 miles from downtown Greensboro. But I grew up in Greensboro, so I guess I can still claim it.

^ We tried to go to Darryl's on High Point Rd Saturday night and there was a 2 hour wait, so we went to Outback. I never realized that Darryl's was that popular.

My folks went there a couple months ago and reported that it's almost completely changed concept--it's "Darryl's Wood-Fired Grill" now and the menu is nothing like they remember it being for so many years.

So I am definitely going now. I start work on this project March 4th, meaning I will be up there sometime next week (Probably March 2nd or 3rd). I'm a "planner" so this really kills me, but what usually happens with this stuff is that I will most likely be up there on expenses for a couple weeks while I am working and will have to find a place then. I would prefer to have all that worked out before I go and not live out of a hotel for the first few weeks but oh well...

I would be doing construction management for a Procter & Gamble plant. They haven't told me which location, but based on news reports it looks like it is the location on Bryan Park Rd most likely. I see they apparently have a location in East Greensboro and then the plant on Bryan Park Road. My best guess is that I would physically be working most days on site at the Bryan Park Rd location. Ideally, if anyone else from my company is going that would be a half-decent roommate, I'd love to cut costs and room with someone, otherwise I'll be by myself. If indeed I would be on that plant site in NE Greensboro, it looks like something around the Pisgah Church Rd shopping center area would be nice as far as being close to amenities...The Village Lofts look fantastic (fits my love of being able to not rely on a car for day-to-day stuff) but maybe a bit more than I wanted to spend. Affordability is not an issue, but I will most likely get an allowance for housing and thus anything not spent is pocketed so it is nice to keep costs down. However, safety and convenience come before pocketing a few extra bucks so I wouldn't rule something out above my ~$800 target price.

Any opinion on that area? Or any recommendations on any other place to stay in that general area? Trying to keep the commute to work <15 mins. If I can do that and keep downtown Greensboro within 15 mins as well that would be nice.

Most people in my situation seem to rent furnished places and I planned on that at first, but I am thinking that I could most likely bring our old futon + extra blow-up mattress, some extra barstools, and maybe pick up a sofa and chair on craigslist and be set.

The further west on Pisgah Church towards Battleground the better. East towards Yanceyville is pretty rough. There are a lot of decent places on N. Elm between Pisgah and Cone. N. Church street is a fucking warzone.

Also, I'm fairly skeptical of craigslist renting and am so used to just owning that renting in general is a bit foreign to me right now, but there are people renting rooms in that North Elm area near the shopping center. Still deciding whether that is worth pursuing once I'm up there as well.

Not sure what all you are looking for while here in Greensboro; nightlife, location, amenities, etc...


In the NE part of Greensboro there's not many choices for living. Majority of the apartments in the area are fairly sketch. I'm not sure about Village Lofts though. With NE Greensboro the way it is that might keep your commute times more than 15 minutes.


The other side of Battleground are a couple of Bell properties that are decent. We live in Brassfield and right up the road is Park Forest. Both apartments come with a washer and dryer which would be useful. The area is good and close to where you will be working at.

If you want to be close to downtown there's City View at Southside, but the one I liked was Greenway at Fisher Park. It's a really nice apartment that is within walking distance to the ball park and anything else you want to do downtown. Also downtown are the Lofts at Greensbourgh Court which could be another choice for you.

I'd say this is an accurate statement. The Pisgah Church/Lawndale area is nice, that's pretty much where I grew up. Also, there are always a lot of houses for rent in the Kirkwood area, which is a little closer to downtown off of Lawndale. Renting a house will definitely depend on your price range though, but if you find a roommate it would be a good option.

"Kirkhood" is quite a stretch, even for the houses ON Lawndale. Sure, they aren't as nice as the houses closer to Irving Park area, but they are far from hood. Calling it "Kirkhood" makes it sound like you have to duck gunshots, and I can guarantee that you don't need to worry about that from any community located across the street from a Target.

Even the Kirkwood houses on Lawndale sell in the $150s

I'm not saying this is true or not, but there may have been a house off Markland that may have grown a particular herb for medicinal use. Dellwood was always an interesting place to visit. It's not bad at all over there, just a few interesting neighbors.


Greenway is super nice, pricey, but nice. I work for the hospital off Elm and it's a place my wife and I are looking at to move. Living there would mean I can bike to work and it's also closer to her office. Not sure if the rent is worth the convenience of biking, but if gas keeps going up it will be worth it to move.

thanks to everybody who has continued to provide input. I'm not ignoring anyone; I've just been very busy tying up loose ends at work (closing out multiple projects earlier than expected now) and getting ready to get out of town. I'll be doing a lot of research starting with leads in this thread this weekend.

I found out I definitely will be on expenses the first two weeks. So during that time to find a place to live they'll just be reimbursing me and I will unfortunately be in a hotel in Reidsville. After that it will be in my best financial interest to rent a room or an apartment. I did confirm that, in addition to my salary, I am getting per diem 7 days a week, a travel stipend, and paid OT (prob working 50-60 hours a week). So , if I end up getting something myself without a roommate, I think a 1BR place with a max price in the $700-$800 range is reasonable. A safe, quiet place to crash that ~15 mins from work and ~15 mins from downtown (so I can enjoy my weekends) and near a grocery store and basic amenities is definitely what I'm looking for. I also start work at 7 so there is prob not much traffic in the morning I'd have to compete with I am hoping.

A few things suggested already definitely are on my short-list to check out when up there.

Why the fuck are they putting you in a hotel in Reidsville if your project is closer to Pisgah Church Rd in Greensboro? That is easily a 30 minute commute.

You can find this EASILY at just about any apartment complex in Greensboro. I recommend Lincoln Greene and Kennsington Place. I lived at Kennsington Place, and have had tons of friends (all hot chicks) that lived at Lincoln Greene.

Traffic is 1 thing that you pretty much NEVER have to deal with in Greensboro, unless there is an accident.

Well, the project is actually off Bryan Park rd/Summit Avenue, about 10 mins east off the Pisgah Ch/North Elm intersection. I just mentioned the Pisgah Ch area because it seemed to be the closest "nice" area near the project site based on some of my preliminary looking online. Reidsville is only 15-20 mins to the job site. However, I agree it is a terrible place to have to stay for the first 2 weeks, but when we're on expenses they're going to try and find a cheap place for us to stay. Just the way it goes unfortunately. Once I'm on per diem and I get to choose where I live I'm definitely not staying in Reidsville.

Thanks for the recommendations though. And I'm very glad to hear traffic shouldn't be an issue.

Any good recs on restaurants and bars on the east side of Gboro as well as downtown?

If you are used to living in Raleigh, forget about traffic when factoring in your commute. You can easily get from anywhere in Greensboro to anywhere else in Greensboro in 15 minutes So pick a place you want to live and don't concern yourself with how close it is to the job sight.

Yeah, no issues. Biggest advantage is plenty of back roads. If I were you, knowing what I know, I would look to rent near the north end of Battleground. It's a straight shot to downtown, and easily accessible to anywhere else in Greensboro.

ok, this is a really off-the-wall question, but are there any decent bars in the area that have foosball? I finally got my old table moved from my parents' house to ours a couple weeks before I found out I would be going to Greensboro and I've had a lot of fun playing with friends again for the first time in a long time so I'm slightly bummed to not get to play when I go up there. Random question I know, but I was just curious.

Anyway, I'll be heading up to Reidsville a week from today. The first week at work will be extremely busy, but I theoretically should have Friday-Sunday (8th-10th) off and I'm hoping I will get time to visit a few different apartment complexes that weekend because ideally I'll be able to secure something starting around the 17th or at the absolute latest the 25th. Looks like I will probably have to go month-to-month since the duration could be anywhere from 4-6+ months right now and I don't want to get burned if I go with 6mos and it ends in 3-4 or something.

Initially I was considering furnished places or renting furniture , but the more I think about it, the more I really might just go with a futon+air mattress and then just craigslist a couple cheap items (chair and side table or something).

I think I am going to look into Greenway at Fisher Park a little more. Maybe call them tomorrow. They have some 1 bedrooms showing as available and they appear to be in a pretty cool location downtown off Battleground. It's about 10 miles or 15ish minutes from the work site (assuming no traffic) it appears.

I plan to call a couple other places mentioned in here as well, but that one seemed like it could be walkable to a handful of things. I didn't see a super close grocery store though unless anyone has any that they know aren't appearing on google, but it appears there is a rumor of a small grocery store opening up directly across from the Fisher Park apartments in March which would be nice.

I know these apartments were recommended to me by a couple people on here, but any other opinions of that area? Here is a link with A being the apartments and B being our work site. It shows the route I would drive that way.

The location for doing things like bars and events can't be beat. There's a bunch of little places there to eat and visit within walking distance. Deep Roots is supposed to open in March sometime. Deep Roots is a co-op type of place. Other than that the only place close by would be the Teeter or Whole Foods at Friendly Center.

I've got no idea what they will charge you for a month-month rent. You may have some room to haggle with them. Only downside of those places is no washer and dryer included in the rooms and things like a grocery store will need a car. They do have included bike racks inside the apartment if you have a bike and want to use that downtown or on the local trails.


In NW, Brassfield and Park Forest are both good areas with some stuff close by too. Not exactly like being downtown and walking to something and passing storefront, office, storefront, ..etc. It's more like yards, strip mall, yards, strip mall. Upside is the included washer and dryer. Travel times should be fairly close though.


Seeing that you are here a limited time I'd go for downtown. I would check out the NW area though and see what they offer.

Thanks. And yeah, I am definitely still considering the Bell apartments and plan to check with them as well. The washer and dryers being included is definitely nice for this kind of assignment, but I will probably drive home every other weekend so if I get a place without a W/D I'll just bring extra clothes and bring my laundry home with me.

Right now I think my plan is to bring an air mattress and a futon mattress I have and just sleep on those. I plan to bring a couple old bar stools, side tables, a card table, and a chair that my parents have just had in storage. The only thing I'll have to figure out is a sofa. I'd like a sofa and not just a chair, but I just don't have a way to haul anything, otherwise I'd pick something up on craigslist while I'm up there. I might look to see if any furniture rental place will just rent a sofa. Or just a sofa and loveseat or something. It will be a very ghetto setup overall but oh well

Deep Roots is the place that I heard was opening, so that is nice to hear it is definitely coming in March. At least it would give me a walkable place to buy produce and eggs from if I did end up at Fisher Park.

If I remember correctly they pour the cans into cups but I've only been there twice & I don't drink. I do recall some people playing on it the first time I was there but I'm not sure they were of the state-of-mind to care if the table was playable.

just an update: I moved into Greenway at Fisher Park yesterday. Basically I dropped off a suitcase and a couple other items to empty my car after living out of a hotel this week. Came home to get items I didn't need at the hotel (towels, sheets, etc.).

Bringing up our air mattress to sleep on this week and I think my parents are bringing up their old futon tomorrow so I don't only have the air mattress to rely on for sleep. As for the rest of the apartment, I am challenging myself to furnish the entire place for <$500 and still have it look half-decent using craigslist and thrift stores. My biggest challenge will be a small sofa or loveseat

I'll check out the ReStore and continue to keep my eye on craigslist. If I find something I'll probably try and go the cargo-van route to get it home.

Goodwill is completely hit and miss. Plus they are a little wonky with their furniture prices.

Another store you might get something for cheap is Colfax Furniture or Southeastern Furniture. Sometimes they will have furniture with imperfections; small tear, bad stitch, etc. for cheap.


Once you've been at Greenway let me know how you like it. Wife and I are thinking of moving in there this summer. It's a ton closer to my work and a little bit closer to hers. We've visited a few times and really liked the layout. Only thing we/I was unsure of was how quiet in the daytime it was when I'm usually trying sleep after working 3rd.

Yeah, same for the goodwill's near us. Salvation Army where we live always has better prices. We have 3 great thrift stores right near my house in Greenville, SC that always have tons of furniture including decent sofas but that doesn't help me for Greensboro

I will definitely let you know how the apt is. I have been there 3 times during the day on weekdays so far though and it has been very quiet. (once to look, once to sign the lease, and once to "move in").

I appreciate everyone's responses in here. I really liked the North Battleground area and saw some nice apartments in that area. If I was living here permanently that seemed like a great place to be. However, based on my job-site location and wanting to be able to walk to a bunch of stuff, the downtown location seemed a little more my speed for this temporary arrangement.

I have a coworker who lives in the Greenway at Fisher Park. Shes been there almost 6 months and loves it. Says the office staff is really nice. Shes only had two issues since living there. First was a loud party in the middle of the night- but there is a number to call for a security guard or something and he took care of it right away.
Second was her power bill one month. Shes in a 1 bedroom and the bill was over $300. She called the power company and they were no help and told her it would be over 2 months till they could come out and check the meter. She told the office staff and they took care of the issue for her. (She still had to pay the bill but I think they are reimbursing her for part of it).

Been tied up at work so I haven't had time to really get around downtown too much yet. With my schedule and Easter coming up it will probably be April before I am here on the weekends more regularly to start walking to things downtown. Assuming we win tomorrow, I do plan to get to the tournament Friday though as long as I'm not working

I did drive over to the Friendly Center to get dinner at Whole Foods and get my groceries at Harris Teeter Monday night. Definitely very nice that it is an easy ~2.5 mile nearly straight shot to that shopping complex. Somehow I missed that when I was first looking at apartments. So between Deep Roots opening up, and having Harris Teeter and Whole Foods 2.5 miles away I won't have any issues with groceries like I thought I would initially
