How are you breaking in the engine? Congratulations on the successful initial startup! 6/19/2012 6:47:55 PM |
beethead All American 6513 Posts user info edit post |
basically...
1. last night - start engine, allow to reach operating temp at idle. shut off & cool completely (overnight) 2. this morning - drive 15 minutes varying 2500-4000 rpms with accelerate (staying out of boost) and engine braking. shut off and cool completely 3. this evening - drive 15 minutes varying 2500-5000 rpms with accelerate and engine braking. was seeing around 5-8psi max. shut off and cool completely
i am doing this in an industrial park that has little traffic and some hills, which helps a bit.
a couple more cycles working up the rpms and load. then change oil and start driving it daily.

Meh. My best is 33+ mpg on I-95N when traveling with a pack of cars going 80+ mph. Got 380 miles out of that tank...probably never top that AC was on too. The car's lifetime average (in my hands) is around 22-23 mpg

My friend, who does autocross and used to own a RX7, drove my 8-day old s2000 last night. Proceeded to fishtail on the highway at around 60 mph and we crashed head on with concrete (2ft deep, 3ft tall) at the same speed. Lucky to be alive but freaking out. Apparently the liability follows the car, not the driver/fault, so I'mbeing charged with 'at fault' for a totaled car. What. The. Fuuuuuck. 6/21/2012 6:51:21 PM |

I have a friend who let an "experienced autocrosser" drive his s2000 and proceeded to put it in a ditch
those cars can be quite snappy and he's not much of an autocrosser, either 6/22/2012 1:20:35 PM |

S2000s are quite snappy, and that's especially true for AP1s. Regardless, no experienced driver should pull a maneuver like this:
Quote : | "I think he just jerked the steering wheel while driving and downshifting" |
in someone else's car, at night, on his first time driving it. Which highway were you on? An S2000 doesn't have enough horsepower to overpower it's rear tires on any sort of turn you would experience on the interstate.
BTW I'm glad you're okay, let us know how the insurance payout and search for a new S2000 goes.
PS: jaZon and I thank you for increasing the value of our cars just a bit.6/22/2012 1:45:22 PM |

$200? I think
I might have to go that route if my plan doesn't work.
I think the dealer and the other two shops I've had look at it are full of shit and that I have MAYBE a few cracked valve retainers - I can fix those on my own without pulling the head...so I'll give that a shot next weekend, assuming it doesn't drop a valve in the meantime.

speaking of.. my bro recently picked up an AP2 s2000 and it felt pretty underwhelming when i drove it... acceleration isn't quite there and it seems to understeer more than i would expect an RWD roadster to.. maybe its the lack of power steering thats the problem.6/22/2012 6:00:53 PM |

Yeah, he was definitely at fault. The unfortunate thing is that the liability follows the car and the person who has insured the car, NOT the driver or the one at fault in a 1-car accident. So, it's likely going down as a totaled car on my record....even though I was in the passenger seat and warned him about the car losing traction before he got in it. This is such shit. Fuck. 6/22/2012 6:43:37 PM |

When I ask someone to drive my car I take responsibility for any mistakes they make. If someone asks me to borrow it I expect them to take responsibility for any mistakes they make.
Letting someone take it on a test drive is a bit of a grey area. I never would have expected his insurance to pick up the bill; that's definitely on you since you insure the car. I would expect him to pay the deductible and any unresolved costs after your insurance is done. If he does that consider just yourself lucky and chalk it up as a lesson that could have been a lot worse.

Partially installed Kirkey bucket seat (driver's) in my S2000. I'm still too tall for the roll bar (ever so slightly, but I'd be an idiot to take it on track without confidence in my ability to survive a rollover). FML.

New brake pads on the front of the R1200R. Installed new Speed Bleeders, which made brake fluid flush really quick and easy! I highly recommend them. Used Motul RBF600 Factory Line and EBC HH Sintered Brake Pads. These pads feel pretty solid so far, especially compared to the organic Brembo pads that were originally on there. They'll make for a good backup set since they are only half worn.
Then I cleaned her up a bit. Beautiful Black Bitch.

Is his power steering broken? The car doesn't have any issues oversteering, believe it. It's ridiculously easy to adjust the car's line when turning by lifting off the throttle or trail braking. It's obviously not a power on oversteer type of vehicle though. And driving around town is worlds different than being on the track with that car, where you spend more 95% of the time on the big VTEC cam. Makes the car feel a lot faster.6/25/2012 8:49:22 AM |
