I hate to question his effort because you never really know for sure, but Peppers probably gave us 75-80 percent his last few years here. It was pretty obvious to anyone watching, so I'm sure that played just as big a factor as his actual stats in the contract negotiations.

Ernie liked his late hit on Rodgers

(as a Panther a few years back, not referring to anything he did as a Bear)

It was a pretty impressive season for him though. No Peppers to command attention, no tackle help to speak of and Brayton on the other side. He was all alone out there and came back with 11.5 sacks.

Now, given our division quarterbacks, defensive end was probably the #1 priority here.

Hardy Johnson

^John Clayton made a good point about that, in regards to not having Peppers around, and the interior of the line was shitty

additionally, the Panthers were almost always playing from behind, so he was facing a lot of teams who were running the ball towards the end of the game, yet still notched 11.5 sacks

take it for what it's worth

Meeks' defensive schemes free the D-Ends to shoot up the field without worrying about their gaps. While his scheme is heavily reliant on quality speed-rushers, they typically great stats in his system.

Rivera will run a D that is more similar to Philly's, with blitzers coming from all over. Don't expect Johnson to get double-digit sacks again.

he's said he'll have elements of the 3-4 defense but we'll still be a 4-3 defense team, so i don't think we should expect as many blitzes as Andy Reid throws out there

hopefully he won't have double digit sacks because 5-6 different Panthers each have 7-8

seems like everyone wanted Johnson to resign, and now that he has been signed and the financials are available, everyone is hating on him

what were the Panthers supposed to do? the guy proved he can play, and better to pay him then let him go to the Falcons

I'm confused. Do you think that Philly runs a 3-4?

Trent Cole managed 10 sacks last season, along with 65 tackles, numbers quite comparable to Johnson's.

i thought so but i guess now that i think of it they just use a shitload of blitzes, its harder to get away with that in a 4-3 without a good secondary which the Panthers don't have

one thing you can say about Johnson is that he rarely if ever got a coverage sack

the Gamble situation needs to be addressed

and i'm not sold on either Godfrey or Martin

maybe a change in coaching will shine light on these players, good and bad

i'm convinced that not only is Nnamde gonna get way too much money since like 10 teams will be bidding on him, but that Jonathan Joseph is gonna get paid too much in a bidding war between all the teams that didnt get Asomugha

i dont think Gamble is the problem though, and Godfrey had a decent season last year, but i dunno about Marshall and Munnerlyn, not a huge fan of either

since UNC fans have posted back to back in a thread with 'Carolina' in the title, I feel the need to post 41-10

nothing personal, can't let you people take over TWW though

well we could go for 3 but not sure who the third would have been, I guess jctarheel and tuliplovr

and to clarify my last post, I meant a hope as in richardson might actually want to pay for a real team now not like johnson himself is going to turn things around

nah i agree with your post, in fact i think there are a number of TWWers who think Richardson is a cheap owner based solely on last year and not the franchise history

brilliant move (in hindsight) to get the #1 pick when you had a good feeling that you'd be paying him half of what St. Louis gave Bradford a year earlier...assuming Newton becomes a good NFL player

Deangelo's situation will be interesting over the next few days, as well as if they sign T Davis to a longterm deal, who we go after in free agency, whats up with Steve Smith, are we gonna bring in a veteran QB, etc

which is fine since he's also a great run defender

i think he can put up 8 a year for us on average during the contract. don't think it's impossible that he could pop double digits a couple times again, either

people forget he came out of school pretty young. there was a lot of talk that he'd be a first rounder if he went back for his senior year

Speaking of Johnson being drafted, always kind of interesting to look back and see what the "experts" were saying when he was being evaluated. Pretty spot on:

Quote :
"

2007 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia

Charles Johnson had a sensational junior year at Georgia, registering 19 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks. Johnson and teammate Quentin Moses made a dynamic combination at defensive end for Georgia. With his stock value rising, Johnson elected to forego his senior year and enter the 2007 draft.

Johnson is shorter that you would hope for a defensive end, but does have the ideal size in terms of weight (275 lbs) for a pass rushing end in the NFL. He is very solid against the run and effective closing down the running lanes and forcing the ball carrier to the inside. Johnson brings an excellent burst from the edge to get around the offensive tackle and create havoc in the backfield. He also has exceptional strength to overpower most blockers and closing speed to get to the quarterback. Johnson uses his hands well and his low center of gravity to leverage position against opposing blockers.

His inexperience, consistency and tendency to wear down late in the game are concerns to scouts. Many believe he excelled early in the season due to his teammate, Quentin Moses, drawing most of the attention from offensive blocking schemes. Some teams have discussed the possibility of moving him to outside linebacker, but that remains to be seen. Regardless of the concerns, Johnson has a ton of talent and ability to perform at the next level. Johnson made the right decision to declare for the draft and should be a mid-to-late first round pick. "

signed DT Ron Edwards

Quote :
"Yes, John Fox is gone from Carolina. But it looks like the Panthers are going back to the philosophy they followed in his early years.

They’re building around the defensive line. A day after agreeing to terms on a deal that will keep defensive end Charles Johnson with the team, the Panthers have addressed what’s been a glaring weakness in recent years. They just went out and spent some decent money on a defensive tackle in free agency.

They’ve agreed to terms with former Kansas City defensive tackle Ron Edwards, according to Adam Schefter. Edwards has agreed to a three-year deal worth $8.25 million.

Edwards is a pure run-stopper and that’s something the Panthers need. He’s never had more than four sacks in a season, but the Panthers can get those from Johnson and others. They’re bringing in Edwards, 32, to help solidify the run defense.

He’ll act as a bridge and give rookies Terrell McClain and Sione Fua some time to develop."

This sounds like what Kemo's role was for us before.

Just eat up some blocks and let the other down lineman go after it.

he's 32 which goes against the "youth movement", but i think part of the youth movement was in actuality preparing for the lockout, which resulted in cutting the contracts of more expensive veterans

Those rookie DT's need to need a vet to show them the ropes.

So we got a teacher and instant production on the line. Win/Win
