capitalism should work in a way that's compatible with the American dream.
however, it's come to our attention that it was taken from us millimeter by millimeter right under our noses. 11/9/2011 2:05:01 AM |

how so?
did govt take away the ability to spend money literally anywhere and in any fashion you want or something? are you openly ignoring the fact that socialist and communist societies take away those privileges openly and outright?11/9/2011 11:04:48 AM |

exactly. the 99% vs 1% is complete shit and is fabricated to simply get free handouts and rob and plunder success.
it's 150 million vs 150 million in 2 groups:
the part that doesn't pay any taxes includes:
20 million = lazy (EBT) 10 million = unlikeable (EBT and OWS and mentally ill) 60 million = under employed at the moment because of illness(15 mil)/ bad decisions(40 mil)/ or bad luck (5 mil) 60 million = old and can't and don't need to work or young kids
the part that does pay taxes, builds up a working society, and basically babysits the group up above:
the other 150 million americans are hard workers, good decision makers, productive at work and keep jobs, mexicans, and generally persistent in the market place.

I really hope that no one in this thread truly believes that making money is "lucky".
You do realize there are numerous ways to make $100k, almost guaranteed.
Here's a few off the top of my head.
1) Get a professional degree
2) Get a job in sales and put forth effort
3) Get a professional designation and then get a job
4) Build your own business
5) Work a moderate paying job and save your income and invest it in assets that will produce income for you (this takes longer than 1-4, but requires much less effort)
6) Become really good at something that people are willing to pay you for. This could be entertainment, teaching a skill, gambling, etc (this one is more difficult that 1-5, and isn't possible for everyone. Tough shit.)
The common factor in all of these is effort. That's really all it takes to make $100k. Luck can help determine how quickly it happens or how much you might make beyond that. But effort is a common denominator.
You don't truly believe Doctors (#1), Salesmen (#2), Accountants (#3), Zuckerberg (#4), people who live frugally (#5), and NBA players (#6) are all just lucky, do you? 11/9/2011 2:07:50 PM |

^the value of the money is worth less than it was 10 years ago.
the value of $100,000 doesn't get you as far as it did back in the day.
We need to focus on retaining the value.
i.e. pay off debts. i.e. stop printing money.

While I certainly agree with that statement of fact, at the moment $100k is certainly enough to raise a family comfortably. Also bear in mind that most of the people in 1-6 are making more (and some many times over) $100k. 11/9/2011 2:37:15 PM |

Ssly why not protest something worth protesting. All the things wrong with the world and people are fighting about distribution of wealth in the richest country in the world. Yeah. Went to lunch with a coworker who lived in France for a while. He said you can't declare bankruptcy there, have to put up several hundred thousands of dollars earnest money when starting a new business, credit card debt is unheard of, and bouncing a check will pretty much get you black balled from every bank in the country. 11/9/2011 2:55:14 PM |

All of which are subject to the dynamics of supply and demand.
Here's the unemployment rate by education level:
Here's the education level as a proportion of overall population.
Let's just pretend we lived in a magical world where we could take everyone with a high school diploma or less-- that's 44% of the population 25 and over (or 44% of 200 million) and get them professional degrees.
Well, now you have a large number of educated unemployed people because there simply aren't enough jobs to go around even if you could educate everyone. The best case scenario is that the glut of skilled workers would lead to significantly lowered salaries, but disproportionate to any increase in opportunity.
Yes, it's absolutely true that there are lots of jobs that companies cannot fill due to a lack of qualified candidates, and there's no question that this exposes a gap in our education system, but the number of available highly skilled job openings is exceeded by the number of unemployed individuals many times over.
So it's intellectually dishonest to simply dismiss the unemployed and underemployed as lazy. There's simply not enough economic activity to bring our unemployment rate down to where it was 5 years ago.

^can you name a western nation that has had slavery for the last several generations?
if you want to find some slavery, you're going to have to look in South Africa,Ethiopia,Chad, Mali,Mauritania,Sudan,Ghana, Togo, and Benin all ironically which are in africa
and i guess you think those same people sold to various countries 200 years ago would be better off there today too i suppose.
thanks for pointing out that simply having a 2 year degree or higher basically guarantees you are employed currently

Or, it's more likely that they view you working for $10/hour as being for some extenuating reason, and not as a career. Why promote you to assistant department manager for $12.50/hour when it won't be long before you leave for a job that requires your degree and pays you more?
A decade of raises at Kroger or Toys R Us probably gets you to your post-college starting salary in your chosen degree field.
