The beam from the hanger bay was "what the hell?!" moment number one for me.
#2 was the fact that the turbolasers were ejecting spent cartridges after firing.
thoughts on these two?

yeah, I'm going to continue telling myself that Vader's mechanical parts and Obi Wan's age slowed them down significantly.

its like that thing where if there really was a tunnel through the earth
when you fell through it, because of inertia when you came out the other end you would fall straight up, and land --- right back in the whole
and would fall for weeks until someone could catch you 6/2/2005 1:59:37 AM |

^^I think it makes a lot more sense to have one hangar that's somehow shielded than the trek application of having every fucking window in the ship be a hole with a force field. 6/2/2005 2:03:53 AM |

Yeah, I've never really thought about Star Destroyers having some kind of weapon like that in their dorsal bay. But then again, it does make sense seeing as how Star Destroyers are also intended to be used as planetary bombardment and siege weapons. Kinda makes me want to see a "tech readout" or something like that.
As far as the cartridges, though, I was also thinking WTF? Perhaps they weren't cartridges as such, but were instead power cells?6/2/2005 8:40:46 AM |

folks his battle scenes are normally homages to old 40s and 50s war movies

Are you guys quite sure TURBOLASERS were ejecting cartridges? Turbolasers are the giant laser mounts on the surfaces of capital ships. Still, even if they were, they were likely cartridges of the gas used to "fix" the blaster bolts. 6/2/2005 9:11:47 AM |

That's what I chalk it all up to. The Clone Gunships move like air assault helicopters, (The futuristic "slingload" was kind of cute too), and I figured they'd be exchanging broadsides like battleships of old, with Jedi boarding the ship with sabers drawn (arrrr).
There's also quite a few convenient plot devices. Those platforms in the lava allow our heroes to talk to one another during the duel--that's what I chalk it up as. I also think that while Obi-Wan's being knocked unconcious wasn't that well done, they just needed a way to get Anakin separated from Obi-Wan so that Anakin could kill Dooku and begin his descent.
A convenient plot device also powers those energy doors on Naboo when the Jedi fight Darth Maul. There's no real explanation for those that I've seen--they just allow Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to get separated so that Obi-Wan can watch helplessly while Darth Maul kills Qui-Gon. 6/2/2005 10:01:34 AM |

I've read that the casings just held fuel for the turbolaser as suggested above, or that the turbolasers were actually torpedo launchers or some sort of mass drivers.
I'm inclined to believe the latter-- there'd be absolutely no reason not to store whatever turbolasers run off of in the ship, rather than in cases.
but to touch on another point made above, turbolasers aren't necessarily the heavy turrent guns on capital ships. The relatively small point defense guns on star destroyers are also turbolasers.

The Cap ship fights were done very well I think but they were more akin to naval battles in the earlier Golden Age of sail then grand battles of the WWII.
Ships coming up broadsides and opening volley with fighter combat not being as big of a factor.
Ep V- VI centered on carrier/fighter combat exclusively almost. 6/2/2005 3:48:38 PM |
boonedocks All American 5550 Posts user info edit post |
yes, they're capital ships, but I thought the point of contention was whether guns smaller than this:
http://www.pasadenamodelers.com/SCIFIPHOTOS/turbolaser_battery.jpg
could also be considered turbolaser. 6/2/2005 4:00:24 PM |
FroshKiller All American 51911 Posts user info edit post |
Any twin-barrel, crew-operated cannon firing blaster bolts instead of ion bolts or proton torpedoes qualifies as a turbolaser. The main batteries on Star Destroyers of all classes are heavy turbolasers, but the smaller guns qualify. 6/2/2005 4:08:53 PM |

lucas originally intended for the lightsaber to be heavy enough to require two hands but his fight choreographer convinced him it wasn't a good idea.
plus he based the fights on old movies, as was already mentioned.6/2/2005 10:15:05 PM |

Anyone know where i can find conceptual sketches of the original star wars movies? I remember seeing early drawing of darth vader, C3PO, chewbacca, etc. and they looked alot different.. I'd like to see how the ideas evolved to the final product.
Anyone know where i can find these? (either online or in a book you can recommend)
thanks 6/2/2005 10:21:22 PM |

Ralph McQuarrie did most of the conceptual art for the original trilogy. The "Star Wars" section of his webpage has a lot of good examples of his work.

The fight in Episode 4 is a tad weak, but I think the saber battles in 5 and 6 match anything in the prequels. It's obviously a different style, but just as enjoyable in my opinion. 6/3/2005 2:22:55 AM |

i'd like to point out that obi-wan is a lot older in episode 4 and hardly as nimble as he used to be
also, anakin isn't even walking on his own legs anymore. you can't expect a geriatric or a cripple to be doing backflips and shit
shit.. i think this has already been pointed out

I think the Sabre fights in 3 were the best of the series but they were broken down into segments and didn't seem as protracted and epic as the Father-Son showdowns in 5 and 6.
I wish CGI was improved enough for a long emperor vs yoda sabre fight. 6/3/2005 9:32:06 AM |

I think that force lightning blast from palpatine knocked some screws loose in yoda's head. From that point on started to act all goofy--
i.e. rummaging headfirst through luke's stuff, stealing his candy bar, wacking r2-d2 with his cane when he starts playing with that little flashlight. 6/3/2005 3:02:42 PM |

yes, "obi-wan is a lot older in episode 4 and hardly as nimble as he used to be", but should he have been? he was aprox 25 in episode 1, so 35 in episode 2, and maybe 40 in episode 3, and then just 60 in episode 4. 60 isn't that old. in the script for episode 1, qui-gon is supposed to be near 60 and we all saw how well he could move.... just a thought. 6/3/2005 6:00:04 PM |

Not to mention that we saw a 60-year-old man and an 70-80 year old man leap around like it was nothing in Episode III. Episode IV's lightsaber fight is a victim of a much lower budget and the technology at the time.
I just saw it a third time (as part of free event at my job) and I think seeing Padme die and then immediately switching over Darth Vader rising in his new suit is one of the most moving images in the saga. 6/3/2005 6:08:34 PM |
