The show is called "Lost" because it's not the people who are stranded who are lost, it's the viewers!

Basically the point of the show is to throw in randomly determined twists (delivered on the back of a lucky carrier pigeon) to keep the viewer in a perpetual cycle of being lost.

the middle section had at least 3 people (Boone, Scott/Steve, and the teacher) die without having the disease. Since only two characters from this group have been introduced, and only in the last episode, you really can't make an educated guess as to what happened to them.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the first verse:

"I like to dream
Yes, yes right between the sound machine"

Obviously talking about Desmond's plight to get some sleep between alarms

"On a cloud of sight I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here"

Helloooooooo...black smoke anyone?

Damn amazing stuff you guys got here

ALRIGHT PEOPLE - WE NEED A CHARACTER CHECK!

There are groups of people on the island we have broken into three catagories:

Philos0phers

Writers

Thieves (which have ties to the writers as well in the form of playwrights or novel characters)

PHILOSOPHERS:

Rousseau - Rousseau saw a fundamental divide between society and human nature. Rousseau contended that man was good by nature, a "noble savage" when in the state of nature (the state of all the "other animals", and the condition humankind was in before the creation of civilization and society), but is corrupted by society. He viewed society as artificial and held that the development of society, especially the growth of social interdependence, has been inimical to the well-being of human beings. In 1754, Rousseau returned to Geneva, where he reconverted to Calvinism and regained his official Genevan citizenship. In 1755 Rousseau completed his second major work, the Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men. Beginning with this piece, Rousseau's work found him increasingly in disfavor with the French government.

This brings us to Calvin - Desmonds partner in the "Skinner Box":

CALVIN - John Calvin (July 10, 1509 – May 27, 1564) was a prominent Christian theologian during the Protestant Reformation and is the namesake of the system of Christian theology called Calvinism. Calvin view is that it is thought that this reflects the young male character's belief in predestination (as justification for his behavior).

Which Brings us to John Locke (the philosopher and character):

Locke - John Locke (August 29, 1632 – October 28, 1704) was a 17th-century English philosopher concerned primarily with society and epistemology. Locke's notions of a "government with the consent of the governed" and people's natural rights—life, liberty, and property—had an enormous influence on the development of political philosophy. His ideas, which formed the basis for the concepts used in American law and government, allowing the colonists to justify revolution, are often contrasted with his practice of investing in the English slave-trade. Locke's epistemology and philosophy of mind also had a great deal of significant influence well into the Enlightenment period. Locke exercised a profound influence on subsequent philosophy and politics. His remarks concerning liberty and the social contract later influenced the written works of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other Founding Fathers of the United States. In particular, the Declaration of Independence drew upon many 18th century political ideas, derived from the works of Locke. See the John Locke Foundation for more...

SO - Rousseau wrote the SOCIAL CONTRACT and JOHN LOCKE completes the organic nature of my thinking.....

WRITERS:

Walt - Walt Whitman American Poet and Philospher/Humanist

Kate Austen - duhhh!

Hugo (Hurley) - Victor Hugo. Also, Hugo is a masculine name. It is a latinized form of the name Hugh, a German/Teutonic name meaning "Bright in Mind and Spirit".

Hugo - also short for the human genome project!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIEVES:

Jack Sheppard - A carpenter's son, John Sheppard (better known in life as Jack Sheppard, even 'Gentleman Jack' or 'Jack the Lad') was born in London's Spitalfields area in 1702. Although his father died while Sheppard was young and the boy spent time in a workhouse, he entered into the same trade as his father, but he fell into bad company and began to augment his day-to-day earnings with the proceeds of a series of break-ins and thefts. His life was turned into a play.

SAWYER (or James Ford) - Tom Sawyer...a boy dreamer and drifter. THIS MAKES MORE SENSE: James Ford was an American civic leader and business owner in southern Illinois at the turn of the 19th century. Despite his clean public image, he was also secretly a river pirate and the leader of a gang that would come to be known as "Ford's Ferry Gang". His gang was the river equivalent of highway robbers; they would hijack ferries and flatboats with tradable goods from local farms coming down the Ohio River. At one point, they used the "Cave-in-Rock" as their headquarters, on the Illinois side of the lower Ohio River, which is about 85 miles below Evansville, Indiana. Both characters have ties to "river running"

ALSO,

Claire Rutherford - is the name of two great British scientists (Nuclear Physics and Chemistry)

Boone - Daniel Boone?

Dr. Christian Sheppard - hmmm, interesting?
