bulls eye is discipline.

you could find a trend and channel any combination of those stocks, or be diversified enough to not be bothered.

i try to find momentum, kind of like surfing a wave. sometimes i get wiped out for catching the wave at the wrong time.

i'm still deep in this. a little over 300 shares between me and my dad's account. just sold some of what i had bought for my mom.

might not hurt to get out some of what you made (maybe $500 from that 1 grand you saw today), and let the rest ride. a small bird in hand will help you sleep easier.

i've got a sort of a non-option reverse straddle on this -- i got limit order to buy at 53 and a limit to sell at 60. its $1k in value first, which ever comes first wil go through.

i do think this will go higher in the coming weeks, and there is a floor on how low it can go because of the several months of lock up that insiders are bound to.

Does anybody play the "Its hurricane season, load up on energy/oil/natural gas stock"
Well I'm not sure what sector benfits the most from a storm but it seems people in BEXP (Brigham Exploration) and RIG are looking forward to a storm.

I'm kinda opposed to making money off the destruction of a hurricane, but hey, money is money.

^^ word, I may end up doing that.

^ The stock market is unpredictable enough as it is, but to combine that with another unpredictable thing like hurricanes is too crazy for me.

I thought that the general trend was to pick up stocks like HD and LOW

They basically put together a solid portfolio and then write covered calls on their positions. The performance is mostly flat, but it pays a 10% dividend. Its a good fund in the long run especially because of the low taxes on dividends now.

http://www.eatonvance.com/mutual_funds/fund_info_closed.asp?fund=ETV&h=3

and its undervalued like crazy now:

NAV 8/14/2007 $ 18.64
Market 8/14/2007 $ 17.85

I also have some ETW, which is basically the same thing but it utilizes international stocks.

It's been an interesting month, anyway. A week or so ago when everyone was screaming bloody murder about the subprime mortgages I was doing great. Too great, apparently, because now I'm getting a little of the ol' rapage myself.

I'm not really concerned about it in the long run but I'm pissed off that on the very same day I got everything ready for me to start trading my one and only stock (part of which was going to get sold off to finance other ventures) decided to take a little bath. So now I get to wait until ... it's done drying off, or whatever the logical conclusion to that metaphor is.

the best thing about VMWare is that it made me sell a nuch of crap to free up cash, and then gave me 10%+ returns when the rest of the market is down.

i was anticipating a BIDU like performance on the IPO, but i'll take this for now.

Just FYI:

"my advice

get out of the stock market, get out of all debts, use your dollars to invest/buy things of actual value before the dollar completely collapses

invest in guns, ammo, a storable food supply, an emergency water supply, water purifiers/filters"

He's not completely wrong if the US keeps up with the foreign policy, Immigration policy, and the spending policy.

Of course, only intelligent people would understand that all those predictions are for the long term, not tomorrow.

i've always hated that phrase "at the end of the day..."

i mean, come on, are you living your life just to break even or do you want a positive karmic balance?

...nevermind.

ok, i think we're near bottom. either that, or we're in for a real calamity. ...maybe this last shoe needs to drop:

http://bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aVx_kBcPExEc&refer=home

i'll be building positions within this week and the next, as i start to some take profits on the large VMWare positions i have.

i'm going with the same theme as May 2006 (see 2006 stock thread).

i like some combination of the following (with an inclination towards the first 5 on that list):

ADRE
QQQQ
EWZ
FXI
IFN
RSX
FXY
UNG
XLE
DIG
XME
HHD
HHV
EWY
EWO
EWT
EWA
EWW
ILF
UVG
VWO
UCR
IAU
SLV
GEX

names like Bankof AMerica and Citigroup are doing better today, there's more treasury buying, and the materials & commodities are getting hammered. this feels like the beginning of the end of the correction.

look at this pic and think of it in sort of a micro-cycle:

check out the double bottom in Feb/March, and the triple bottom/stairs downward last May.

feels like we're either forming a double bottom or the secong step down out of three now.

myopic move imo.

sru, did you watch VMW pre-market?

I nearly had a heart attack. it was $49 and change and i checked again a minute ago and it was 59 and some change.

I think I may cut and run today. With the interest cut, we'll probably see a nice spike, and then sayonara.

I'll probably cash out of VMW and NUAN. I'm pot committed with TRID, and I think MDR is relatively recession proof (dependent in part, on oil prices)

Do people on here handle their own accounts or do they just have a broker handle everything?

I have a 401(k) through my company, but was thinking of opening an IRA.

I wouldn't use a broker unless you have 50K+ to invest. If you just want to start an IRA go ahead and open a scottrade/vanguard/fidelity/etc account and get a nice index or target retirement fund.

Thanks.

I have Vanguard with my 401(k) and they seem to work pretty well. Thing is that's whole funds and not individual stuff that I think will appreciate well long-term.
