I think turbo motors use a bit more, but I've always been told that up to 1 quart consumption over 1000 miles is acceptable for automakers, i.e. they won't fix an engine under warranty unless you burn more. Kinda freaky though

Yeah it's pretty typical. The flat motors get a lot of oil where you may not want it.

Just changed the sparkle plugs and wires, added some air to tires.
Power window is still broken.

^^ Not sure yet - as I wasnt driving when the car was totaled, she said it would be less than if I were driving (but I'm not sure whether that means 5% less or 75% less).

So, since I have to pull the head on the s2000 anyway, what's some other relatively cheap shit I should do while im in there?

Should probably replace the headgasket while you're in there... Why're you pulling it off?

I've burned through yet another SET of tires on the 996 since it's long hibernation about 2 months and 4k miles ago. Flawless so far except it is really prone to 4 wheel drifts.

^hah, nice! I need to get another set of Direzzas for the S2000. I think I can hold out till around Labor Day weekend and maybe take advantage of a sale. 23,000 miles and 2 wknd track events seems like a pretty good performance for these tires.

The on board computer (OBC) display on the M3 I just picked up wasn't displaying most of the pixels. I found a how-to on the web about how to take it apart and replace a plastic strip that presses the ribbon cable for the display onto the circuit board that fixes that problem sometimes. I tried it, and it worked, pretty cool since a refurbished OBC costs like $300

Now I can see what it's whining about when the "Check Control" light comes on. So far, I've seen "Check Coolant" (coolant is fine, bad sensor apparently, easy to replace) and "Brake Circuit Failure" which is apparently usually due to a bad brake switch. The brake one went away before I could replace the switch though, although it probably wouldn't hurt to swap it out anyways since it's only a $25 part.

so, uhh, since i've never done this before

when they resurface the head on the s2k, will I have to do anything special to fix the timing or should any timing issues be negligible?

Sounds like my S2k experience. I never over-revved it and I really don't think the few other people who drove it during my ownership did. I suspect it happened before I bought the car as I had only put about 9k on it, but I really don't know. I got a misfire on cylinder 3 as a result of carbon buildup around the bent valve. Seemed to run fine aside from a rough idle after the CEL came on. Should have pulled compression numbers before buying the car.

I drove it today - holy shit, it went downhill fast, or the fucked valve is causing it to not like the heat. The idle was ROUGH and there was a noticeable lack of power throughout the rpm range...and, after it warmed up, it was miserable - I wouldn't have been surprised if it had blown on me. lol

Did a coolant flush on my F150 . . . . and then the water pump started pouring out water. Must have dislodged all the crud that was keeping it sealed up, the system poured out brown crap for a good 5-6 minutes with the hose attached. Replaced the pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, and heater hoses.

Then my entire damned windshield came off. Looks like it was replaced at some point and not glued in properly, and all the heat lately was too much. Had to have the windshield guys come out and redo it all.

I just ordered splash guards, all weather floor mats, and trunk mats.

I want to get it professionally waxed/sealed, want to get a spoiler/wing not the crazy one but just a little something extra added. Maybe the little bumpers to prevent hitting other doors.

Stock rears. Altima what year is bigger? I hear q45's up front don't destroy the braking bias

Yeah, I considered it. GC Coilover set with springs and Konis is like $1100, not really any more expensive than refurbishing the stock suspension, although most people also seem to recommend $400 camber plates on the front with coilovers. However, I've never done anything more complex than changing oil on a car, so I'm keeping this job as simple as possible for now. I'm learning a lot, but I'll fully admit I'm a total noob when it comes to car maintenance.

Shoot, it's a '97 E36 coupe, so exciting for a track car but nothing radical. There's a pic in the BMW thread although I've removed some of the tint since then.

non-turbo Z31 rear caliper brackets (the bracket that attaches the caliper to the upright), '03 Altima rear rotor, and your stock S13 caliper/pads.

^ that's what i'm running out back. super easy to install, you don't even have to bleed your brakes. basically the bracket spaces the caliper away from the hub for more braking leverage, and the Altima rotor is larger in diameter to fit perfectly in the caliper again.

i'm also using q45 fronts. direct bolt-on. Q45 rotors, Q45 calipers, Q45 pads. your stock brake line still fits right where it should. this one is also very easy to install.

oh, i should also note: aren't you 4 lug? Q45 fronts and Altima rears are both 5 lug. either redrill the rotors for 4 lug, or get 5 lug hubs. orrrr just get 5 lug rear hubs, and redrill your stock front hubs to 5lug like a BOSS

old write-up, still applicable for S13s.

Out of curiosity what diameter are those rotors? And I'm guessing the rears aren't vented.
