I don't understand the concept of a penalty kick in soccer. They are giving the offensive player a better socring chance (PK) than what actually would have happened even if there was no "penalty." In basketball you get two free throws, which is much more difficult than a layup (or shot in the paint), and in hockey, you basically get a re-do with a penalty shot, meaning it's the same scenario (one on one with goalie). Why do the rules state that your chances of scoring should be better with a foul (inside the box)?

so far ghana has had 2 fake falls and have gotten the calls BOTH times (one leading to a penalty kick). I hate how that is part of the culture of soccer.

^^i dont know, there are certainly many times where i disagree with PKs.. in many scenarios they should just make it a free kick inside the box, unless there was a clear shooting chance denied

many times someone will be taken down who is about to run out of bounds or lose the ball out of bounds, and a pk will be called, thats one of the worst times to see a pk given

soccer, although i played for 14 years is very hard to watch. I love the game, but the world cup has turned into a bunch of grown men who are athleticly in superb top notch shape, flop and get rewarded for falling every single time. The refs continue to give it too them and therefore they continue to act like pusses and it drives me crazy. They really need to evaluate it after this world cup and implement/enforce some rules for "flopping."

Reffing is just a thankless job. FIFA told them to punish bad tackles and hacks and they are, and now everyone hates them for it.

If I was a player and I heard FIFA say "refs need to lighten up on players" I would start hacking the crap out of everybody, cause I know they're not gonna punish it.

^^^ A yellow card for diving is needed. Can you imagine the reaction when someone gets legitimately taken down in the box though and a card is given to him cause the ref thought he dove though?

punish bad tackles? theyve always done that, punishing flops needs to be done, its not hard to spot a flop, no one needs to roll on the ground 40 times after a light tackle

they do card for diving...its pretty hard to determine if a player dives when not watching replays on a tv though...its a hard call for refs to make

Not necessarily. Penalty shots are awarded for more things than hauling down a guy on a breakaway, including throwing a stick during an obvious scoring chance or a non-goaltender closing a hand on the puck in the crease.

^^^ exactly, so how can someone from 20 yards away behind a player determine if a player dives?

It's like the Canes' non-goal that should've counted the other night. "Our production crew made this image in 12 minutes, you can clearly see the puck is in goal." Refs cannot take 12 minutes to make a call, they have 2 seconds tops. And soccer would become basketball if play was stopped every 30 seconds for every time someone fell to the ground.

The best way is to get rid of replay so fans at home will always have the same time to make a decision as a ref. That'll never happen, so...
