Is there a shortcut for "Windows XP Mode" in there? If not, is anything in there?

Worst case scenario, I suppose you could always re-download the WinXP mode image from MS, no?

I had some really weird issues with installing Win7, though once I actually got it installed it's running like a champ.

Downloaded the ISO on my HTPC and tried to use the Win7 Bootable USB/DVD Tool to make a bootable DVD, but it didn't detect my DVD burner. Then used the tool to turn the ISO into a bootable USB key.

Tried booting my computer up using the USB key, which it refused to do (turns out my BIOS is finnicky about boot order despite devices being disabled.) Tried burning the DVD again by streaming it to another computer with a DVD burner, which worked. Started running the install, only to have it say it "couldn't install/copy files" to my Raptor. Restarted, figured out how to get it to boot from USB, and away it went. About 20 minutes later I was up and running.

2.) download & install xp mode
3.) restart
4.) download & install windows virtualization
5.) restart
6.) open xp mode, setup runs, etc.

So I've got windows 7 RC as a VM on my MBP (which i'm about to delete and replace with a boot camp partition in Parallels)...I've finally got a retail disc so I was going to install it on a boot camp partition first and let parallels run off of that. What size partition on the smaller end of the scale do you think I should go with?

^yeah, Win7 seems to like about 16gb to itself for the long term (for system restore, previous versioning, indexing, et al). On install it sits at like 4gb for me, and my VM is about 9gb with everything I need installed on it, so plenty of room for growth.

Quicken 2009 is exactly like that (or it was, idk about now, they updated it). You could still install it in compatibility mode and it worked fine, it just wasn't supported and had a hard check on the OS version during the install.

I'm kinda late to the game on this, but I've got my upgrade dvd sitting across the room right now. My only concern is the graphics driver on my desktop. It's the ATI Mobility x1700, which receives zero official support from ATI/AMD.

The current driver for it is the old Vista driver Asus whipped up a few years ago, and the alternative is to use modded 9.3 catalyst drivers.

If I use the upgrade dvd will the modded drivers work (assuming I get them installed correctly)? Would it be better to just keep the old drivers and cross my fingers that they'll also work in Win7?

there are too many pages to go through here, so i will ask my question anyway. if it's been addressed, tell me and i'll search back through to find it.

we have 5 computers to upgrade to 7 64bit. they still use autocad 2007, which isn't supported in vista or 7, so i'm thinking we can use the XP mode to run it. the catch is that i have to uninstall autocad first in order to upgrade to 7 (all comps going from vista 64 to 7 64). i think we'll end up just having to pick one to use as a guinea pig. we have had problems with porting autocad 2007 licenses from the old computers to the new so that's the part i'm worried about. anybody dealt with 7 and autocad editions prior to 2008?

if it wasn't supported for Vista, yet you installed it on Vista, i don't for-see any different scenario when upgrading to Windows 7. i assume you are on stand-alone licensing? if so, i don't see any issues with it, what do you mean "porting" licenses? i don't think that's the right term.

uninstall, upgrade to W7, install & use xp mode

ah, just read 2007... so third statement may not hold true. btw, UPGRADE AUTOCAD, lol.

thirdly, I believe 64 bit autocad will work on 64 bit W7 (from looking around/asking). I'm about to find out though (for autocad 2008).

i already know there are compatibility issues with autocad 2007 (from running the compatibility thingy). we are phasing out autocad and have moved to revit, but we still have to go back to it for some of our older but still active projects. we're not upgrading autocad for that reason. for this same reason we do not have a 64bit edition of autocad.

by license porting, i mean using the Portable License Utility (for autocad, not windows). you have to use it to move/transfer the license from one computer to another, or after reformatting, or uninstalling.

our 7 discs are upgrades, so i'm not sure if we can do reinstalls. plus, there is a SHIT TON of setup involved in reinstalling an os on 6* computers here (work, not home). we just bought them a few weeks ago and went through all the moving info & reinstalling crap. we're not looking to do that again. is there a good reason we should reinstall instead of upgrade?

*the number changed from 5 to 6 because my computer has autocad 2010. i don't have any of these problems, but if i was to reinstall 7 i would have the setting up/moving info issues too.

Okay, I went back, re-read page 30, traced my steps and clearly missed the link for PRO. I have sent a message to Digital River that I fully expect to not hear back on.

I ran into a nice quirk last night. I uninstalled a game but there was still a link in the Games Explorer. The icon blanked out (because the game was uninstalled) and the link moved under a new heading "Unrecognized Games" IIRC. So of course they don't allow you to delete the links in Game Explorer.

I tried removing any leftover Start menu shortcuts. No luck. The Delete option was grayed out from the options menu at the top and the right-click menu wouldn't appear for that particular link. Couldn't press the Delete key, Shift + Delete, anything. I finally got rid of it by accident. I was trying to drag the icon to the recycle bin, which just showed the action not allowed icon. I ended up dropping it to the desktop which created a shortcut. The link in Games Explorer went away when I deleted the desktop shortcut. No idea why.

What a PITA. I guess there is a good reason for not allowing people to delete or edit things that appear in the Games Explorer that I just don't know about. I was prepped to have to comb through the registry just to delete a friggin shortcut.
