it could be an atlas sound album aside from maybe a couple tracks.

^I disagree. I think it's a pretty signature Deerhunter record.

right on. i just feel like it has a lot more of the bradford cox bedroom pop sound on most of the songs. and that's definitely a good thing.

i agree that it sounds exactly like deerhunter

^ i haven't heard it yet, so i'm just basing my comment on what all the reviews i've read have said. i'll definitely reserve judgement until i hear it for myself.

with that said, i don't think atlas sound and deerhunter are terribly different anyway

apparently there's a new smashing pumpkins single out, but i'll have to wait til i get home to see how obnoxiously shitty it is. and i guess billy corgan got some band comprised entirely of 12-14 year old girls to open at their last couple of shows on the current tour. i think at this point he's just trolling everyone.

this new pumpkins song, 'spangled', isn't great, but it's certainly better than some of the songs released thus far for this project.

yeah i just listened to it. it's not that bad, but billy seriously needs to stop putting his vocals front and center on all these new songs because it sounds fucking terrible. even though he's never really had a good voice, i kind of like the way it sounds all the way up to machina. the music structure on "spangled" is nice i think, but unfortunately it'd sound best without the vocals or lyrics. but this song and the one before it have been decent enough in the way that they aren't laughably awful like the first few.

^^i think "freak" is clearly the best of all these internet released material. yeah, he is definitely putting his vocals way too loud in the mix though. i think it's still pretty early to decide if this whole thing is a success or failure.

Question: How is everyone ignoring the fact that Sharon Van Etten's "Don't Do It" sounds a lot like the Cranberries "Linger"? I like her new album Epic okay (a bit generic), but that song bugs the shit out of me. On a positive note, I've been listening to "One Day" non-stop

I wouldn't say Way To Normal was fucking awful. I can't stand "Dr. Yang" or "Free Coffee" but the album is still decent.

so, forgive my ignorance, but why is Sledge so crucial to your enjoyment/lack thereof of Ben Folds' music? I know he was part of BFF, but was he heavily involved in the songwriting then, or were you just a big fan of what he added musically?

had heard good things about this Aloe Blacc album, but aside from that "I Need a Dollar" track, it is really stale and dull. it's all been done a million times before, and much better.

I tried to give the new Ben Folds a chance, but should have known better. You know when an album starts out with a song attempting to make fun of bloggers who justifiably hate his modern output, you're in trouble. But by the time it got to an ode to Bristol Palin's baby daddy...I was ready to take a power drill to my right temple, Pi style.

^Wait, is that the sort of thing Ben Folds does? That's even shittier than I had thought after hearing assorted bits and pieces of it -- I figured his music was just boring and unimaginative. I suppose I'm glad to have never really bothered with it.

1. He didn't write the album, Nick Hornby did.
2. "Levi Johnston's Blues" isn't an ode to him.
3. Listen to "Claire's Ninth" and "Password" in my mind, those are the highlights of the album.

after putting in a solid 10-15 listens of this album now, i will retract my earlier statement. this could be the best album they've put out. "desire lines" is amazing.

^ yeh, it's fucking great. probably my favorite album of the year

regarding the similarities between atlas sound and this album, i think the song 'sheila' on atlas sound's logos foreshadowed the sound of halcyon digest

"I Walked" is a great fucking song. One of his best, actually.

But, yeah, I'm a little shocked by it. I was expecting something more along the lines of the EP, and ended up with some Panda Bearish stuff.

Ran across two album reviews this week that compared a band's sound to my band. That was almost cooler than reading anything written about my band.

It was pretty strange to see someone say "A soaring, Called To Arms-style guitar solo" in one review and in another review on a completely separate site: "The riffs in this song are most reminiscent of Between The Buried and Me or possibly another prized album of the year, Peril and The Patient by Called To Arms."

i've listened to it, and i don't find the songwriting compelling at all

they remind me of sahara hotnights, in that they're a decent-sounding nondescript girl band who don't stand out at all for me
