5 points out 8th with 9 games left. If they can win at least 7 of those, they have a real shot.

Washington's remaining schedule:

Detroit
Philadelphia
Winnipeg
Minnesota
Buffalo
Boston
Montreal
Tampa Bay
Florida
NY Rangers

Carolina's remaining schedule:

Florida
Columbus
Detroit
Toronto
Winnipeg
New Jersey
Ottawa
Montreal
Florida

We have 1 more GP than them so these wins really count.

Just for fun...

Assuming 8 wins is the magic number (7 would be fair if there weren't three teams to pass...)

Florida - gotta be due to win one, and we've been playing well at home.
Columbus - don't they suck pretty hard? Feeling good about this one.
Detroit - Second part of a back-to-back against a good team on the road, here's the L
Toronto - Bounce back, gotta win scenario, can probably pull it out.
Winnipeg - I can sense a let down here. Maybe squeeze out a point.
New Jersey - Never do know, but it is at home. W.
Ottawa - Will have to hope Ottawa is resting players, playing backup. If so, W, if not, L
Montreal - Oh come on. Home finale, Montrelol, this is a W I'd hope.
Florida - Oh goody, it could come down to it against Florida. Avenge 2008? I'd be shocked, but again, maybe they'll have the division wrapped up. We'll see, but my guess is a crushing OTL.

My prediction is then 6-2-1, maybe 6-1-2. That's probably good for 9th.

Other way to look at it: with 9 games to go last year, the thought was "The canes need to win every game left." I don't think the sentiment is different at all right now.

In short: I would love to be wrong, but I still don't see this happening. Should be more fun to watch though!

Why did they have to hire freaking Mo. What a wasted season. This team was obviously good enough to make the playoffs if they hadn't dug such a deep hole with his dumbass.

5 points in 8 games. Ugh. Going to be tough, we need a lot of help and probably at least 7 wins.

We have the tiebreaker over both teams right?

10 e-points to anyone that can find a wider picture of the teams staring each other down. I'd wish I'd thought to take a picture, both teams in the center of the ice like that was AWESOME.

Eric Staal's Impressive Season

EDIT: This thread isn't intended to bash Claude Giroux, but to highlight Staal's greatness. I picked Giroux because he was leading the NHL in assists at the time I started writing the post.

Eric Staal has 45 assists in 76 games.

His assists are on goals by:

Tlusty (6)
Faulk (5)
Brent (5)
Skinner (5)
Harrison (4)
LaRose (3)
Stewart (3)
Jokinen (2)
Dwyer (2)
Samson (2)
Allen (1)
Poni (1)
Dalpe (1)
Sutter (1)
McBain (1)
Spacek (1)
Joslin (1)
Ruutu (1)

To calculate the average goals scored by each individual player, we'd multiply each goal scorer's season total by the number of time Staal assisted on a goal by them (for example, Tlusty would count six different times as a 17 goal scorer, while Ruutu would count once as a 17 goal scorer, etc), then divide that number by Staal's assist total. We wind up with an average of 11.2 goals.

Now, let's compare this to HF sensation and NHL assist leader Claude Giroux (note: Henrik Sedin passed Claude Giroux in assists while I was typing this post):

Hartnell (21)
Jagr (10)
Simmonds (10)
Read (4)
Timonen (4)
Van Riemsdyk (3)
Meszaros (1)
Gustafsson (1)
Voracek (1)
Couturier (1)
Schenn (1)

If we apply the same formula to Giroux's assists, we wind up with an average of 22.7 goals scored by those players.

11.2 average goals by Staal's teammates divided by 22.7 average goals by Giroux's teammates = .49

Staal has scored 76% as many assists as Giroux while playing with 49% of the talent.

Adjusting Giroux's assist total to Staal's situation, Giroux would have 29 assists if he was on the Hurricanes, while Staal would have 91 assists if he were on the Flyers.

Calculating the difference in the playmaking quality of their linemates would be too exhausting of a process, but let's assume that the playmaking talent disparity between their teammates is equal to the goalscoring disparity.

We wind up with the following results:

ADJUSTED POINT TOTALS

Giroux - 13 goals, 29 assists, 42 points
Staal - 46 goals, 91 assists, 137 points

League scoring is currently at 5.44 goals per game. During Wayne Gretzky's 215 point season, league scoring was at 7.94 goals per game. If we were to adjust Staal's Giroux-adjusted point totals to that season, we'd wind up with Staal having 200 points.

So, Staal is on pace to have one of the top five adjusted Claude Giroux-adjusted statistical seasons in history.

thats not TOTALLY inaccurate logic but it's a little off.

Staal has definitely been impaired by his linemates no question. That's a common Maurice error. "Let's have four totally balanced lines that all suck at scoring" instead of let's have 1-2 lines that can score and 2 that definitely can't.

But you can't just take the leading assist man in the league and contrast him with an underachieving player. There's no control variable here. You must at least use the entire league and you probably need a few seasons of data before you begin to pretend this is science.

No more of the random untelevised games starting in 2013-14. So basically only one more year of random blackouts.

I'll be perfectly honest, I was hoping for more from the Canes tonight. They had ZERO emotion other than Skinnerpants taking that run on Volchenkov in the first. No fights, no throwing bodies, nothing. I love solid Devils' wins and while this one had the look of a perfect game for them, it was almost like they were playing against a minor league team. Not even I like kicking the gimpy kid while they're down in the fetal position (Unless it's the Slugs, Goon Flyers, Rags, Penguins and/or Dead Wings )

I wish the refs would have let Allen take Neil's head off. Or at least let him try. To Neil's defense, I thought the hit on Staal was OK because Staal mishandled the pass. If he had handled it, Neil would have saved a point blank chance with that hit. His hit on Ruutu was also OK I believe. I thought it was more along the lines of charging than interference. However, he was out there looking for big hits and not playing the rest of the game. He came across the ice on both hits.

The Foligno hit on Tlusty was uncalled for, and I think it should be a suspension or a fine at a minimum.

I thought both Neil hits were great clean hockey hits. Not that I still don't want someone to knock his block off, but nothing wrong with the hits.

Hit on Staal was borderline, but ok. Great hit on Ruutu. You make a run at either of them, though, you should have the balls to drop the gloves.

I would love to play spoiler to FLA, especially after the golf swing shenannigans from last game.

Florida have lost 4 in a row, in their last 10 are 3-2-5 (or 3 wins, 7 losses, but still they have 11 points from it). They have a goal differential of -25 for the year. Their full-season record is 37-25-18, or combining the two last numbers for total losses, they've won 37 and lost 43. They've gone to 17 shootouts and have gone 6-11 in them. The shootout does not exist in the playoffs, so once you treat those games as "ties" since in the playoffs they would be undetermined contests, they have a record of 31-32-17. They tied for 6th with Ottawa in the East on points, but will get a 3rd seed and the 6th seed they play in the first round will have more points than them.

And this sh*t team is going to win the Southeast. That's what really annoys me about the Hurricanes' season.

Also, the state of the Southeast Division means no one can complain again about how the 4-division structure we were once going to was unfair in determining playoff teams.

Just Got Back From The Game.

it was pretty exciting for Staal to win the last home-game on a penalty shot, even though it was meaningless. and there were lots of highly make-upped skanks.

Exciting game to go to. Great crowd. Hopefully there's actually carry over to next season on the momentum.

Here's to hoping for something better than 313's Row L for all of next season! Hopefully something in 308 or 320 and many rows closer.

We've made another un-JR like move. First the mid season contract negotiations, now this. Jeremy Welsh, an undrafted college free agent prospect with a lot of buzz, was signed. He will play in the game tomorrow night. Think Matt Read of Philadelphia for a comparison.

our pick isn't set yet, there is still the lottery to consider

i'm not 100% sure, but we could either get the 3, 8, or 9 picks depending on how the lottery goes.

But yeah, better hope there's another Jeff Skinner hanging around outside the top 5 this year.

I do really think it's the inability to develop prospects that make us mediocre every year, especially with the forwards.
