You're assuming that we don't add a post player to this class, or find a post player in next year's class who can start as a freshman. And that De Thaey and Vandy, as Junior and RS Senior respectively, won't be starter-quality post players.2/29/2012 9:48:05 PM |

I'm actually pretty pumped about seeing Vandy with a year of conditioning under his belt. He's an absolute force on defense and surprisingly athletic for a 7-footer. If he can get any sort of offensive go-to move (or simply pass out of the post without turning it over) he's going to help.
Also think De Thaey is going to just fine and a terror on the boards. Just needs to get some confidence out there. 2/29/2012 11:15:24 PM |

If TDT seems more than mop up time in the future, then we have failed somewhere. Guy is a practice player, only. 2/29/2012 11:17:18 PM |

Not so sure about that. He's got some athleticism and a lot of toughness ... and he's supposedly a decent shot. I'm not saying he should start, but he's going to be a contributor. We'll need some big bodies to crash the boards and play tough defense. He can certainly do that. 2/29/2012 11:21:44 PM |

Todd Fuller and Tom Gugliotta barely saw time in their freshman years and looked lost. Guess they turned out to be shit too.

Is this in comparison to the general population or something? Because he really isn't athletic at all for a basketball player and being 6'7 doesn't help matters3/1/2012 8:07:42 AM |

people are forgetting that freshman who actually contribute are way mor rare than we've been made accustom to over the past few years.
Gott wouldn't throw a scholy at some kid who is a good practice player. That's a waste of a perfectly good roster spot. He can still develop. 3/1/2012 8:12:21 AM |

Look saying he "could" develop is one thing. But acting like we aren't going to be a flawed team when Leslie, Howell, and Painter bounce is just crazy talk unless we land some serious studs in the 2013 class.
Zobo is a great rebounder, but I don't think he's going to start averaging 10 rebs/game or anything. 3/1/2012 9:43:58 AM |

saw this gem on PP's recruiting thread:
Quote : | "No question that guards are important because of the role they play in controlling the ball. But the big guys are also needed. Syracuse is not the same team without Melo. UNC is not the same team without Zeller and Henson. Kentucky is not the same without Jones and Davis, Ohio State is not the same without Sullinger, etc. Now a big man without skills is not very valuable to a team. Also, a guard without skills is not very valuable. What we need are skilled players, preferably at the guard and front line positions." |
If I might add, to win you have to score more points than the other team, but you also can't have the other team score more points than you3/1/2012 2:54:03 PM |

He's got a good point. If you remove All Americans from teams they aren't the same teams.
Also, having good players is better than just having players.
I didn't see him address whether having a good coach was more important than just having a coach though 3/1/2012 3:16:17 PM |

^^^ I can't tell what's sarcasm and what isn't. It's pretty reasonable for some players to want to win.
Some guys just care about playing time. Some guys also want to win. I have to respect a guy if he cares about winning more than he cares about himself.
Besides, Duke also has the most players in the NBA.
Seeing as how Duke has so many recruiting advantages over us, winning a lot was really the only way for us to close that gap. 3/2/2012 9:31:11 AM |

my point is that nothing within reason (IOW winning games we lost that we should have won) would have overcome any recruiting advantages Duke has over us. 3/2/2012 9:33:47 AM |

Julius Randle update:
Quote : | "As far as my recruitment things are still going pretty good.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski called me yesterday and wished me luck in the Final Four. I also talked to coach Orlando Early from N.C. State, I talked to TCU and Coach Roy Williams talked to my mom the other day too.
I’m thinking about coming down to visit N.C. State again in the spring. I’ve really been building a good relationship with Coach Early and the staff there and he wants me to get down there to meet my mom and show us both around.
N.C. State is kind of new to me, but I’ve definitely got some interest in them with my bro Rodney Purvis there and I had a good time when I visited there a few months back. " |

You don't think that if we were near the top of the conference (which we would be if we had won three of these four games that we were favored in or should have won because we kinda blew it: Duke/Gtech/UVa/Clemson) and were a shoe-in for the NCAA tourney, that we wouldn't have a better shot with a top recruit?? Really?
Especially a recruit that has mentioned he would like to see how the season pans out?

I feel like winning is more likely to affect any slight chance we have with Randle than it would have with Amile. If Randle is still showing interest come next season and our incoming class appears to be getting something special going here maybe that would help Randle consider us over some of the other schools. There is always that feeling that kids want to be a hero. If he gets the feeling that he could join our program with those guys and do something special here the guys have to know with our passionate fan base they would become legends. If you goto a school like Duke, Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. even if you win a national championship you are gonna be just another guy in a long list of awesome players who did the same thing. For an 18 year old kid sometimes that can be a selling point. 3/2/2012 10:12:09 AM |
ncwolfpack All American 3958 Posts user info edit post |
Bottom line, there are a million things that go into why a recruit chooses one school over another. Arguing over what the deciding factor is just ridiculous because there is no way you can know what the kid is thinking. Every kid puts more value on something different and there are also the things that aren't surface level like relationships with coaches and other players, proximity to family and whether or not that even matters to the kid, how he fits into a system and whether or not he is sold on his potential role. Some kids are infatuated and star struck by the big name schools and some aren't. If success of a program and winning were all that mattered then lower tier schools would never land big recruits over higher tier programs. 3/2/2012 10:28:30 AM |
