You can use optical audio out...it's what I do. Do you not have a cable? You have to set it under the system settings in the XMB.

i just figured it out i think

i have HDMI audio/video going into the TV, and then a COAX digi connection into my reciever. kinda nuts, although my receiver doesn't say 'digital' it says 'pcm'...which i havent seen before.

not sure what that's about.

But i'm up and setup. Add me up, 'kainen1'

Quinn, just please leave. Stein can go with you. If you can pull out any personal attacks in my post, please do. Otherwise, there are a ton of XBOX threads to go play around in. If I'm not mistaken, Bioshock came out this week so hopefully it will give you something better to do than try to bring everybody else down.

nothing22, be warned about downloading SOTN if you're looking to put it on PSP. It requires a huge amount of space. I want to say I only have a 25MB chip in mine right now and it asked for 250MB or some crazy amount. Still fun to play on the PS3 though and $10 is worth it.

I can't wait until Stein can afford to buy a PS3 so he can put his issues behind him. I think we're all ready for that to happen.

In other (PS3 related, what a concept!!?!) news, FIFA 08 is confirmed running at 60fps, and will feature 5 vs 5 online play. EA is showing the PS3 version at Leipzig this week, since it is the flagship SKU. They rebuilt the engine from the ground up, yadda yadda. Criterion/EA has also come out in the past saying that the next Burnout definitely runs better on the PS3, as it was designed with the PS3 in mind. I think you're going to start seeing more and more of that. No more x360 to ps3 ports, thank God.

There is a new dev kit released for PS3, reduces memory footprint (giving devs more mem to work with) pretty dramatically, it also adds a function for using a registered PSP as a display, streaming music, and saving screenshots on-the-fly.

Rumours are also starting to circulate that the DUAL SHOCK 3 is right around the corner, and might even get a release to coincide with GT Prologue (october/november). There is a mysterious shot of a PS controller on the official page.

And that concludes the summary of my morning Google Reader session.

^^^There is a difference between being able to afford something, and having any real use for it. I bought a PS3 because it fit my needs better and for less money than any other alternatives. If someone doesn't care about 50% of the functionality the PS3 offers (Blu-ray playback, 1080p over HDMI, DNLA, etc...), then they really have no reason to buy one, regardless of the cost. I personally had no interest in the PS3 before the 1.80 update. The added DVD upscaling and DNLA was the kicker for me, and made it the cheapest option that would do everything I wanted in an all-in-one A/V component.

I had tried to have a serious discussion in this thread a page ago, but apparently pointing out that Robopimp has no idea what he's talking about or discussing things that pertain to Blu-Ray means I'm trolling. I might as well just troll then, because god forbid anyone point out something that takes away from the glory of the PS3.

But really, what was I expecting when the combined IQ of the PS3 owners in this thread is lower than the page count?

Hey, explain this...

I dont have a bluray but i threw in a regular dvd to check it out on the ps3 (was hoping to get rid of my shitty zenith dvd player and use the ps3) and it looked actuallly pretty good. But i was curious on how to upscale to 1080i....or does it do it automatically?

Also, DNLA?

It automatically upscales now with the firmware updates. You can set it up though. I have been upscaling dvds to 1080p though and its been pretty nice. Can't beat 300 in bluray though...

The conference just ended and they had some pretty interesting stuff, including the tv tuner where you can record tv and all that stuff. You can use the PSP with it too and use it to watch tv through wifi and what not. Seems pretty interesting, but I don't have a psp.

GT5 Prologue looks ridiculous:

http://www.jeux-france.com/news21453_gc-video-gran-turismo-5-prologue.html

They didn't announce anything about a new rumble controller, which is what I was hoping for.

EA FIFA 08 runs 60 fps on PS3.

By the end of August, if we're still going back and forth on this, I hope they have the decency to lock this board. All people here want to do is discuss things PS3 & Blu-Ray related, not listening to pointless chatter. Notice the PS folk have had the manners to not bombard the Bioshock thread, you would be kind to return the favor.

Ok well you've got 10 days to figure out how a blu/hd players physical layer has any impact on its output picture quality assuming VC-1 is used on both disks and the transmission method to the display is HDMI.

You can ask for an extension if youre busy. School is starting. I realize you may need to budget your personal time in the direction of E115.

I can not afford a ps3 for the record.

Video is identical, however you could make the argument with audio. Many Blu-ray discs come with a higher bit rate uncompressed MPCM track, while their HD DVD counterparts do not (300 for example). Sure, the difference between that and the TrueHD track found on both version will be indistinguishable to most of us, but there it is. Some audiophile out there will swear that uncompressed MPCM is better.

I tried doing that -- I didn't setup the media server on my PC correctly, so only like 2 of my porn vids played. Not all media server programs were created equal... I installed the first one I saw, but apparently some of them will decode the video and send it over as MPEG for the PS3. YMMV, basically.

PS3 isnt that great at connecting to media servers / media center / PC's at all. I've tried and it really is hokey and keeps disconnecting and not playing or showing many files. 360 does a much better job here....then again, its not suprising, being the OS is MS and all. Durh.

HOWEVER - I really fucking love the dvd-ness of the PS3. Absolutely gorgeous, runs like a dime. Real happy with it. Audio/Video comes out of the HDMI and a very high fidelity and I can def. appreciate that. Just a side note.

Still need to try some games, but there's bioshock thats got me on stasis. Loaded a bunch up in gamefly queue tho.

Natively, it won't play much more than straight MPEG2 and a handful of H.264 files. Get Nero MediaHome running and it's transcoding server will allow you to stream basically anything that doesn't have a crazy high bit rate. It works especially well with DivX/XviD. Tversity and TwonkyVision do the job as well, but I've never tried them myself.

^Meh, results may vary I guess. I've had little to no problems streaming stuff at my house, but it pitched a fit when I had it hooked up at my friend's house. I would suggest troubleshooting your network before blaming the PS3. Do you have it hooked up wireless or wired?

likely. it may take more config. I guess my point was the 360 did this right away with the media center look and GUI...which is really nice. Not trying to knock ps3.

I'm totally down for figuring out how to do it on ps3 too....but would settle to have it display pictures, not sure why it doesn't understand jpegs. I can navigate into the files but it wont show anything. Same with SD cards, I can make it to the directory structure and i have to hit options and then show all and sometimes itll give me a listing of the files and then i can view them. Otherwise when i hit show photos it says there's nothing there. Very weird.

My network is wireless...linksys v5 G router.

I would be curious if you ever get it working in the event I fall face forward into buying a ps3.

thinkpad work? check
wii work? check
360 work? check
htpc work? check
ps3? somewhat

I dont really know how I could/should troubleshoot such a problem. I think the problem is with software(i know, typical hardware engineer response) . As far as I know this is sony's first attempt at media extension. Maybe the psp was, feel free to educate me.

I'm still trying to figure out why RoboPimp was called a moron. Not sure that he warranted it. Either way, I really think Quinn and Stein seriously should stop acting like highschool message board junkies and just have a fucking grownup discussion without mudslinging. Seriously just be a little mature. I think the rest of us are, and like I've said a million times none of us are shitting in anyone else's thread. We're just trying to have discussions over here.

So anyone like gradius? This shit look pretty awesome:

Coming in Winter '07 on PSN.

And for the record, Bioshock really is an awesome game. Thing is though is that there is a Bioshock thread and an Xbox 360 thread so I don't think its necessary to post all about it here because unfortunately, PS3 doesn't have it (now). And the best gaming experience of your life? Man, you must have missed the glory days. But it is an amazing game for real.
