^^he was on 610 here in Charlotte and made it sound a lot less "serious" than you say. just said he's thinking about it and it's a decision he and his family will have to make. they asked if Gott knew which way he was leaning and he said No.

Testing the waters now equals submitting paper work to be evaluated by a NBA committee made up of 20 NBA GMs. they send you a response and you have a few days to pull you name out (April 10th).

I think the College coach and staff is limited in helping and no agents can be involved until after declaring.

"Early entry" does not mean earlier vs later ... it (early) signifies "underclassmen" ... vs. Seniors.

I think that's what has some dipshits confused on here.

UNC's mass exodus has to help here. Both from the pick he would be taking at, and the ability to do big things in the ACC next year perspective.

"Gottfried 'excited' about Pack; awaiting Leslie's decision

Raleigh, N.C. — When North Carolina State head coach Mark Gottfried looks back at the season that was, he says he is not satisfied but the team “came a long way” and he is “excited”.

The Wolfpack reached the round of 16 and came very close to moving on beyond that, which was an overachievement by many prognostications and should fuel excitement within the NC State fan base as they move forward.

“Well, when you do what we did you’re excited,” Gottfried said while joining Mark and Mike on 620 The Buzz Thursday morning. “We’re not satisfied. We certainly could have kept playing, and we didn’t. In the big picture, our guys came a long way and they did a lot.”

NC State is building depth to a roster that featured just three seniors with one of the nation’s top recruiting classes that includes three McDonald’s All Americans. Juniors Scott Wood and Richard Howell as well as sophomore Lorenzo Brown had notable years and junior DeShawn Painter saw a lot of quality minutes. The big question is whether Calvin Leslie will depart for the NBA.

“We’ve talked, and my message to him is he needs to do whatever is best for him and what he wants to do,” Gottfried said. “Everyone is different. Some guys have a desire to be a higher pick; some guys are ok with being lower picks.

“He had a great year, but he can get a lot better. Whatever he decides to do, we’re going to support him 100 percent. It’s a tough call for him; he’s torn a little bit. He just has to sit down with his family and work it out.”

Regardless of Leslie’s decision, Gottfried said that he wants his team to separate from the gym for a few weeks before starting the summer program of strength and conditioning. As for the coaches, Gottfried said he is always working on recruiting.

“It never all the way slow down,” he said. “You’re always working toward next year.”

JERRY: Let me ask you this: which word did he emphasize? Did he say, "Why would Jerry bring anything?" or, "Why would Jerry bring anything?" Did he emphasize "Jerry" or "bring"?

ELAINE: I think he emphasized "would."

PLZ to stay, UNC wil have a depleted front court, Mike Scott will be gone, and that 28 year old Air Force commando at FSU will finally be gone. You can dominate.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying weight and face-up game and weight and Leslie's NBA success are uncorrelated. Shooting ability and his NBA success are highly correlated.

Evaluating players on (too little) weight is what dumbasses do.

Except for the part where you think his weight has something to do with his face up game.

Maybe you'll get it the third time around.

the article has some good quotes from leslie's mom in it...here's the meat of it:

Quote :
""Right now we're getting all the pieces to the puzzle," said Mrs. Leslie. "We're trying to weigh all the options. What will be the best thing for him to do? We just want to make the right decision.

"He has not declared for the draft and we're not even sure if he will declare. Personally, I think declaring is a great option because it will enable you to gather the most information, but we haven't decided to do that because we know you can only declare and withdraw once. If C.J. does declare, we will gather all the feedback and whatever is the best decision for him we will do that and go on from there."

Mrs. Leslie said the family has been in constant discussions with NC State head coach Mark Gottfried.

"We are going to heavily lean on coach Gottfried," she said. "We know he is sincere, and we know he is looking out for C.J.'s best interest.

"When we talked with coach Gottfried the other day, we let him know that we appreciate all his input, and he said he will support C.J. 100%. We know that if he came back to State it would be a win-win situation as well, so now it just comes down to making the best decision."

"Obviously, we would love to hear that he would be a lottery pick," she said. "That would make this decision much easier. I know he wants to be a first-round pick 100%... you have to be a first-rounder, but we don't know for sure yet what that cut-off for making the decision will be. Personally, as far as slot-wise, for me I would say top 20 or above, but that is just for me.

"Again, we aren't there yet and still do not even know if C.J. is going to declare this year, we're hoping to finalize that by April 2nd, I believe that is the date we need to let them know by."

Players who are interested in entering the NBA draft have until April 3rd to submit an application for feedback from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee. The committee then must submit their data back to the student-athlete by April 6th. That information will include reports from NBA GMs and scouting departments on the student-athlete's potential draft possibilities.

According to the NCAA, students must withdraw from the draft by April 10th, but the NBA's early entry deadline isn't until April 29th. It is confusing, but Draft Express did a great job of breaking down the process.

"We know we would have to make a final decision before April 10th, but we're hoping to know before then if we can," said Mrs. Leslie. "Like I said, it's a win-win situation because of the current situation at State with what coach Gottfried is building and what we have coming back."

Mrs. Leslie acknowledges that coach Gottfried has played a vital role in C.J.'s development on and off the court, and they are going to consider the potential upside of returning to NC State for another season.

"C.J. has started becoming a leader and he is really working hard. He was really putting his best foot forward and it is showing on the court. I think it would just pick up from there as he continues to grow and mature.

"There is a comfort level with coach Gottfried. One of the things he did when he took over was spend time with each of the young guys and get to know them personally... it clicked and that's why it is a perfect fit.

"I think coach Gottfried has a great class coming in, and I think the Pack is back. It's a win-win situation with who is there and the other guys coming in.""

^^they are seriously thinking about it, using Gottfried to help with the process

Sounds like he is leaning towards going if his draft stock is high enough in my opinion. Mother said she wants top 20 at a minimum, but that wasn't what she had discussed with CJ, just her personal opinion. Also said he would love to be a lottery pick.

If he grades out top 20 or above, sounds like he is leaving in my opinion. If he is late first round, possible second round I think he stays. So its time for you NBA draft gurus to do some research and make a spreadsheet with the top 10 mock drafts and CJ's status.

I remember Leslie saying when he came to NCSU that he wanted to help State dethrone our next door neighbors, and with the chaos at UNC entering next season, and Duke loosing their everything PG-Leslie and his supporting cast would definitely be in the upper echelon of the ACC next season.

if the big $$$ contract is no factor to him, then I feel strongly he will stay. He gets along with Gottfried, his development has been through the roof, and I really think he has a good bond with Zo, Howell, and Wood...we'll see in a few days.

COME BACK FOR ONE MORE SEASON CALVIN..the sky is the limit for the Pack for the 2012-13 season!!!

That sounds good to me.

Chad Ford doesn't even have Leslie in the 1st round anymore. He's one of the "next 5 in" and ranked 33rd overall. Of course, players like Cody Zeller or JMM not declaring would push him up, but he's looking like a reach for the top 20.

the "stopped going to class" thing comes out every time there's anyone anywhere thinking of going pro. i remember when unc's whole team had stopped going to class... and then they came back and won a national title.

also, if i had a week to make such a huge decision, i would probably not surround myself w/ 20k kids that have a noted biased either.

I haven't seen anyone put him in the top 20 yet and I doubt its going to happen...especially now that they can't do any pre-draft camps and don't have a lot (if any) time to do team workouts.

And now with all of UNC's player entering, it will only push him down even further. If they hold on to that "top 20" criteria...then he's coming back. Personally, they should wait til he's a lottery pick. Which will likely be the case if he keeps improving and works on that jump shot over the offseason.

^first of all, how did you infer he's leaving (oh, i see, he hasn't renewed his apartment)? and second, why would we be fucked just because he leaves? you say some silly things here on tww.

i'd think he'd probably be a lottery-pick next year if just came-back and played the entire season like he played the last 10 or so games. and a slightly improved jump-shot would certainly help.

Well I don't really think we're fucked. I was trying to be funny.

Logic dictates exactly what you said but NC State basketball players don't exactly make the logical decisions when it comes to entering the draft. Examples would be Cedric Simmons and Josh Powell.

i'd certainly feel better if he did renew it (if that story is even true), but like someone said, if there's even a slight chance that he's leaving, then it'd be better to wait before renewing. and from the story and from gottfried, we know that he's weighing his options, so it'd make sense that he'd wait (if that story is even true).
