Still think it's too early to write them off, not every young kid makes an impact on their rookie deal. The only prospect i'm concerned about right now is Boychuk. Dalpe is going to play on the Canes, and the rest really don't have a high enough pedigree to be concerned if they don't pan out.

And our D prospects are looking pretty solid. Time will tell.

Our biggest problem isn't developing players, it was maurice and our lack of offensive talent. Most of our forwards are 3rd/4th line quality. The only ones who arent are Skinner, Staal, Sutter, Ruutu, and Jokinen I guess.

Welsh was solid, I was impressed for a player who just played college a couple nights before. I think we have a lot of solid prospects coming up, especially in defense. With Dumoulin and Murphy, along with Sanguinetti maybe, I wouldn't feel too bad about losing Bryan Allen this offseason. I want to keep him, but not for too much money, especially with these prospects.

Our forwards are solid, Bowman was decent in his time up, same with Samson. Dalpe should be the best of the bunch, but only time will tell. I'm curious to see what will happen to Dadonov, he looked really good in the games I watched him, but I don't know if he'll stay. Victor Rask balled out in juniors this year, he could make the team next year.

Out of the draft, I'm hoping we get the best forward left, hopefully Forsberg, Galchenyuk, Faksa, or Gaunce, in that order. We'll see though.

Crosby had more points in 22 games than LaRose and Tlusty. Seeing that put things back in to perspective for me. If the Canes don't make a move on a top tier forward in the off season, we can probably expect to be outside looking in.

They need to stop a complete freefall first...I haven't been following them much while I'm overseas, but they've sucked it up big time the last week or two.

Would be cool for them to bring it to Raleigh and have a huge Canes crowd there, though.

Thank you for affirming the point I was trying to make Dammit100. The Canes need a top tier forward in order to make the playoffs. James Neal and muh fuckin' Geno are top tier right? LaRose and Tlusty are not top tier, right?

If you're going to compare Crosby to LaRose and Tlusty, then the point you're making is that the Canes need three top tier forwards, not one.

Also, would be super stoked for a Calder Cup game at PNC.

It's possible that we are all on the same page, but some want to refute what's being said for the sake of doing it.

I think we would all agree that the Canes need to beef up the forward corps. 1 or 3, doesn't matter. It would all help, and that's what I was saying.

Rutherford also said today that the team has financial resources to sign a big time free agent this off season.

I agree that we're all on the same page, but I don't think it's reasonable to think that a player of Crosby or Malkin's caliber would ever come here through free agency. Can we land a top line talent through the market, I don't see why not. Can we land an elite, MVP caliber player, I don't think so. And in my mind, Parise is the former.

so glad to hear that JR is planning on spending that cheddar.

of course FAs know we are desperate and are going to have JR over a barrel. Whoever we do sign as our top line FA, that contract is going to be ridiculous.

[Edited on April 9, 2012 at 3:42 PM. Reason : also super pumped that dumoulin is going to sign and isn't going back to BC. fuck yes.]

I think the only leverage we have with Parise is that he and Staal, allegedly, are close friends.

What you're saying about a superstar is also a concern of mine. I had my reservations about getting the top pick because I could see someone like Nail or Grigorenko pulling a Jack Johnson on us. I wouldn't be surprised if we got someone like Radek Faksa, but I don't know if he is ready to play in the bigs right now.

What about Rick Nash? I know his name came up a while back, and now he's going to be available, seems like he's an obvious choice to bring in this summer

I would think his existing contract would be too much to bring in, and that JR would rather negotiate his own deal. If he strikes out on all the other "first line talent" (read: Parise and not much else), he may go that route.

Nash's contract is what, something like 7.5 mil per?

You know if we get Parise or someone else who is legitimately a top line talent to pair with Staal, we are going to be paying at least 7 mil per. We want an elite forward bad, and said elite forward will know that. I think JR is going to be successful in his search, but if we get someone like Parise or of a similar caliber, he'll get close to Staal money. Which in turn is going to seriously impact the contract extension we hopefully give Skinner this summer instead of waiting for his RFA year.

Quote :

You really have trouble with analogies, Brownie. There is no way in hell Nail or Grigorenko would not sign. And to compare them to JJ? Not even close to a similar situation.

Sure, Yakupov would love to stay unsigned and play in juniors next year so he can spend another year waiting to be the #1 pick and not get one year of his ELC burned.

How could I have made the "comparison" more clear? Jack Johnson didn't want to play in Carolina. My concern was that the top picks wouldn't want to play in Carolina either.

I didn't mention anything about specifics. I'll try to be more effective in the future, though.

And how often have you heard of such a situation in the NHL? Especially for a #1 pick who has no other options besides going back to juniors?

Jack Johnson's case is FAR from typical. Until we have to worry about any prospect's dad dancing in the stands or writing letters to the editor on behalf of his son, or better yet: sitting in the parking lot while the prospect meets with the GM, let's let it go.

in case you need some backstory: http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/rbh/comments/jack_johnson_sr_goes_to_bat_for_his_baby_boy/

I admit it's not very often, so I would agree that it would be out of the norm. I suppose part of my concern was that it will ultimately be difficult to keep all of our good talent long term, and an overall #1 might make it even more difficult.

i understand that concern, but that's more of an issue for 3 years from now when ELCs are up and not a "this guy's a flight risk" concern.

Uh, such problems affect every franchise.

Only Ray Shero can orchestrate a scenario where he keeps EVERYONE. For reference, please check out the Edmonton Oilers over the next 3 years and see how they handle keeping people. At least we have the cap room and seem to be trending towards having some capital to spend.

yeah, I don't envy Edmonton's situation with all the pending ELCs expiring over the next few years.

i have been enjoying teasing my buddy, who is a sabres fan , about them matching Edmonton's offer sheet to Vanek some years ago

If they hadn't, the compensatory draft picks would have been ridiculous.

Of course the Sabres had already lost Drury and Briere at the time, so it did seem like they had to do whatever they could to keep Vanek. He's overpaid, but I wouldn't mind having him ON THE CAINS!!!!

That comes shortly after the news/rumor that he was unhappy with his 3rd line role in Pittsburgh, so maybe a formal trade request is coming soon?

Eric must have really talked up how great Carolina at their last family outing.

SQUEEEE!!

and as he only has one year left on his deal, we are in the driver's seat as far as trade talks go.

What would people realistically be ok giving up?

I would be VERY upset giving up Sutter, but I would imagine Shero would push hard for someone to replace Jordan's role on the team.

Either Sutter + mediumish pick/prospect, or maybe Dalpe + Faulk/McBain + high pick/prospect (1st rounder this year?)

And before people say that's not enough for Staal -- if he wants out and wants to get paid, Shero won't get as much as he could have last year.

Swap Sutter, lose a third center, gain a second center for Skinner -- sign Jordan to a nice deal, then go hunting for a top 6 wing? Hopefully Nash or Rask could fill the third line center role this upcoming year (or move Brent up?)

LAROSE FOR STAAL STRAIGHT UP PLZ

would not wanna give up sutter or faulk. mcbain and/or dalpe would be fine. would be nice if they'd take pitkanen off our hands since we've got some depth on defense for once and their salaries would pretty much offset, but i doubt they'll go for that.

Luke has discussed this some over the past few days....but I'd rather have Parise to fulfill the ever persistent top-winger void. But I'd be stoked to have Jordan (has he ever played wing?).

Either way..if we have either J. Staal or Parise on our roster come October I'll be all like

pitkanen is an intriguing option -- especially if they think Depres is still a year or so away from more PP duty. I don' t know that they really need him with Letang around though....if we were to give them Pitkanen, we'd probably have to take one of those D-men they got for 4-5 mil per in the offeseason a while back. (Paul Martin? I don't think the Pens are too happy with that signing)

perhaps we could go pitkanen + medium prospect for Staal + Martin -- doesn't help out our cap much, and we're on the hook for 5 mil per for the next 3 years with Martin, but thems the breaks.

^ Don't think we'd move Jordan to wing. If we could keep Sutter, Staal/Staal/Sutter is really nice center depth, especially in our division. We'd still have to do something to get a winger in FA -- though I think adding Jordan makes a top line player more likely to want to come here.

"RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Jamie McBain on a two-year contract. The deal will pay McBain $1.7 million in 2012-13, and $1.9 million in 2013-14.

“Jamie is still a very young player who has established himself as an NHL defenseman,” said Rutherford. “He moves the puck well and has shown that he can contribute offensively, especially on the power play.”

McBain, 24, completed his third full professional season in 2011-12, leading all Hurricanes defensemen with 19 assists and 27 points. The Edina, MN, native led team blueliners with five power-play goals and was second among Carolina defensemen with 11 power-play points. McBain (6’2”, 200 lbs.) has scored 18 goals and earned 49 assists (67 points) in 166 career NHL regular-season games with the Hurricanes since turning professional following three seasons at the University of Wisconsin. Carolina drafted McBain in the second round, 63rd overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft."
