Not an officer but since my agency own's the sheriff's cars.

AWD Chargers are the newest round of purchases we have made.
with have Pursuit edition Taurus's (think taurus SHO with police lights, interior and steel wheels) which seem to be the most forgiving to drive like a race car. The caprice is a good all around car that i feel handles better than the charger and is more fun then the taurus to drive. The PPV Tahoes are a favorite and feel "unrollable" for an SUV and have way more interior space than the rest.

I can't speak to reliability much as we sell our cars at 100,000 miles before any major issues happen.

In the year and a half that I've been in my current assignment I've been assigned more cars than a drug dealer: focus, impala, explorer x2, charger, and as of last week, a Chrysler 200. It's a pos but I'm glad to be back in a car that doesn't scream 'police'.

The top ones for me:
1) Third party oversight. This is the case for some jurisdictions, but I don't see this as a national policy, which I believe it should be. Judges and DAs that interact with these police on a daily basis and have a good professional relationship shouldn't be the same ones to decide inoccence or guilt.

2) Demilitarize police forces. Stop recruiting amongst recent war veterans, stop the federal government programs that hand over military equipment to police forces. Nothing says "we're a part of this community too" like rolling down the streets with heavy weaponry and tanks.

3) Stop fear mongering, especially amongst police. Cops are as much victims in these situations as the people they are victimizing. I understand cops have a dangerous job, but putting them in the mindset that every interaction they have might lead to their death seems really irresponsible.

4) Stop criminalizing everything. So many of these deadly interactions have been from the escalation of relatively petty and unwarranted shit. The cops are doing their jobs, but lawmakers shouldn't make it the job of the police to handle everything from dangerous criminals to kids playing in the park.

5) There should be a nationwide focus on creating more community interaction between police and the people they serve. Some jurisdictions do this and with great results, others tend to see a line between themselves and the public that isn't to be crossed. A lot of people have a complete mistrust of cops, and thats because every interaction they've ever had has been for petty bullshit where the cop is trying to intimidate (as is their job) or in the media, where they went to far.

6) Stop with the blue frat shit. I get that 95% of the cops out there are great men and women, and doing their jobs as best they can, but turning blind eyes to misconduct is whats leading to the hatred amongst so many communities. A lot of people point to these shootings as the cause of movements like BlackLivesMatter, but its not. Its the daily harassment and abuse a lot of these communities face from the 5% of shitty cops out there.
I get that there are "bad performers" in all fields, but that shouldn't be an acceptable standard in every one of them. Shitty waiters, bad mechanics, incompetent delivery drivers are an unfortunate part of life, but when you're in a critical field there shouldn't be an acceptable level of shitty behavior. You wouldn't tolerate being operated on by a bad doctor, so why should we give a badge to a shitty cop?
Bad cops need to go and shouldn't be allowed to stay in the field under any circumstances. Cut out the bottom performers and let them deal with their own shitty attitude, because if you don't the rest of the LEOs are going to have to pay for it.

How secretive is your department's policy book? This would be whatever document is referred to whenever a policeman says "this is or is against department policy "

The reason I ask is that several of my attorney friends claim that this policy book is something that the public can't really request a copy of. They claim some of the policies are not legal, and the police know it, thus the secrecy.

It's not. A simple records request will get you it. The only real things that get denied are Records of Investigation (non public), Records of Intelligence, Personnel Records and Sensative Public Safety Informstion (, gate codes, what doors are secured).

As still a relatively new officer on the force (<10 years) do you see a change in the effect that these national stories of police shootings are having on the department? Is there any vocal unease about it or is everyone tight lipped and eyes forward so as not to piss off the chain of command?

Do you see more liberal minded officers joining the force or is it still majority who want to play Wyatt Earp?

In the last year, I've see about 6 or 7 people leave the Department for regular jobs. That doesn't sound like a lot, but aren't a huge department (~250 sworn). Everyone talks about it. Some get it, some don't. The upper echelon isn't immune and is changing with the time. They have tried some stuff (policy, a required seminar for officers). Again, some works, some doesn't. For me, it's just business as usual.

Liberal or conservative, there ain't to many people signing up right now.
