While Amile Jefferson (Philadelphia/Friends Central) is playing his recruitment close to the vest, Duke, Kentucky, NC State, Ohio State and Villanova are the likely favorites. Here's a look at what all five programs have to offer him.
Amile Jefferson Height: 6-7 | Weight: 190 | ESPNU 100: 18 | PF rank: 4 School Playing style How he fits Pro factor X factor
Duke Mike Krzyzewski continues to run the motion offense that he learned under Bobby Knight, but in the years since Coach K began working with Mike D'Antoni on the national team, Duke's offense has evolved to include a lot of the same ball screen action used by D'Antoni. With Austin Rivers and Miles Plumlee leaving, Duke will be looking for some additional scorers, but it's really the following year when Seth Curry, Ryan Kelly, Mason Plumlee and Andre Dawkins all graduate that Jefferson could potentially step into a top scoring role. It used to be that Duke was criticized for its inability to develop pros, but that certainly isn't the case anymore. In fact, with Coach K's status atop the U.S. Olympic team, the Blue Devils' pro appeal has probably never been greater than it is right now. Duke was late to the party and skipped to the front of the line. The delay in Jefferson's decision has been all about him getting to know the Blue Devils' staff. Ultimately, the mystique of the Duke brand is the big factor. From Coach K to the strong academics.
Kentucky Kentucky is typically longer and more athletic than its opponent at every position on the floor. The Wildcats play smothering defense, which leads to their high-powered transition offense. Their half-court offense has evolved in recent years, transitioning away from the dribble drive in favor of more prototypical quick-hitters. John Calipari doesn't rebuild, he reloads and with Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Darius Miller, Terrence Jones and very possibly others leaving for the draft there will be significant opportunities for a handful of freshmen to once again step up next year. The incoming class is already strong, but has a noticeable gap at one of the forward spots. There isn't a team in America that can match Kentucky's recent results when it comes to the NBA. The Wildcats not only produce pros in high volume, they produce them in rapid fire, as most of the team's top recruits haven't seen their junior seasons in recent years. Kentucky's situation is the most unpredictable as the future of the entire team hangs in the balance of their NBA decisions. That affects not just the players but also potentially the coaches, as Calipari could very possibly be a candidate for the Knicks job should he so desire this offseason.
NC State NC State's offensive attack revolves around its talent. The Wolfpack are good in transition and when they get into a half-court game they're looking to play off of their most talented guys with a combination of post-ups for their bigs, isolations for their wings and screens for their shooters. In terms of personnel and style of play, there probably isn't a better fit. NC State is more likely to tweak its playbook to get Jefferson the mid-post touches that he relishes, while he and incoming freshman and fellow McDonald's All-American T.J. Warren have perfectly complementing games. While Mark Gottfried coached guys like Mo Williams and Gerald Wallace at Alabama, NC State really can't compare with Duke or Kentucky in terms of the sheer volume of pros. However, its best sales pitch may center around the opportunity for Jefferson to be more of a showcased scorer early in his career. NC State has been on Jefferson longer and harder than anyone, with the possible exception of Villanova, and if Duke hadn't jumped in at the 11th hour, the Wolfpack might have already secured a commitment from the scoring forward. That persistence and patience is bound to resonate with Jefferson.
Ohio State Thad Matta's teams typically balance being athletic and physically aggressive. The Buckeyes play up-tempo when they can but in the half court they're one of the few teams that still plays inside-out using multiple ball screens into high-low action. Ohio State's style of play would be well-suited for Jefferson. With the Buckeyes' 4- and 5-men getting post and perimeter touches, Jefferson could utilize his mismatch potential to take advantage of his defensive matchup and even provide the flexibility to go with a big lineup as a 3-man. Ohio State has consistently sent players to the league under Matta, but the most relevant pro factor may be the recent development of sophomore forward Deshaun Thomas, who exploded onto the NBA radar this year after a breakout sophomore season. Thomas' decision to declare for the draft or return to Ohio State is likely to have lasting implications in Jefferson's recruitment. If he leaves, there will be a big void along the front line that Jefferson could potentially fill from day one, which has to be an intriguing opportunity.
Villanova Jay Wright's four-out, one-in motion allows him the flexibility to play four guards together or go with a more traditional high-low look with his 4-man diagonal his 5-man on the perimeter. More important than the system itself, is the emphasis Wright puts on skill development on a daily basis. Whether he is at the 3 or the 4, Jefferson would play around the perimeter at Villanova. From a skill development standpoint, he would benefit tremendously from the daily repetitions that Villanova gets as he looks to expand his tools around the arc. Wright has had his fair share of pros at Villanova, but he's also had his fair share of players who have had excellent college careers only to not make it in the league. For Jefferson, the key will be the development of his perimeter skills and shooting range, and that's something Wright is as qualified as anyone to handle. Villanova is the hometown option and to hear Jefferson tell it that can be both a good thing and a bad thing. He likes the idea of playing in front of family and friends, but has also spoken of the value of being independent and having to persevere through any adversity. 4/4/2012 1:16:51 PM |

there are 2 thought lines.
1 he should go to duke because it is duke and is ALWAYS on the national stage in Basketball. and seriously to learn from coach k should be considered an honor (although he'll probably turn you into a single-roll player that has no binness in the nba)
2 he should go here, with the recruiting class we already have and our turn-around coach we should be on top of the world if not next year then within the next 3 years. 4/4/2012 3:16:23 PM |

I wonder if he would consider the fact that he could be on one of Duke's more weak teams in recent memory. I know that many of you have pointed out that Duke will be some what rebuilding next year, but it would seem to hurt him if he goes there and they aren't playing up to Duke standards.
Whereas if he comes here, and the team accomplishes as much as it should next year, his contributions will be looked upon more favorably not only from the fan base but also the national media. 4/4/2012 3:27:27 PM |
