This is probably a silly question, but do they support ATI Mobility GPUs?

i have an x1700 in my laptop, it's just a refreshed x1600 but it complicates things because ati is lousy about supporting it, and of course x1600 drivers aren't effective on it...

It seems to require a bit of a hack to "fool" the client into thinking it's a x1600, but it can be made to work apparently.

is there anyway you can force your computer to go idle sooner? like say i was doing something and when i finish i KNOW i wont be on my computer for the next 5 hours...and since i know this i want it to immediately think its idle soon as i leave...anyway to do that?

It does anyway. Idle doesn't refer to whether you are actually doing anything, it's just when the CPU usage falls below a certain threshold, generally because there is no activity.

In other words, it's not something you set. If you want to lower your idling CPU use, you need to eliminate unnecessary processes that run in the background and chew up CPU cycles.

^^^My understanding is that he does not have controll of those PC's anymore, so it is just a matter of time before the program is removed or the PC's are replaced. Also, sometimes they are shutdown for a week or so at a time. He has had fluctuations like this before.

^^Good work, keep charging to the top.

^The best thing to do is open your task manager and see what programs are using your CPU time. Leave it open during the day and see what is using your cycles. My guess it that over the long run you will see no difference in increasing your priority and will have more system problems. As I type this, Folding is using 92-98% of the CPU time, while explorer etc. are using the rest.

discreetly send a spam unsolicited bulk email to NCSU mailing lists.

just write a couple short lines about FAH + NCSU, Team #59, and the relevant links. don't mention TWW at all.

and when you do send the bulk email, send it FROM: an NCSU email address, send it back TO: the same address, and put all of the recipients in the BCC: field. this is important. otherwise you're gonna have hundreds of pissed off people.

I am joining back in after a new computer build. I have a dual core AMD, do I need to do anything special during the installation of the SMP client to use both cores?

question:

what happens if you "covertly" put FAH on computers not controlled by you, then halfway through the WU, whoever has the computer finds FAH, and uninstalls it. leaving the WU half finished.

wouldnt this kind of fuck the FAH effort up? they'd think the WU is being worked on, but actually its not.

^There's a deadline i believe for most WU's. And once that deadline is up the project goes to someone else.

^^No the smp client should utilize both cores once you install it. You will just want to set the idle/load settings.

I tried the SMP client and it didn't seem to recongize the second core and also didn't seem to work. I read that dual core to be run on the normal client and the SMP is for quad core. Any truth to this?

SMP should run on dual core. Most people here who use smp use C2Ds and run it fine i believe. My fah is currently down for a couple days while i reassemble my pc. My poor desktop is currently opened up on my desk with parts all over the place.

so I'm using the FAH GUI Client on my 2.66 GHz P4 with XP Pro. I have read folks getting 30-40 secs/frame. Do I just have something really complex here because I'm running in the 35-40 minutes/frame range. CPU is at 100%. I've got 250 frames and I'm only done with 80. Been running for two days.

Just trying to get an idea of what's going on.

For anyone having too much trouble getting the SMP client working, here's another option to get a decent amount of points (though not quite as much as the SMP)

Setup two Console Clients as detailed here:
http://fahwiki.net/index.php/FAH_&_SMP (scroll to the middle of this page for instructions)
Using the -local flag and setting the MachineID of one of the clients to 2 is what gets this working. You have to edit the advanced options on installation to get to the MachineID setting.

And to use flags when starting Folding as a service (preferred), all it takes is a quick trip to the registry
http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_add_flags_when_running_the_console_in_service_mode%3F

^^ I would uninstall the GUI and run the console client if the GUI isn't working right. Add it as a service if you can,

We need to keep adding PCs and PS3s to get us back in this thing. (Macs and Linux boxes welcome too )

are you running anything else in the background...downloading torrents or anything like that.

open up the task manager, processes, and sort by CPU Utilization. Is anything using >5% of your cycles besides folding?

Like I said, you might want to try to console client. Its supposed to perform better than the GUI

If you really want to see how well you're doing for your specific processor, install Fahmon to see how many Points Per Day you're producing, and check your averages against other users.

i've got a beast of a machine at work and I would love to use it for folding while I am there. but, I'm behind a proxy. any way that I can figure out what the proxy address is so that I can enter it into the proxy info for F@H?

also, it is a dual core machine. should I use the SMP or just use 2 separate folders of the regular? I don't want to "install" anything if I don't have to, and I noticed that the SMP has to be "installed." a simple unzipping of files to a directory doesn't bother me, but a full-fledged, registry-modifying install makes we squeamish. I would love to be able to just bring in a flash drive and run it from that, but I am literally not allowed to bring in a flash drive or anything like that.

ideally, I'd like to just run the console version when I feel like it. installing it as a service simply isn't an option to me, even though I can physically do that with no problems. the SMP version doesn't seem to give me that option, though.

I run the SMP as a non-service. I made a shortcut to fah.exe, put my command line options in that shortcut, then placed the shortcut in my startup directory. When my computer comes on, the SMP client starts. I use an application called TrayIT to keep the DOPS window in the System Tray. Be careful tho, SMP WUs have short deadlines, and you'll want any dual-core machine (esp the older/slower ones) to folding SMP WUs 24X7 to get them in on time.

Yeah, maybe you'll want to do 2 console clients...less points but everything helps

Just added two more machines to my growing array. Today we added a T60P with 2gb ram radeon V5200 and 2.13ghz core duo and an optiplex 745 pentium D 3.4ghz with 2gb of ram. Tommrow I'll add a G4 450mhz 1gb ram and an athlon xp 2400 640 Mb ram. Hope I help.
