Yeah, I'll probably max out the roth this month and hope to do it before a large upswing occurs.

how prevalent is the trend of an upswing at the end of month (for what I assume is profit taking)?

I must be doing something right because my losses on days like today aren't nearly as bad as I would expect them to be. At least less than the scale of my gains on good days.

God damn it. I was thinking about selling some stuff for capital yesterday and decided against it. Then today turns out to be the worst day of the year. God, I'm stupid.

i'm trying to game this volatility. i lost some money trying to catch a bottom in CBG.

...as for VMW: sometimes afterhours, stocks temporarily swing wildly on low volume for no real reason. i put in some low ball trades for VMW incase it swings real low.

- chase it
- wait until it pulls back into the high 70s/below 80
- buy long dated calls
- other

I think i'm done with it for the time being.

VMW's like a girl I hooked up with and tossed aside who could have been much more, had I given her a real chance. And now, of course I've missed my chance.

if BIDU runs up to 250 without me being a part of it, i'll be somber.

i think its got to come down a little before it goes there. had 4 up days in some of these tech names.

put in some limit sells on RIMM and CHL -- hope to sell high today get again at slightly lower price.

There is definately going to be another dip in the market very soon. A lot of stocks are up 20-30% since Aug 16. That is just too quick too soon.

that's the thing. none of us has a crystal ball.

i thought this correction would happen in May, so when it didn't i thought we would be due in October. that's why when someone int this thread mentioned a 10% correction in late July, i scoffed at it. low and behold...

its hard to tell what's going to happen. there's a lot of forces at work.

the bull case
- global growth -- at some point there will be divergence between Chinese and Indian markets, and the US.
- deals continuing -- its like the euphoric first night of spring break patrying just ended. there are several more nights of partying, but the expected IRR from deals will be understandably lower.
- real efficiencies and productivity gains from the use of technology and new business processes
- new wealth creation/the wealth effect
- the seemingly indestructible consumer confidence

the bear case
- the backlash of overbought residential real estate market in the US
- the Yen carry trade -- much more impactful than most people realize
- LIBOR rates rising
- Inflation & burdensome energy prices
- the fear that "artificial" liquidity has inflated all asset classes, and it all must come down

i don't know what's going to happen; i can't time all this shit. that's why i have my day job.

Anyone know the "Annual Exclusion for Gifts" for 2008?
It's $12,000 for 2007, just curious if anyone has a definitive answer for 2008.

bought Toyota (TM) today at $112.50

not a particularly flashy investment, but a solid company from what i can gather, trading at a P/E in the 12s. relatively close to a 52 week low, and even pays a small dividend.

i figure that, worst case, i'm not likely to lose much/any money in it from here...and if it doesn't perform, i'm not really effectively losing anything in terms of opportunity cost, because i'm sitting on a bit of cash in my brokerage account right now--just because i haven't seen much i wanted to buy lately (and every time i do spot something i want, it seems i just barely miss the opportunity to jump on it).

^ I've been looking at TM as well, noticed that they've dropped off quite a bit from earlier this year.

I think they have a lot of room to grow, and will only continue to gain market share.

I just saw a commercial from Toyota of Durham advertising a lifetime warranty. Certainly there's probably a lot of fine print, but had i been in the market for a new vehicle, I'd be there right now to at least find out the details, and possibly buy a car.

I don't know if that's something that only they're doing, or if it's a nationwide effort, but if it's the latter-- they'll be moving some vehicles.

Are ETF's more of a long term investment? A couple months ago I purchased a few shares of VB... a vanguard small-cap ETF.

I was wondering what is the best long term investment for something that will not be touched for the next 10+ years?
